What exactly is a mini gastric bypass?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

A coworker says she is going to have a mini gastric bypass. I've read here that not many people choose it. Can someone explain to me just what it is? I didn't have much luck when I googled it. She says she's not interested in getting the lap band because she's not willing to go for fills. She didn't say anything about getting a plain old bypass and I didn't think to ask. .

I have no interest in trying to change her mind, but I also don't think she's done her research, and I'm curious. .

Thanks in advance.

Debbie.

Sounds a bit like she's talking about a Gastric Sleeve to me

I could be way off though!

GASTRIC SLEEVE

I know a few people who have had this, it's sometimes done in the UK as a pre-bypass operation to get the patient to a safe weight for a bypass if they are very big but most sleevers have the op as their only surgery and do very well.

Thank you.

Now my coworker says she may not go to the seminar because her mother's birthday is this weekend and it depends on what day she wants to go out for lunch or dinner, I can't remember which. She's also afraid of "looking old" if she loses weight too fast.

I don't know if she knows what she wants to do. *sigh*

I think she's afraid of the unknown, if she has been overweight for a long time, she may not be happy with it but the familiarity of the situation is somehow reassuring.

If you put on a lot of weight you are liable to get loose skin , even dieting conventionally.

Loose skin is worse if you are very overweight, it's to do with genetics, age etc

You don't necessarily avoid it by losing weight slower although it can lessen the effect somewhat.

I think she has to face the fact that she will change and have to have a totally different attitiude to food and life in general.

Maybe she's afraid of losing a layer of protection that fat gives her? Or maybe the fat is an excuse not to do more with her life?

At any rate, losing the weight is going to be a positive change to her health and possibly she will enjoy the changes , rather than be scared of what's ahead.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
