Total loss of appetite! Eating once a day?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I have recently undergone a total transformation regarding appetite and the inborn urge to eat. Before my life revolved around it--each minute was consumed with when I was going to eat again and what it was and how much longer before I do it. I would always have to tell myself, while eating, to slow down, don't eat so much, stop eating now--your definately going to gain weight now with what you ate.

However for the last 3 weeks or so I have come across a phenomena that I am having a hard time understanding. If I skip Breakfast, I rarely get hungry for the rest of the day and usually wind up eating one meal a day at around 4-6 p.m. I know part of this is because I am tighter in the morning and at lunch I have gotten tired of "fighting" with the band in trying to get food down, and I am getting bored with alot of the "soft" fast foods available at the restaurants-having repeated them over and over again. I have also noticed that if I am totally busy with things like work or study that I can go the entire time without thinking about food or eating. I have noticed that if I do eat in the morning that I will get hungry at lunch time and have more hunger at that time also. So far I have been keeping the one meal a day schedule and am hoping that I don't stop loosing because of it. The meal I do eat is a large bandster meal- but alot smaller than pre-banding- for example I splurged 2 days ago and for my only meal for the day I had 4-5 chicken nuggets and 5 potatoe skins with bacon and cheese on top. The 5 skins were actually half skins or half boats--triangle shaped if follow what I am describing. That was it. Last night I had chips and salsa, a refried bean burrito, a cheese enchalada (small tortila with cheese in it-nothing else), and a tostada-again refried Beans with lettuce and sour cream and Tomato on it. Those meals fill me totally up and seem to last me for about 24 hours when I eat again.

Anyways the whole reason for this post is to see if anyone else has experienced dramatic hunger loss (many have) but have also taken up eating less meals in a day?

By the way I have only had 2 fills and about 3 cc of fills.

Thanks,

T

T,

Last week when I got a fill I told my dr I was eating 1.5 pieces of salmon with vegetables for a meal. he was afraid that I would stretch my pouch. I would worry that you are going to stretch yours with the quantity of food you are eating (unless you are drinking with the meal and pushing the food through).

I would try to get some food in earlier, if nothing else try Protein shakes, yogurt, broth, hummus, etc. That will get you away from the fast food and eating better.

Good luck and I hope your weight loss continues. Celeste

These posts alarm me - 5 chicken nuggets and potato skins as your only intake for the day? Where's the fresh food - where are your Vitamins, your Calcium? If you only eat once a day at least make it a healthy meal. Weight loss aside, you're going to become malnourished on that sort of intake.

I cant comment on tight bands in the morning, etc its still a tad over 2 weeks till I get banded. But could you try to get, say, a thin fruit smoothie in in the morning, and some thin vegetable Soup for lunch? Even if you really cant manage solid food at those times?

Someone posted a week or two back on this topic though, about how eating a large meal at night, inflames your stomach, causes over-restriction in the morning and that this pattern becomes a viscious cycle. I wish I knew where it was for you, perhaps the poster will see this.

I understand your thinking on this, since I don't have the constant head hunger any longer and even turn meals down, that I would have never done pre-band. Problem is when you only eat one meal a day your metabolism is slow. THat is why if you eat Breakfast you are hungry by lunch because your metabolism got kicked started for the day. I have to eat at least 3 small somethings a day because at anyone sitting I can't get in that much food, I'm lucky at lunch to get a half of a grilled chicken sammich down. I fought with the foods for a while and figured out I was eating the wrong food (fried)and not taking small enough bites and not chewing to mush. I do this now and don't fight to get my food down as much. I still eat no more than 800 calories a day, but at least I am keeping it spread out to keep my metabolism up. I hope you reconsider this way of eating because not only will it cause malnitrition, you paid a lot of money for this surgery and to not use it to it's potential would be a downer. You have got to work with the band and not battle it. I guess the only reason I say anything is because I got up to my top weight eating one time a day. Now of course that was a super sized big mac meal from McDonalds, but I still managed to get up to 275 eating that once a day. Please don't think we are harping on you we just want you to be healthy and we want you to be sucessful and not miserable with the band. Keep us posted on your progress and let me know if any of this helps.

I do think many of us experience, at least temporarily, a loss of interest in food that can really come as a surprise. But it doesn't mean it's OK not to eat. I sure hope you're taking your Vitamins and getting in enough fluid! And that meal doesn't sound like you're getting enough Protein in, either.

It's wonderful to be focused on other things besides eating for a change; I know how liberating that can be. But remember, this is all about your HEALTH, not just lessening numbers on a scale. And staying healthy means getting sufficient amounts of Protein, Vitamins, and liquid. So do try to space out your calories a little more and get in more variety... (lecture over) :)

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
