Due to my "gurgling" the PA has ordered an Upper GI test AKA Barium Swallow. My question is: Does the stuff you have to drink cause bathroom issues after wards?

I had scan a few years back and the stuff gave me bad bathroom issues after wards. I scheduled my exam for 7:45am and will be going to school after the test. As we can not leave the room to use the bathroom this could be an issue for me.

Anyone know?

My upper GI a few years ago involved a few small sips of barium and I was fine. No bathroom issues.

Every time I have this test done...constipation something awful. It also makes me a little nauseated...just because it tastes so bad. Best of luck!!

I almost vomitted getting a barium swallow. It was horrible for me, but for other people it's not as bad.

Good luck to you.

I expect some of that. It will be early, I have bad gag reflex, will have empty stomach and that stuff is awful.

Blech....

I had a radiologist once who had me drink milk for contrast instead of barium. worked quite well.

if you suspect you might have diarrhea from the barium, take some immodium with you and take a dose after the exam is over.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
