Can someone explain the Week 3 plateau?

Recommended Posts

Hi All. I was banded December 6, and recovered from surgery pretty easily. Had a few sidetracks along the way, (like learning I am lactose intolerant), but overall, it's gone well. I was on Protein shakes and Water for three weeks, and lost a fair amount of weight.

Now that I'm cleared for soft foods, I'm eating smart (I think) high Protein meals, supplementing with Protein Shakes, and sipping the ever present Water. I haven't eaten anything I'd consider "wrong" (no sweets, fried foods, no alcohol), and feel like I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing.

So why has my weight loss stalled? Where I was losing about a pound a day, in the last week I've only lost two pounds, and today I'm actually up a pound. I'm confused.

Anyone have ideas about this? Why is it happening, and what can/should I do about it?

Thanks,

Dave

Same here, dude. I started the week at 251, only lost about 2.5 lbs since then. Just on the soft foods stage. Though, I must admit, my "pureed" foods are a bit more on the solid side, but soft in nature. I'm still drinking 2-3 Protein shakes a day. It's normal I think,

Remember, we haven't even had fills, and no restriction. Any weight loss at this stage is a bonus.

It sounds like you are doing terrific and should be thrilled with your weight loss. It is not reasonable to expect to lose 1 lb a day for any sustained time period. Initial weight loss is water weight. I was told to expect 1-2 lbs a week if you followed all the rules. I guess you could bump it up by exercising more - you didn't mention that - are you working out?

I know not to expect a pound a day loss to continue like it was. I'm just surprised to experience the sudden change in loss. It's like as soon as I went on soft foods, the loss stalled. It's weird.

I haven't been cleared for exercising yet. I had a hiatal hernia and a ventral hernia repaired during my band surgery, and my abdomnal muscles are still healing from their internal stitches. About all I've been able to do is walk - gently - so my activity isn't yet up to speed. My next doctor appointment is the middle of the month, and will includr my first fill, so I hope to be cleared for exercise at that time.

I hear ya. I know it'sa bonus at this point, but I was just so surprised to have things just stop so suddenly. Just wondering if it'll start dropping again at some point.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
