Pre-op diet recommendation

Recommended Posts

My surgeon only requires a one day pre-op diet of clear fluids. But it seems as if several people are losing quite a bit of weight on their required pre-op diet, so I'm considering putting myself on a pre-op diet. My surgery date is November 10th. What are your requirements for your pre-op diet and how is it going?

Hey! I'm getting banded on november 10th as well! My doctor has me on a liquid diet with 4 Meal Replacement protiene shakes a day, and 2 other meals such as Soup, broth, pudding, crystal light, etc. That starts on November 3rd but I'm starting the first. As for this week, I'm doing my own little diet, consisting of drinking a protiene shake for Breakfast and eating something small and healthy every two hours to keep my metabolism up, and I've totally illiminated carbs. It's actually been easy, but then again it's only the second day lol. Drs give you a specific diet to shrink the fat in the liver, to reduce complications during surgery. Every little bit helps! Good luck on your journey, and I wish you the best.:huh2:

My Dr requires his patients to do a 2 week long liquid diet. His office gave me Optifast Protein Drinks. So everyday I would have 3 Protein Shakes and 1 chicken broth Soup. (And some sf ice pops, and sf pudding, and crystal light)

If you buy Protein drinks make sure you look at the ingredients.. you want as low as sugar and carbs that you can get and the more Protein the better. The Atkins protein shakes are a good example of that. Another tip is to keep drinking them along with the other sf items throughout the day... to keep you from getting a huge craving. I'm not going to lie... it's not the easiest thing to do, but it will make you healthier for the surgery. Good luck!! :huh2:

You will most likely be doing a post-op liquid diet.

I had to do a 2 week pre-op. I chose Medi-fast, and to me, it was pure torture. If I didn't have to do it (under threat of my surgery being canceled if I gained weight, because it would show non-compliance), I would not have.

You have the rest of your life for weight loss. Don't go through the misery of a liquid diet with no band if you don't have to.

Just my two cents. :huh2:

My dr. seems to have me on pretty much the same type of pre-op diet. I am getting banded on the 11th and I am also planning to start the pre op diet on the 1st. The more weight I can lose, the better!!

Here is my pre-op diet... I started it 2 days early on 10-16. Beside one or two low points it has not been too hard and all and I am actually enjoying it.

Meal #1 1/2 cup each of two choice from: nonfat yogurt, eggs, fruits/vegatable or Cereal.

Meal #2 Protein Drink... 20 grams Protein, must be low carb/no carb and low fat

Meal #3 3-4 oz of chicken or fish, plus 1 cup raws vegatable or 1/2 cook veg

Meal #4 Protein Drink same as above

8+ glass of Water a day.. No sweetened drinks or diet sodas.. I was told to no caffiene, however I still have one cup of coffee at work, rest of the time it's Decaf.< /p>

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
