Young, excited, nervous and paranoid

Another new pre-op joins the ranks.

My name is Luke, I'm 21 and 335 pounds with a BMI of something around 54, which I hear is not good . I'm scheduled for my third weight loss visit tomorrow. With my procedure to be scheduled so soon, I'm pretty sure I've never been more nervous about anything in my entire life, but, the more I think about it, I've also never been more excited.

I'm a geeky college student and I live my life with one rule in mind: humor can be found in everything. I like to think that's a good way to live life, since they say laughter is the best medicine, though I'm not sure whoever said that had a license to practice medicine.

I've never had any invasive surgeries, minimally or otherwise, and I haven't been under anesthesia since I was four years old when an eye surgeon decided he was going to try and fix my vision by shooting a LASER into my EYE, which didn't work. Go figure.

I'm paranoid about one thing and one thing only: anesthesia awareness. I've heard about it, and my grandfather had it when he had a knee replacement done. Ever since I was approved for my procedure, it's been right there at the front of my mind whenever I think about getting the surgery, and usually even when I'm not thinking about it. It probably hasn't helped my case any that I've been watching a whole lot of Nip/Tuck over the last few months.

So, who wants to alleviate my fears?

Hi luke,

I was beyond terrified when I started my journey! I struggled for weeks on the pros and cons of surgery. The dangers of me having the surgery were less then if I didnt have the surgery. If I remained as overweight as I was I would have had kidney failure, lymphodema, I was on the verge at some pretty serious health problems. Believe me this surgery is well worth it. I have lost about 170 lbs and have a ways to go. I am excited for what my future holds, and I hope that you feel the same way. I guarentee you will not regret this. Good luck hun!

I'm having my surgery on Monday and I've been thinking the exact same thing about the anesthesia. Maybe I just watch too much tv, but I'm terrified that I'll be under and still feel everything. I've never had anesthesia before. I'm definitely more afraid of it than the operation itself. You are definitely not alone. Just try to think of how many people have procedures every day. I can't imagine it's an epidemic. I was talking to my boss about it, and she told me that the more you have anesthesia, the more likely you are to have problems with it. Since we're first timers, we should be ok. That's what I've been telling myself anyway.

Hi Luke! I was scared about the same thing! I kept thinking I was going to wake up in the middle of everything and be thinking "hello..should I really be awake right now?" Before they even put me to sleep, a nurse anesthetist came in and had an IV medication. She said after she gave me the med, I probably wouldn't remember anything after that...she was right! She gave me the med and I woke up in my room! wasn't even sure they did the surgery yet, but it was done! You'll be fine Luke! Hang in there and keep us updated on your journey!

Luke, if you really knew me you would think i was lying when I talk about all the surgeries i have had since getting my band. I am freaked out too by things like anesthesia awareness but worst of all needles period.

Since my band I have had a few Lipo sessions and a balloon placed in my stomach and not once did I ever wake up during surgery or be aware of what was going on during my surgery.

Having said that every time I go for surgery I always wake up immediately while still on the table of course after everything is finished and it has never been scary ( i was told that my liver or something must be very healthy because i wake up and am alert and can even walk back to my room if I wanted to). When I do wake up it is nice to see the nurses and hear the doctor tell me how things went right away instead of waking up alone in my room with no one to tell me the outcome.

Something like anesthesia awareness can be mentioned to your doctor so they can assure you about your fears.

Good luck on your journey

I'm gonna get my surgery done on july 7th and I'm worried about the same thing because i have never been put under for a sugery before and i'm worried if i have a weird reaction or that i'm gonna wake up on the table. But then i think people have gotten this done lots of times and then i remember my doctors reputation and then i have to remind myself that i'm being silly. And apparently i watch way to much t.v  We just gotta remember that a doctor knows what there doing and if they don't well you can always sue them

Unfortunately I have had a lot of surgeries. But I have never even thought about "anesthetic awareness" before. I've heard of it but never worried when I was put under and don't remember any of them...so I guess that's good. You'll be fine. You really don't remember anything at all. Best wishes on your journey and welcome to LBT.

You'll be surprised. One minute you begin to drift off and what seems like the next minute, you're awake and the surgery is over. Only it's about an hour later. You'll have a little pain, but they can give you something for that. I'm so proud of you to be getting the surgery at 21. I'm 54 and wish I could have had it back then. My life would have been so different. I've always been self-conscious about my weight. Now I'm 3 and a half months out and 42 pounds lighter. - and I'm loving it. Good luck, you'll be fine. - and enjoy life, there is humor in everything.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
