20 Days til Suregery-5 days til liquid diet

Recommended Posts

After tons of stress about pre-existing conditions and being turned down by insurance company was finally approved last Monday for a Dec. 20th Surgery date. I'm a Type II Diabetic and am hopeful to put that disease in remission and start felling good again. Start liquid diet on the 6th and I'm anxious about it-two weeks on liquids alone feels like an eternity to a guy who is always hungrier than a runaway slave-lol. I'm excited and scared all at the same time-I'm thankful for this community. I'm open to any feedback/advice.

It will go by faster than you think. I am 16 months out and if I find myself going off track for more than a day or two. I return to liquids just to get my focus off food. As long as you get enough protien you might not even get hungry after a couple of days. It is so worth the two weeks to get the weight off and know you are not alone in your fight to keep it off. When you get discouraged come to this site and read and research and talk to people going through what you are or have gone through it. It will help so much. Do you have a supportive wife or girlfriend that will also help, maybe she would do a liquid diet for a couple of days with you, you never know? Need anything message me. Good luck.

Thank you for the kind words of support. It's all so confusing some times G-Bypass versus LapBand-I see you have lost 80lbs. that's extremely inspirational-congratulations. I appreciate you talking me down from the liquid diet ledge-I'll definitely check in when i get started. My sister is going to do liquid with me, but she lives across the country. Wife is thin and doesn't really understand this whole thing-said to me tonight she is sure i will get it removed soon after I have surgery. Thinks keeping off weight is easy.

I know three absolutes in my life as they pertain to weight. i can put it on really easy. i can take it off fairly easily too. i just can't maintain any weight at all-It's been a constant yo-yo.

Hi Alberto,

Congratulations on getting approved for your lap band surgery. Your life is about to change for the better.

I had lap band surgery on 9/17/10 and have lost 28 lbs to date. I was placed on a 10-day pre-op liquid diet consisting of 5 to 6 (depending on which shake chosen) Protein shakes a day. I chose carnation instant Breakfast no sugar added variety based upon ease of purchase, good taste, and variety offered (availability of 3 flavors: chocolate, vanilla and strawberry; I used all 3). I was also allowed to have unlimited fat free chicken broth, coffee/tea, diet sodas (with no caffeine), SF ice pops, SF Jello, and a limit of 2 cups of a few low calorie vegetables. Other than these small items, I only ate Protein Shakes and no solid food during this period. I was told to keep my calories to a maximum of 1,000 calories per day, which I was able to do.

You would think that this diet would make me hungry all the time. It did not. Instead, I often felt bloated and often could not even get in the 6 shakes I was allowed on my diet. By the last day of this diet, I was truly tired of this diet and was glad it was over. It was very challenging to remain on this diet, especially when so many LBT members were on modified liquid diets (where you eat one solid meal per day) or were not on this diet at all. I don't feel that way anymore. I'm glad I was on this diet.

Why did I change my mind about being on this per-op liquid diet? This 10-day liquid diet energized me to help me to lose more weight for such a short period of time than at any other time in my entire life. During this 10-day period, I lost 9 lbs, which equates to almost 1 lb a day. Best of all, it jump started my weight loss because this weight loss has never come back to me. I have continued to lose weight each week, except during the last week (Thanksgiving week) where I remained the same weight as the week before. I usually gain weight during the holidays so this plateau is a win for me. That’s an incredible feat for me.

Like Cheri, who has already lost 80 lbs, I also find I go back at times to a strictly liquid diet when I appear out of sorts or have stopped losing weight. This quickly gets me back on track. It is much easier to do the liquid diet once you have been through the long 10 to 14 day period. It seems like such a breeze over 1-2 days.

Do not fear this liquid diet. It will jump start your weight loss and, as Cheri stated, it will go by quicker than you realize.

Good luck on your band journey.

Maxi

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
