Confused and bummed about apnea

Recommended Posts

I was banded April 7 and have lost a lot of weight. I have seen really good things with my meds and medical issues. I started having problems with my C-pap so I thought I was needing it less. They sent out a titrating machine and determined my pressure has gone from 10 to 13!

I don't understand how losing weight could make it worse!

Oh, well. I am off my diabetes meds and would rather sleep with a C-pap than be diabetic!

Anyone else have this experience? :blushing:

Froggie, please tell me what kind of problems you were having with your cpap. I thought that after losing weight I could stop using my cpap but my sis told me that I stopped breathing while sleep one night. I started using my machine again but started having big problems with bad congestion in my chest. So I cleaned it every night instead of every 2-3 nights. And I lowered my humidifier. I continued to have problems and just felt sick in general when I used it. I couldn't sleep and would take it off during the night.

What is a titrating machine? Did you have to go back to the sleep doc or to your GP?

Currently my cpap is on the shelf in my room because I absolutely cannot sleep with it on. I also have asthma.

i've had a cpap for 13 years.

i have lost a little over 60 lbs.

i like my machine and have gotten so used it i would probably use it even if i didn't need it.

i can nap without it, no snoring and holding my breath but haven't tried going without it all night.

it's become my friend and i love the white noise it makes.

i stopped using mine and i had been using one for a decade. i was finding that it was blowing air into my stomach and making me burp over and over so i assumed my pressure was too high. i do kind of miss the comfort of using it but am sleeping all the way through the night without any problems. i have an appt with my pcp in october and we'll see if he wants to send me back for another sleep study.

i was curious what the titration machine was too. i thought you needed a full sleep study to determine whether changes in pressure were necessary.

The new trend for sleep studies now is doing them at home- we have numerous companies that come to the office and talk to the ENT docs about the home machines.... you wear it at home, its records and then you return it and the report is made- kind of like a holter monitor- IMO this is soooo much better than the sleep lab- I HATED my sleep study

The machine they gave me is a self adjusting machine that records what you need to prevent the apnea episode each night. You wear it for 2-3 weeks. I slept really good with it. They picked it up Thursdayand said my average was almost 13. I was at a 10 before. I did not have a full sleep study. I will insist on one when I lose all my weight. I was able to do this through my PCP.

About a month or so ago I started having multiple times at night where air would come into my mouth from the pressure in my nose. I would wake up doing little puffs to expell the air from my mouth. I was waking up a lot and started having headaches, yawning, feeling generally lousy. Getting up in the morning was becoming harder and harder. My mask with the little pillows in my nose does not seem to work any more with this machine, although I used the same mask with their machine and had no trouble. I also had sore throat and very dried out mouth upon awakening, so I must have been breathing with my mouth open.

For the weeks on the machine, I slept good and felt good. I also lost excellent weight. Since they took it away, I am sleeping horrible again and feeling worse each day. I also have not lost weight since they took it back. Also feel mildly depressed.

I am waiting for them to come out and adjust my machine so I can sleep again.

I just can't figure it out as my husband says I am not snoring much at all.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
