How soon after surgery can you exercise?

Recommended Posts

I'm 3 weeks post op today...and feeling really well! Just the port area is a little tender to touch.

I had my post op visit last week and didn't ask when I could exercise again... My next appointment is on 9/24 (when we will schedule 1st fill!)

How soon after surgery did you resume "the gym"? I know I am allowed to walk so I can do the treadmill, but what about arms and legs? Probably going to wait a little longer on my core/abs...

I walked a lot until about 5 weeks then added a little bit of jogging, though not much at all. I was told no weight lifting/lifting anything heavy for 6 weeks. Maybe you can start small but I would be careful. When 6 weeks came I exercised like no other!

I was cleared for walking immediately, but not allowed to return to the gym until after my 4-week check. I actually forgot to ask about it at that appointment; the doctor had mentioned the timing preop, so I just shot an email to the office double-checking, and was given the go-ahead.

Since you have a while before your next appointment, I'd call or email to check.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
