Gallbladder surgery after lap band

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I have a question for any of you that have had your gallbladder removed post LAP-BAND®.

My LB surgeon is no longer affiliated with my Insurance so my GP referred me to a cardio thorasic surgeon. He told me that he won't do the surgery laproscopically (sp?). He needs to do an open incision so that he won't accidentally cut into my band or port etc.

Has this been the case for any of you? I saw my LAP-BAND® surgeon today and he is freaking me out saying my band could get infected and that this surgeon doesn't know what he is doing. I am so confused but know that I can't go much longer with the pain I am experiencing.

Any advice? ;)

My daughter had her gallbladder removed about a year after her lapband surgery with no problems. Maybe you should try to find a lapband surgeon on your insurance plan who can do it. I wouldn't go with the one who wants to open you up. Good luck!

I had my GB pulled three months after lap band surgery. My lap band surgeon did the procedure himself laproscopicaly (SP) the same LB surgical entries were used. I was relieved,,very simple I had no problems afterwards at all.

Ditto on finding a new doctor. I can't believe this guy would be so cavalier about opening you up. Everyone I know who had their gallbladder done laparascopically had a very fast recovery time. My mom had hers done the old fashioned way and has a huge scar down her stomach, not to mention that she was 3 months healing with all sorts of restrictions on what she couldn't do.

I had mine taken out 18 months after my lap band - but the same surgeon did both operations. I was back at work in less than a week. I've heard the "traditional" way is extremely painful and leaves a very long scar. Hope you can find a surgeon to do it laproscopically.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
