How much can you consume after surgery?

Recommended Posts

What I mean is, for a Protein Drink, for example. How much can you drink at one time? Do you just sip on it for a while? I bought a shaker bottle that holds 16 ounces for making a Protein Drink and I'm thinking you aren't going to be able to just drink that down, sipping til it's gone??

Thanks!

It depends on when after surgery you're talking about. While you're still healing you should only sip for a while. As you heal, you'll find that you can drink normally, and when you get on to solid food you may be able to eat almost normally too. It isn't until you have a fill (or more) and get restriction that you'll find any difficulty in drinking, and even then it's not much difficulty. You probably won't be able to chug when you have good restriction, but most liquids go down pretty smoothly.

I am banded 8 days post op. At first I was scared to death to drink. :) Now I find that I can sip consistantly. My Protein is now concentrated in 4 oz milk instead of 8 oz. A little ycky, but not too bad. :squareeye Clear Liquids are no problem, but cream Soups (my meals) I go 4 0z over 30 min. I am struggling to get in all my liquids though, so today, I will sip ALL DAY!

If I remember correctly, I put my Protein drink in a bottle marked with oz's and a lid on it. I remember being able to drink either 2 or 4 oz at a time right a first. It really doesn't matter, though; listen to your own body, and learn how to "read" it. We're all a little different.

For me I can drink a can of Protein drink but it takes me about 1 hr. Then with my Soups etc about the same time, I seem to loose interest before I can get it down. My surgery was the 8th of Dec 2005 and I am eating more now but again I loose interest because it takes me so long to eat and if its hot food, its cold and not so good. I haven't had my first fill and at this point I'm not sure I want to yet, I am scheduled to have a fill on the 16th, I am loosing weight steady so I think I might put it off. Down 23lbs

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
