I cheated! Please help! :(

Recommended Posts

I cheated on my pre-op diet ALL weekend and I feel awful. Besides that my stomach is mad at me, I feel so guilty. I feel like such a failure. Thank goodness I've seen the light, but I am soooo worried. My surgery is 1 week from today and I'm worried my liver won't be small enough to do the surgery. What am I gonna do?? What if they turn me away?? Is there any way to shrink my liver in 1 week???

Please help! I'm desperate

I feel almost certain that you will be just fine. I ate a few times during my 2 week presurgery period. My doctor said that patients starting with a smaller BMI are not likely to have really enlarged livers. Just start now with high Protein and low to no carbs. You will do great.

I would call your doctors office and talk to them about what you ate to be certain. The worst thing that can happen would be going in there and get turned away. At least you can be upfront with them and see what they say. Good luck.

Call your doctor. Tell them what happened. The worst thing they will probably do is push your date back a little (and I doubt that).

The bigger issue for me is the self-sabotage stuff. We all do it - that's why we are getting banded I suppose. Instead of feeling guilty, resolve to talk to your doctor and get back on the program - and LOVE YOURSELF and give yourself the BEST ODDS!!!!!!!!! You can do it.

If it makes you feel any better, I was banded today. I also did a 2 week liquid diet, but I was allowed to eat Soup for supper. I hate Soup with a passion. On Wednesday, I ate 2 tacos. I checked the carb info on them to see if it would be okay to eat.

The doctor told me my liver was perfect. It was nice and small, and he could tell I had done good on the diet. I have a high BMI, and I was worried about it. Just make sure that you get back on track now, and watch what you eat.

my dr only requires a 1 week preop diet. So it must be possible to get what you need out of 1 week. Mine starts on Friday but I started yesterday... had a bit of a relaxed diet while camping last week adn would like to make up for those few pounds before I go in!

Don't put yourself down for "cheating"... it will only make it easier to do it again!

My doctor requires a 7 day preop too, but they didn't even let me know about the surgery until there were fewer than 7 full days. All and all, I had 4 1/2 days of clear liquid diet. Just follow your diet for the next 7 days, you should be fine.

I think you will be okay. My surgeon only needs us to eat Atkins for 1 week. The Bariatric Center that I go to changed their rules only a few weeks ago, they also had the 2 week liquid diet before surgery. But with all the new information and studies, they changed it to 1 week of Atkins, and you will get the same results with the liver.

Just do your best with the time you have left, and you should be okay. But if you will feel better, call the Dr.s office, tell them and hear what they have to say.

Good luck!!!!

I cheated too. Thanks for being honest about it. Somehow that makes me feel better :blushing: I got back on the horse, so to speak, and have been fine since. I am 8 days out at this point and except for one day, I have been really good. I think it's fine based on everything I have read about everyone else. This is why we are getting the band right? Boy do I need it and this just reminded me once again why. Hang in there!

Thank you all for your support!! I have 4 days left and am doing much better. I write a big "NO" on the top of my hand every day to remind myself not to reach for any food. I know that's silly, but it helps me. Today has been much easier. I don't crave any food and I'm not as hungry. I will call my doctor's office tomorrow morning just to make sure. I hope everything goes okay on Monday. I think 4 days is enough to shrink my liver enough. I'm still nervous though.

I'll let you all know what happens on Monday! Wish me luck!

I was in the same boat. just breathe, i cheated until the surgery. my dr did not turn me away, he worked very hard on me and i made out fine. he had to cut alot of muscle to get the band in and i have an immune defiency. i have been where you are and i can just offer a prayer for you. peace be on you and the angels protecting you in the operating room on that surgery day.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
