What no pre-op special diet?

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm getting my band in Belgium on 13th Oct by Dr Bruno Dillemans.

I've been advised there is no need for a pre op diet and that I can eat normal food until the night before the operation?

This seems to be very different from what I read in these forums, has anyone else had this experience?

thanks:huh2:

I was told two days ago that my surgeon does NOT require the two week liquid pre-surgery diet that I've seen so many here write about. However, he said I need to "strictly" focus on Protein during that time, eliminating as much carbohydrate as possible. The reason is that eliminating carbs will shrink your liver, and if your liver is enlarged and in the way, they can't proceed with the surgery.

Not to worry, I read many posts and thought the same, so I questioned my nutritionist and she said there is no wrong or right way, the surgeon is the one that performs surgery and it is his/her confidence level in what they want to see. I got banded on Sept 22 in Providence RI and there was no pre-op for me except for the day before surgery, all liquids. As you read on you will see that others pop up from time to time wondering the same thing, "why no pre-op". Some people opt to do it on their own, I'd just do what your surgeon wants, he's the one who is expecting a certain level of obstacles and this one might not be one for him/her. Good luck to you!

I only had a 2-day pre-op liquid diet, but I put myself on a high protein-low carb diet for a month before just to get me in the right mindset so I'd be setting myself up for success. It really worked for me-- I got a headstart on weight loss and I feel good.

But there are lots of people who don't have a pre-op and they do great too. If you think it would help you, you can always institute a diet on your own but it sounds like your surgeon is comfortable with no pre-op and you can trust that too.

The reason for the pre-op diet is to lose weight and hopefully shrink the liver somewhat since it has to be moved around for the band to be placed. It depends on what the doctor wants you to do.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
