How to decide on a surgeon?

Recommended Posts

How did you decide on your surgeon? There are several in the Nashville area that I am considering for one reason or another but

I just don't know who to pick...

I am hoping to have my surgery by the end of the year so would it make more sense to go with a surgeon who didn't use a hospital but rather a surgery center?

I talked to the one hospital where I have been to their consultation and staff told me it would be possible to have surgery this year but no guarantee as my 90 day program would complete in early November.

Cost is important because I must pay 10% (90 - 10 plan)... But if I wait until next year I have to pay the deductible again.

Any recommendations/help would be appreciated,

I was referred to my surgeon by my primary care provider.

I did alot of research on this site for my surgeon. I went to 2 separate consults with different surgeons. I went with the surgeon who made me the most comfortable and had the best reviews. good luck

I did some research, looked at online doctor reviews, and in the end came here and asked about my surgeon. It's definitely important to do some research!

A lot of doctors have seminars that you can go to.

Also I ruled out one doctor by going to her support group. We were invited to attend before surgery and you really find out at lot at these things. I found out that she really only had a part time staff and also that they were training office staff (not even RN's) to do the fills and even then you could not get in for a month or more. I cancelled my surgery and went somewhere else and I have been very happy.

Go a little early to the groups, this is when all the people complain.

I checked insurance company (Aetna) website and to whose name came out. Then I went to his seminar. Made an appointment for consultation and from their decided he was the one. Him and his staff are very nice and professional.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
