Bloating and water retention?

Recommended Posts

I was banded on June 30th so I'm officially only 48 hours out from my surgery. Is it normal to feel so bloated and retaining Water? My tummy is even distended because of it. Has anyone else had this issue and how long should I expect it to last. Or is there anything I can do to help it along? As expected I have some incision pain and back pain but I wasn't really expecting the bloating. I'd appreciate any words of wisdom! Thanks! Chris:blink:

after surgery my tummy was swollen. you need to remember it might actually be from the gas they put in you, Water retention from the iv also. i'm sure your fine but if your worried go ahead and call your drs office and ask them just to be on the safe side. let us know. :tt1:

It's normal.

As mentioned, you are still swollen and possibly full of CO2. You've also got a lot of IV fluids in your system.

I was back to my old self in 4 days.

I used heating pads, helped with the pain and the swelling. I retained a lot of Water for a couple weeks, I found walking, drinking crystal light metabolism tea (green tea/mango??) helped too.

Try not to weigh yourself? They pump you full of so much stuff IVs, CO2 that it takes awhile for your body to get rid of all of it.

Congrats and good luck!!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
