Trouble when I initally start eating

Recommended Posts

I had my second fill 1 week ago. I have been tolerating food except at the beginning. When I start to eat I get that stuck feeling. After I eat for a bit it goes away and I am able to eat normally. I take small bites and chew thouroughly. What can I do to make when I start eating smoother?:Dancing_biggrin:

I'm not sure. I have decided that what you are talking about is why we got the lapband. You are just at your second fill and I know exactly what you are talking about. At that time I was still eating things that I should not have like potato chips. Now I am at the sweet spot and I have to really watch what I eat, how I eat it and when I eat it. The amount I can eat has been very limited and so I now make sure that what I'm eating has the most bang for it's buck (yogurt and berries for Breakfast, fish and spinach or greens for lunch, etc). I have to take 30 minutes to eat and chew every bite completely before swallowing. I take little breaks between bites to make sure that I am not too full or that I'm not getting stuck.

If I had not gone thru what you are talking about after the 2nd or 3rd fill, I would have been very unprepared for the care that I have to take now. It is a process and it works great.

When this happens to me, I loosen it up w/ some hot Water before eating. I've heard that mucus can collect in the pouch, and since I'm having tremendous allergies this year, think that's my problem. It helps me to drink about half a cup of hot (coffee hot) water before eating. I know the doctor said not to drink an hour before, so I only do this if I'm feeling super tight.

@karkeeline umm Did you even read the question? Seems you made a generalized assumption based on judgment and not fact. I do not need to justify myself to you. For your information I have been eating properly before I got the band, so thanks for the judgmental, offensive, non contributory advice.:Dancing_biggrin:

Hi:

I had similar issues when I was first banded. There were two issues causing my problem. First, I was waiting too long between meals and would actually be hungry when it was time to eat. Second, I was eating too fast once I got to eat. My problems were only at dinner time. I mentioned it to my surgeon and he said that I was probably waiting too long between lunch and dinner causing the issue. He recommended a nutritious late afternoon snack (like FF yogurt, fruit, veggies, rice cake, a couple of saltines) that would be just enough to tide me over until dinner. In addition to that, I started using a one-minute egg timer to make sure that I waited one full minute between bites. Worked like a charm for me!

Best wishes to you.

Sue

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
