needing help and motivation

Hi i had my lapband surgery on 30th august and have only lost 5kgs since surgery but it is purely my fault.I have eaten anything and everything.I have no restrcition and never feel full.I am going for my 3 rd fill on 5th jan but only have small amount as my port is on its side and its very difficult to fill.I also have rheumatism of the muslces which makes exercise really quite painful which really gets me down as i want to get fit and healthy.I feel like i am failing and dont know how to pick myself out of my rut.

Has anyone been in my situation or have any advice or ideas to help me pick my self up it will all be very helpful.

Let's get back on track! No time like the present. You posted and asked for support, so you have not given up and still want it. Go back to measuring your food and get all of your Water in. I think those two rules alone are a good start. No more than 1/2 cup per meal (is what my doctor says). Can you take 3, 10 minute walks today? If not, try doing 2. Any movement will help. It's easy to to get in a rut but you have to take the steps to get back on tract. You will be proud of yourself for getting back to it. You went through the surgery and pain for a reason. You want to be healthy and happy. Go for it! YOU have the choice to make it happen. It's tough, but there are SO manny people on here fighting the same battle, and winning. Go for it!!!

Don't give up Lacey, you can find support here. Many of us fall off the wagon every now and again -- you can get back up, just as we have. You just need a little support to get rolling ... consider it done!

You say you have "rheumatism", we don't use that term "medically" much here in the U.S. anymore, but I read that it is still used in other countries and can sometimes mean "fibromyalgia". Are you on pain meds for it? I have spinal stenosis (which is actually arthritis of the spine) which can be very painful. I had back surgery in 2004 and cannot run anymore, but I walk. I walk 1 1/5 miles 5 days a week. Every week or so I add another 1/4 mile. What I have learned about arthritis is that a body in motion stays in motion. So, if I don't move I will continue to be stiff and in pain. Do I wake up some mornings feeling like "nooooo, I can't do it"? Yes, I do, but I do it anyway because I have found that I am getting stronger. My Ortho told me that while my spinal stenosis will not get better, the weight loss and strengthening of the muscles around the spine from exercising will help make my back stronger. He was RIGHT! Wow! So, if you don't have fibromyalgia, but you do have arthritis, start small and slow (and be sure to take pain meds -- I take Tylenol arthritis because it is time released). I don't know how much you weigh so I don't know if you are morbidly obese or obese or what. But, exercise is a big part of this journey. You may want to start with the food as suggested by hokiemama and move on to the exercise when you have lost a few pounds more. YOU CAN DO THIS Lacey!

Just don't be too hard on yourself. You are not in a race with anyone. Doesn't matter how long it takes, just keep trying. It will get better. You are NOT failing.

It's really hard to fully use the band if you don't have restriction. I understand that your port is hard to access but really talk to your Dr. about making a plan to get you to full restriction so you can start losing. It took me a long time to get restriction, but once I did the weight fell off. Don't get discouraged - the band is great once you get restriction.

Thank you all and Happy new Year and im going to make it just that happy new year.I have started my healthly eating today , im already having cravings as i have christmas food around the house that im trying to avoid.

Lacey,

First, you say you don't feel 'full' but that's the wrong 'feeling' to look for. What you should be looking for is a cessation of hunger. The band works by putting pressure on the vagus nerves, which then tell the stomach to stop producing ghrelin, the hunger hormone. If you eat 3-4 oz of Protein, 1/2 cup of vegies and 1/4 cup of carbs (beans, rice, potatoes, etc.), you should be able to go 4-5 hours without feeling hungry. If you have blood sugar issues, you may need a small Protein pickmeup midway between your meals (hard boiled egg, 1 oz of protein, low carb/low cal protein drink). I used to but no longer do now that my blood sugar is controlled...and without insulin these days!

If you're dealing with a constant hunger, then you do need a fill. If your port is on its side, ask your doctor how this can be fixed. I know they can fix them, without surgery, even if they flip completely so one would assume if it's partially flipped, they can also fix it. In any case, get your fill if you're hungry. If you aren't hungry, then you're already at your sweet spot.

If you feel you can't exercise at this time, then don't. Studies show that exercise is not necessary to lose weight so there's nothing holding you back on losing the weight right now. Hopefully, as the weight comes off, you'll feel better enough that you are able to move more. Heck, I detest exercise, but I actually have my moments when I *want* to go out for a walk now...something that never happened in the past.

Rheumatism is a very generic term to cover hundreds of unidentified aches and pains and isn't really used in modern medical context anymore. As near as I can tell, they now call it fibromyalgia when you have unidentified aches and pains and they can't find a medical reason. A friend of mine was diagnosed with fibromyalgia years ago. She refused to accept that there was not a reason for her pain so, based on her reading, decided to change her diet to exclude processed foods. Protein - broiled or roasted, fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains. She eliminated wheat and sugar at this time as well. Within a month or so, her pain disappeared. I don't know what type of diet you're eating, but perhaps restrict your carbs to those found in vegetables and eliminate wheat and sugar and see what happens.

Toss the Christmas food. I cleaned out my pantry and got rid of all the 'temptations'. Unopened stuff went to the homeless shelter. The rest went into the trash can...and no I didn't feel guilty with all the starving children in China. My eating the food won't help them any.

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

        Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
