Flu Question

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever gotten the flu/throw-ups after being banded? How does the band affect it? How does throwing up affect the band? (Oddly enough, doing a search on the word 'flu' returned 0 results).

Thanks

I don't know, but the real name is influenza. And you should probably look up gastritis or vomiting since there's really no such thing as the stomach flu. Influenza is a respiratory disease. Most people who throw up say they have the stomach flu but there's no such thing.

I got the flu last year after being banded for two months. I threw up real bad, but only once. It didn't hurt my band, but I did go to the doctor and get some flu medication. I even had a flu shot too!

My surgeon said it's better to be safe and go get an anti nausea shot in the ER at the first hint of trouble...just tell them why it's important that you not throw up, and they should give you one.

I had an awful bout with the flu a couple weeks ago. I couldn't keep Water on anything down or in. After about 10 hours I was able to keep down saltines and gatorade and then slowly to more real food. At that time I had no restriction. I asked my surgeon about "throwing up" and the band and he said "Once someone has true restriction they are unable to throw up, that is why some people need an unfill or require nausea meds".

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
