No 2-week liquid pre-op diet required!

Recommended Posts

I wish I didnt have to do one, it has been one of the hardest things I had to do in my life. and the sad thing is I havent lost one pound on this diet. So discouraging and I get banded on the 15th

I think surgeons adjust their plan to suit their patients, and what they know works (or doesn't.) I did a three week Atkins-like pre-op diet, (high Protein, very low carb), and it went well. I kind of liked the reduction of my eating method pre-op, as a way to slide into the post-op liquids only diet I'm on now. I've made the transition pretty well, so far. (I'm seven days post-op.)

The pre-op diet isn't so much about weight loss, as it is reducing the size of your liver. Don't concern yourself about pounds lost right now. Just get ready to have your surgery, and prepare yourself for what comes next.

Good luck!

Dave

My doc doesnt not require a pre-op diet but sometimes he will tell the patient they should reduce certain foods etc if he sees that their liver is fattier then normal.

I had a low bmi and my liver wasnt that bad so it was no worry for me.

I finally had my surgeon consult today. My insurance does not require any supervised weight loss, but the Surgeon's program requires 3 months and the psych eval. That's all behind me. I'm going to pick the Lap Band over the Realize band. I asked about the 2 week liquid diet, and he says he does not require it, and that it is (and I quote) "Not advantageous to the patient" He stated that he has done lapbands laproscopically on 600lb patients and he has the tools to move a large liver out of the way, so he isn't worried about it. He told me not to GAIN any weight and still TRY to lose, but no liquid diet is required. Anyone else hear of this?

Lucky you! B)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
