Question about vomiting

Recommended Posts

I'm having a hysterectomy next week and my surgeon's nurse told me that if I have any post op vomiting to immediately let my Ob/Gyn or my surgeon know so that I can get put on meds to stop it. She said they don't want me throwing up at all.

Is this just b/c my band is new or what? I mean if you get a stomach virus are you still supposed to take meds instead of throwing up?

From what I understand, in general it's not good to throw up with the band. Yes, I've heard they give you meds to not throw up if you have a stomach virus.

What I'd do is tell the anesthesiologist to give you some anti-nausea meds. I had a hyster last yr, and recovered really fast and well. No issues at all with being sick or anything (I didn't have the band though). So I'm sure you'll be fine.

My Dr gave me a prescription for these little chewable tablets (I can look up the name when I get home) to keep with me at all times (FOREVER) in case I get nauseous. My nurse flipped out when I casually mentioned I needed to get the prescription filled. She said that if I get a stomach virus or motion sick on a cruise or anything I needed to take the tablet immediately b/c the stomach violently contracts when you throw up and it can cause band slippage and ripping of the sutures holding the band in place.

I had a stomach virus this past week and immediately called my bariatric doctor. They told me that once I stop vomiting and can start eating again to just have warm liquids the first couple of days and then move to mushies for a couple of days.

I'm not a doctor, but seems to me that if you have a stomach virus, it's best to get it out of your system and not just take meds to make you not throw up.

I know the dangers of vomiting, but you can't go the rest of your life popping a pill to keep from throwing up, can you?

I don't know, this, like almost everything else having to do with the band, is different among doctors.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
