When I went to my seminar, the surgeon talked about the possibility of death. However I dont remember factual numbers. But I do remember him saying that if you have a surgeon that knows what he/she is doing and is good at what they are doing it is far less likely to happen. Also, he said that most of the deaths that do occur from this procedure is due to underlying health problems. The patient may have more serious issues and the media doesnt show that side of the death.

I am extremely confident in my surgeon and the whole procedure. I hope you find some comfort too!

I believe the number they are throwing out now is 1 in 2,000 versus 1 in 250 for bypass. I've never heard of anyone directly dying because of the surgery. If anything people die from unlying conditions that are unknown/are left unvoiced before surgery. This is why it's important to tell your surgeon everything the day of surgery. If something doesn't feel right, let them know!

I had the fear of dying too, seeing as it was my first surgery at 19, but, I trusted my doctors and kept positive thoughts!

There is a risk of complications when you have any kind of surgery. No matter how big or small. You just have to remember to let your Dr. know about any help problems you may have.

You can also think about the risk you are taking every day by being overweight. We take risks all the time in life...i.e, getting married, having kids. We can never know the outcome of anything we do. I could leave my job today and get hit by a bus, but that won't stop me from taking the risk of crossing the street.

I know it's hard to think about this when you have kids (I have 2), but just tell yourself you are doing this to live longer for your little girl......and for yourself as well!

Good luck and I hope everything works out for you.

Thank you for putting that in perspective.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
