What do I need to get *before* my surgery next week?

Recommended Posts

So my surgery is on June 9th and I'm starting to get really stressed about all the preparation and planning and shopping and all that jazz.

So help me, bandsters! What do I need to have at my home for when I come home from the hospital? What did you wish you had? What did you have that you never needed/used?

HELP! :cursing:

Fill your painkiller prescription and buy Gas-X strips.

That's all. You're not having a baby and this really isn't a life-changing ordeal.

Relax and try not to overthink things. The surgery is really quite boring.

I needed pretty much nothing. Lol . I did fill my prescription before hand, but never needed it. I bought gas-x strips, but they didn't help. I did use extra strength tylenol before I went to bed the first few nights. I didnt really do much but lay around for the first 4-5 days, so maybe some movies!

SF Jello, Sf pudding, clear Broths, and lots of Water and don't forget crystal light. I kept extra pillows by me. Some loose, comphy clothes. Good luck. Let us know how you do!

Bring a small pillow for the car ride home. You can throw it in the car and use it to protect from the seat belt. I also bought lose fitting bras, lose fitting clothes, GasX strips, adult strength liquid Tylenol, Mirilax (for constipation), SF Jello, SF pudding, Soups, juice (low calorie), Popsicles, Protein Shakes, unflavored Protein Powder, Greek yogurt, Cream of Wheat, sippy cups, and I use toddler plates, bowls, etc. to ensure food measurement. Hope this helps! I wish you the best!!! Dottie

Not that all of that sugar free stuff isn't good to have but why burden somebody with a list like that when they can go shopping later for that stuff?

Maybe it's a girl thing, but we need to feel preparred lol. I know it took me awhile before I felt like shopping. The pillow for the ride home, PERFECT advice!:cursing:

I would definitely ( and did) buy all of those items beforehand... I'm 5 days postop today and would not want to have to go shopping!

I don't know if its a girl thing or not, but its certainly a "me" thing. Not only do I need to feel like I need to be prepared, but I'd rather be "burdened" by the list now that have to worry about it while I'm recovering.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I've had two c-sections and a breast reduction before (sorry if its TMI) so I know I can handle this surgery. Its just all getting very "real" all of a sudden. lol

It is definitely a girl thing! I just wanted the short list. That way I would know I had everything on the list.

If you've been through a c-section; lapband surgery won't even make you blink.

My mother whined for 36 years about how much pain I caused her because of her c-section.

I had some Clear Liquids on hand. I pre filled my prescription, but I only took once dose. I would say some things to do to keep you occupied. If you live with someone you can always send them out for what you need.

That's some good advice right there. I'm not banded yet. I'm waiting impatiently to be approved but I really like that advice about the sippy cup and toddler plates and bowls. I'm gonna pick those up this week at Target.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
