Caffeine anyone???

Recommended Posts

So Pre-op I was a huge Diet Coke fan. I drank almost a 12 pack a day - to the exclusion of everything else!!! So you can imagine the lovely withdrawl I went through:blink:

So now I am 1 month post -op and have not had any caffeine in 5 weeks and doing fairly well. I really do not have any desire to go back to the Diet Coke, but I think I might like a regular cup of coffee or Dunkin Donuts Iced coffee from time to time. So does anyone know the deal with caffeine? I was told that I would need to give caffeine up once I had the surgery. I just wondering why - the nutrionist never really gave me a straight answer. Why is the caffeine so bad for bansters???

Same w/ the diet coke here too. But I gave it up about 6 weeks ago.

My books says:

"caffeine is an appetite stimulant which is detrimental to initial weight loss and long-term weight control. caffeine is also a diuretic which can cause dehydration."

hmm.

My doc said no caffeine for one week after surgery. I had my first cup of liquid heaven (coffee) on Friday. Just one a day and watching to make sure I am drinking enough Water.< /p>

The only things I was told to not have were alcoholic beverages and smoking! Definite no no's but people on here still do it so I guess you can live with that with the band. I WILL NEVER give up my coffee for anything or anybody. I love my coffee every morning and especially when we go out to eat, it helps to relax my band so that I can eat. I live for my coffee, especially in the colder temperatures of winter, even though it does not get too cold in Arizona during the winter, it is really very soothing to me and my band. As far as dehydration, I drink so much Water during the day that it really does not matter about the coffee eliminating some of it. Coffee satisfys me when I am hungry and it really helps to relax me before my meals, I try not to have it at night at home, but it is a life saver when we go out to eat. I think it depends on the individual, if it works for you, do it, my Dr. never said it was a problem. Now gum chewing makes people very hungry, did your Dr. tell you to not do anything to trigger your appetite like that? There are so many good ideas that come up on this website and I read on here every day, you will find out that what works for you, might not work for somebody else, this is an individual journey and only you can decide what works best for you. Good luck and listen to your body and your mind and you will do just fine.

I was a coffee drinker prior to and still am post op- my dietician recommended reducing the caffiene. So I switched to half caf folgers. It's not bad. Absolutely NO SODA. And caffiene in large amounts from what I understand can act as a diaretic (sp?) and can cause dehydration from what she told me. But who knows every doc out here seems to be different.

hope this helps

My doctor said I could have Regular coffee. My Nut says caffeine dehydrates you and to have Reg. coffee in the morning but to switch over to Decaf. I work from home and keep my thermostate at 60 (I know some frugal New Englanders are calling me a spend thrift) so I need hot beverages.< /p>

I love my morning coffee!

I didn't think I was allowed to drink coffee from reading all the posts here pre op.

The day after my surgery I was still only allowed to sip Water and by lunchtime I cried. I just wanted something with taste, broth would have been fine. So the nurse called the Dr and he ordered me a coffee! I was so surprised but didn't argue. It was the Dr's orders after-all! tongue.gif

I enjoy my morning coffee everyday and don't feel guilty about it.

I'd love to enjoy a cup of coffee these days. Nothing like a good cup of steaming hot, freshly brewed coffee to satisfy things. I live near Seattle, and around here, good coffee is the LAW! :)

But guess what? Even though my Nut says it's okay, I'm finding the taste absolutely awful! Doesn't matter what I do - I keep trying different brews and whatever, and I just can't get my head around the taste of it since I was banded two weeks ago. What's up with that?

Hmm...I had never heard no alcohol before. I know they don't want you to drink a lot - as it is empty calories, but I have never heard it is a big no no. I don't drink but maybe once or twice a year...as far as alcohol goes. I am too cheap!

As far as caffeine I know post op they discourage it as the carbonation can cause your band to slip - not to mention it will make you gassy. (literally bubbles in your throat - it is wierd!) But after about three months I tried some caffeine free diet pop (I am addicted to the flavor, not the caffeine) and I am OK with it....I can't drink pop with meals or anytime near when I am eating....but I enjoy having a pop in the morning and one at night....that's my splurge! :P

You will find, by reading posts etc, that everyone is different in their lapband journey! Some folks can drink pop again without problem and others say they can't at all....some can eat eggs, other can't ever again.....you will just have to find what works for you! Good luck!

I have been 2 years since surgery and was told to give up all forms of caffine drink after surgery. I was able to quit the soda pop no problem, but have continued to drink coffee. I understand that coffee dehydrates and isn't good for the stomach. However I try to drink coffee at reasonable amounts and have cut back.

I drink coffee all through out the day. I drink Decaf as I have bad anixiety so no caffine needed for me. My Doctor never said no coffee once I was through the first month. I have to have coffee in the morning to be able to take all my pills. I have not had a diet coke in 17 months. My doctor said no more.

Hi Dave. Have been following your posts since before you were banded. You are always saying sensible stuff. This is my first post though. I'm in Australia. 5 days post op and tried my normal skinny Capp yesterday and it tasted awful - I thi k it was the milk - just too rich. I got through half the cup in about an hour but it was almost iced coffee by then! Was wondering whether it was just me but pleased to see I'm not alone. Oh well I guess another damn Protein Shake.< /p>

I have a large latte every morning. I pretend it's in the name of protein! I didn't for the first month or so though. To the alcohol question, I drink that too. All things in moderation, but some wine or a margarita every now and again never killed anyone!

Wow, thanks! I try to post things I think others would want to know about. I appreciate the good feelings. Love Australia. Spent a glorious week in Sydney a gazillion years ago, and would love to go back. Maybe one day!

I'm with you on those damn Protein shakes - I've had three today already, and it's not even supper time.

One thing about the coffee topic I learned - since being banded I'm apparently lactose intolerant. I do put a bit of milk in my coffee. So maybe that's the problem. Will keep trying, and we'll see how things develop. Stay tuned...

Dave

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
