Gained weight first day post-op!

Recommended Posts

Lost 5 pounds on my 5 day pre-op diet. I got banded yesterday and when I woke up this morning I gained 5.5 pounds!! Is this normal? How much does the bad itself weigh?

Totally normal! You are swollen from the surgery. The extra Fluid in you is weighing you down. It's ok...it will come off with time. Just concentrate on healing right now.

Oh yea this is normal from all the swellin from surgery. the band itself probably weights like 3-4 ounces if that :) Just focus on healing and you will notice that the weight starts dropping again.

I am convinced that the gas they put in you to blow up the stomach during surgery weighs something....

And while its hard... try not to weigh yourself until you go to the Dr next...

You are normal...don't worry!

Another thing, I didn't have a BM for 5 days after surgery...that had to weigh SOMETHING. Once "things" started moving again and the swelling started going down, the weight came down, too. I was convinced I was a mutant...the only living being on the planet that gained weight after WLS...but as you can see, you are not alone. :)

Like everyone else said...totally normal. Keep getting your Water in to flush it all out. Hang in there!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
