SEVERE reflux at night

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I had surgery in October of 2009. I have had numerous fills and am pretty restricted now. A few months ago I developed severe acid reflux that was noticed at all times of the day. I spoke to my surgeon and he put me on Carafate and Protonix. Recently, I have been experiencing severe reflux in my sleep. It's not acidic so the Protonix seems to be working, however, it awakens me in the middle of a dead sleep causing me to cough and gag. Without being too descriptive, it sometimes comes out of my nose and/or mouth. I have spoken to my surgeon and he advised me not to eat or drink anything after 6PM. I have tried this with no avail. I'm terrified of aspirating in my sleep. Has anyone else ever experienced this and if so, what actions did you take? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!

Everything I read on this site and others indicates you may be too tight. I'm surprised your sugeon has not said that and had you come in for an unfil. :( Good luck.

Seconded. Definitely not normal for a surgeon to just ignore this classic sign of overfill. Hope you feel better!

After not seeing the clinic for about 9months , I wanted to get in before the holidays for a little tweak. I had been plateaued, but comfortable. But knew I was able to eat too much.

The same thing happened to me, after a 1cc fill by the PA. Identical!!! I have been in at least three times now for unfills and I am still having issues with heartburn and reflux. It's very frustrating!! It is very scary to wake up and have vomit in your mouth/throat!! This has stopped, but the heartburn continues.

Someone wrote to eat slower, which I do need to still work on, so I am going to consciously give this a try.

I hate to go back for another unfill, so I am trying to really look at my habits:no eating after supper seems to help

MOST of the time, but not always, what I am eating,CHEWING!!!! I am really bad at this too.

I have started exercising again. I had gotten lazy. This really does make a difference!!

On the upside, I have lost weight!!

My surgeon and I had a talk about this about a month ago when I went in for a barium swallow. He mentioned that a sure sign of a dilation is reflux. Personally, it would be very hard for me to get enough Fluid intake during the day before 6pm. Sounds a bit unreasonable. However, if you want some peace of mind, request a barium swallow and see if he/she can tell if you have a pouch dilation. I don't want to worry you, and it may be something that doesn't need any surgery, but just an unfill to resolve. It's better safe than sorry. He/she can also check to see if maybe you are too tight by the way the Fluid goes through the band.

Good luck to you! Reflux is awful. I had it when I was too tight and it was no fun.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
