If anyone ever says to me, I took the "easy way, I'll just...

Recommended Posts

If anyone ever says I took the easy way out to losing weight I'll kick their butt! Banded on the 11th, ill for 5 days before being hospitalized for three more. Finally stopped dry heaving and feeling faint. Tried eating a tablespoon of mashed potatoes- stomach grumbling was INTENSE. Panicked cause I thought it got stuck. If didn't, my esophagus is just sore from all the dry heaving and the EGD ( scope) I had done on Tuesday. This sure wasn't anything like I thought it would be. But on a better note, I am feeling much better this morning and slept through the WHOLE night. Probably cause I had something other than hot Water and gatorade in my stomach. I did lose 22 pounds and counting. Right now, I am averaging about 2 pound weight loss per day. I know it will slow down once I can start eating more. I see the surgeon on Wednesday who plans on trying to advance my diet from clears to soft/pureed. And I don't know about you guys, but I don't think I can ever even think about drinking broth again! Yuck!

Sorry you had kind of a rough time- glad to hear you are doing much better. You are right, the weigh tloss is sure to slow down, try not to be dissapointed when that happens. Congrats on your surgery!

I think I will totally throat punch someone if they say that I took the easy way out. I used to think that before I had surgery about people too. Boy do I know different now! Hang in there.

I had my surgery yesterday and felt okay immediately after. Day two and it's excruciating. Can't stop crying and feeling as if this was the biggest mistake ever. Oh, and I've gained 8 pounds despite having eaten nothing in three days. Someone tell me it will get better...I keep wondering if I should go back to the hospital or if this is normal. I never expected to be in so much pain after reading other people's experiences.

Be sure to read other posting in this discussion board. What you posted has been posted many times. Many people think the gain right after surgery maybe due to the IV fluids. It will get better, I was banded on 11/29. i have lost 30 pounds. I go for spans of losing a pound a day to losing a pound a week, Next week i go for my first fill. I am ready as I can eat just about anything now.

I wish i had found this discussion board before i had surgery, it would have answered a lot of questions i had.

It does get a lot better. We are the ones in control of our weight loss not the band.

Suzanne. Where you are right now is completely normal. The weight gain is temporary and over the next few days that gain will go away and then some. Take the pain mess you were given and don't let the pain catch up with you.

I'm one month out and just had my first fill which was painless I have no pain or tenderness and don't have port pain. It was the right choice and it will get better. Be well

Hi Suzanne,

I felt sore for about three weeks...Hang in there..it will get better and soon!

I didnt lose real good until I had been into it for four months..I was verry discourage and thought I had wasted alot of money we could of used for something else..

then after the third fill things..started happening for me.. Its been slow but steady....but now I dont regret having the surgery at all..its been worth every dime..even if I didn't lose another pound! I feel great and look so much better in clothing...and feel a new confidence in my job. Just remember ..better days are ahead for you......

I had ALOT of pain after my surgery which has gotten alot better all of a sudden. I switched from the liquid Lortab to liquid Motrin and that helped so much. The past two days I have not taken anything. I do still have persistent nausea which comes on around 6pm every night. Last night I had the dry heaves. But I'm hanging in there hoping that I'm on the road to recovery. So you hang in there too ok?

Is the liquid Motrin a prescription, or can I get it over the counter? The liquid Hydrocodone (Lortab) is giving me nausea which is not helping me feel any better. Thanks to everyone else for your replies...still feeling awful but it's a little bit better today.

Day 2 and 3 post op was miserable for me! I was so swollen and bloated that I looked like the Michelin Man with a tire around my stomach! Gas X and lots of walking is the only thing that helped me. I gained as well right after surgery. Here I am 6 months out and I have lost a total of 64.8 lbs. I would do it all over in a heartbeat! I feel better than I have in years. I am no longer diabetic nor do I have have high blood pressure anymore! No meds for me! Just hang in there and things will get better. Be prepared for the emotional rollercoaster you will find yourself on through this journey. That is the one thing I did not expect myself to go through. I "knew" how the band worked before my surgery and "knew" that the weight loss is slow and steady...but, for some reason I found myself "expecting" entirely too much of myself too fast. I still struggle daily with that even though I "know" I have really done great with my weight loss thus far. We are our harshest critics. Once the swelling goes down in your stomach after surgery..you will find that you are really hungry and will probably be able to eat as you did before just not to the same extent. Realize that is normal until you get your fills started and reach restriction. I have a 14cc band and I was fortunate enough to have reached pretty good restriction after only my 2nd fill. I know lots of people that it took longer. So, everyone is certainly different. Take what positive you can from this site and leave the rest behind. You will learn the ropes soon enough! =)

Good luck on your journey and hang on...it's going to be a long ride! =)

Be sure to ask your doctor before self medicating with Motrin (Ibuprofen) or any other NSAID (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drug) such as Asprin, Bufferin, Anacin, Motrin, BC powder. Many surgeons think that these medications can contribute to band erosion. If they let you have them, it's often in very low dose and with a PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitor) such as Prevacid or Prilosec also taken with them.

It can't hurt to ask and might hurt to do it on your own. :/

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
