Post Op/cycle-hormonal changes

Recommended Posts

Is it just me or did any of the ladies have hormonal, menstrual changes after surgery. I am day 7 post op today and within 2 days after surgery menses came 2 weeks early, which explains why I was a crying, blubbering mess 1st few days after surgery. Nurse told me that can happen. Any one else experience these changes post op?

Yep, mine came early too. I thought it was because of the dramatic weight loss. I loss 13 pounds after four days of liquids and that's what I thought caused mine to come. IDK?

Yep! It is so common for women to have menstrual issues after surgery. The first reason is because surgery puts your body into a state of shock. I had my period the week before surgery and then again the week after.

The second reason is because excess estrogen is stored in fat! So if you're losing a lot of weight in a short amount of time its going to take your body some time to adjust to the hormonal changes as you get rid of that estrogen.

This is the reason so many of us overweight women have fertility problems, PCOS, and weight related hormone issues. Luckily for me, my birth control pills seem to keep things pretty even.

Yea, I think I am going to get back on my BC because since surgery I have had a period every month but it just comes whenever it's not on regular schedule. Sometimes its a week early or a week late. Right now I am another week late!

Mine came two weeks early as well. I actually called up my OBGYN and scheduled an appointment to have my birth control pills adjusted. The combination of weight loss and the need for a pill adjustment had me on a cycle from hell lasting wayyyyyyy longer than necessary!

Mine was wicked crazy!! My cycle started on 7/24/10...lasted for the normal 4-5 days that mine regulary do. I had my surgery on the 10th of August....and got my period again on 19th of August. I then had it for 4.5 weeks afterwards. Some days were regular, some days were light, and some days were super heavy with thick clots. Sorry...TMI, I know...but just sharing! :) I had a visit to my OB-GYN and she said that everything looked fine. They drew some blood b/c she wanted to do a test on the hormones and to see if I was anemic from all of the bleeding. I haven't had the results....but I was just pleased to hear that she thought it was from the 22.5 lb weight loss in a month and a half that caused it. Plus, my surgeon said that surgery is such a stress on your body....that it'll end up doing some weird things! Yup...he was right! I'm just glad that it is over!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
