Is it normal to think about the foods you can't have?

Recommended Posts

I am just starting into the 'pureed' stage and I think of all the foods I WISH I could have. I am strictly following the doctors orders. But I would be lying if I said I didn't miss regular food. Does this 'craving' go away??

Yes, it's normal. It gets easier with time--and as you approach restriction.

I agree. Betsy's posts are VERY inspiring. Yes, it's normal to crave. I've never been super crazy about pizza but guess what I craved (so much it was painful!) the first 3 or so weeks after surgery? Plus, it didn't help that every single commercial I saw was for cheese-dripping, mouth-watering pizza. Thankfully I never gave into those cravings and they do get much, much better and easier to tolerate. I am now almost 6-weeks out and haven't given into temptation one single time, which is nothing short of a miracle for me, so just know it gets easier.

I am a little over 8 months out and still have cravings. They have lessened for sure. They also don't last as long as they used to. Due to addiction issues I plan to stay away from refined carbs and high fat foods from now on. So far so good. It does get better, hang in there. You are off to a great start!

I am two and half yrs out and I still get cravings. pizza is at the top of my list but I am too scared to even try it. I have fairly good restriction and there are still many many things I wish I could have. Wish I could tell you it gets better but for me there are days that are absolutely miserable and all I think about is food! lol :smile2:

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
