Restriction-What is it to you?

Recommended Posts

H All. I just received my 2nd fill yesterday. I have 6cc's in a 10cc band. Since then, liquids are going down slow and its a bit painful. I litterally have to take tiny sips. Also, a new development is when I started on yogurt today, i have this gurgling in my throat with every bite. I have also slimed a bit too.

Is this what restriction is? When things are very slow to go down and the back of my throat is gurgling? Is it supposed to be uncomfortable when swallowing.

Its the weirdest thing. I am terrified to eat anything solid right now. Oh, and taking my Vitamins produced a ton of gurgling as well.

I just dont want to go get an unfil. No pb'ing yet.

That's restriction. The same thing happens to me. You do have to take smaller bites of things and you do have to sip your fluids. You may be taking to big of a spoonfull of yogurt. Try a baby spoon if you are using a regular one. Don't be afraid to try regular foods again. Just cut them very small and chew chew chew at least 20-30 times before your swallow.

Imagine your stomach where the band is as a funnel. That's why the gurgling sound. The food is slowly going down. If you are able to keep most of the food down then it's ok. Keep in mind that the first few days after you get the fill you are a bit swollen. It is also a little painful. I'm on my 5th fill and I am definately at the sweet spot because I am never hungry. I can go at least 5 hours between meals without being hungry. I'm lucky if I can eat 1/2 of food anymore. I do slime once and awhile but that's because I'm still learning to chew the food slower and take smaller bites. Keep in mind that old habits take awhile to break.

If after a few more days you are still having problems then I would suggest calling your doctor. But it does sound like you are at perfect restriction.

If I couldn't guzzle Water, I would go for an unfill but that's me.

I need something to limit my food intake but drinking Water should neither be painful nor a chore.

I had a fill last week and afterwards, I couldn't get yogurt or even a shake down without pain or gurgling for four days. I too didn't want to give up my "restriction" but there's a fine line between restriction and overfill. I ended up going in for a slight unfill and instantly felt better. My doctor told me to never let that feeling linger because overtime that causes issues w/ the band. Also, he mentioned that if you're too tight, you're not getting the proper nutrients you need to lose either. So to me, restrictions means eating comfortably w/o pain and feeling satisfied for about 4 hours or so.

Best,

Lauren

I wouldn't worry for a few days. I am always on liquids for 2 days after fills. If you can't do anything by Friday, thenmaybe you should worry, a little. It took about a week for me to adjust to my 2ndfill, tho'. Karen

To me, you cant feel restriction unless you are either getting full or have done something wrong.

Restriction reminds you that yes, you're satisfied after only a small amount of food or it reminds you forcefully that you're eating too fast or too big a bite or a food that doesnt agree.

It doesnt equal any sort of regular stuck or pbing to me, it doesnt equal strange or uncomfortable sensations with normal eating and it doesnt equal fear of eating in public in case a pb happens.

But there are always niggles. Some people cant eating in the morning, for instance. For me, I absolutely cannot sleep with anything in my pouch - if I eat even a little near bedtime, I can feel fine, but I have this "unease", I can feel it there and the minute I slip into sleep, I tend to wake suddenly with an instinct that I'm about to vomit. I never do, I never get reflux but that feeling is there. As long as I have my evening cuppa an hour before bed and dont eat I'm fine.

Last night I was hungry and had a small handful of cashews, I went to bed and had to get up again and sit up for an hour and a half until they were gone and I could like down!

Yet I can eat bread, I can eat a cup of food at a time, i can eat any food at all and i never pb so you could hardly say I was too tight. Its such a personal thing, restriction.

My doc has said that it takes about 3 days for the swelling to go down after a fill (I am sure this varies person to person). If I ever have restricion which limits my ability to eat and especially drink for more than 3 days, my doc says I am too full and need an unfill. You don't want to get dehydrated!

For me, restriction is feeling full after eating 1/2 c of food and staying full for half of the day. Restriction does not mean I am limited in my ability to drink water; with that said, I don't guzzle or I do get sick.

Good luck!

For me, restriction is when I can eat about a cup of food and feel satisfied for 4-5 hours. You should be able to drink Water freely. There is usually some inflammation a few days after a fill, which might cause some gurgling. But if that feeling of super tightness persists, you might need a slight unfill.

I got my 3rd fill on Tuesday (6 cc in a Realize Band), and it has done nothing for me. I can eat just about as much as I want, but I do try to limit myself. I can eat bread, and I still can take big bites without any troubles. I ate 1 cup of Special K Cereal this morning at 7:40. My stomach was growling at me at 11:00 a.m. Is this ever going to get better or is there something wrong with my band?

I had to go for a slight unfill after my last fill because I felt too tight. I could still drink Water, but it was a real chore. My doctor has us on Clear Liquids for 72 hours after a fill so I don't know what would've happened if I tried yogurt. But, the Water was bad enough... tiny sips, lots of gurgling, and pain if I drank more than just a tiny sip. I'm glad I got a slight unfill. (you can see the details of how much and when in my siggy)

For me, though, the time right after a fill is not always the tightest so it made the decision easy to go back. I knew that if I was this tight right after the fill, I might be even tighter a couple weeks after. I don't know why, but that's how it works for me. Right after I had the slight unfill, I was thinking maybe I made a mistake because I felt wide open again. Now, a week and a half later, I have perfect restriction.

By the way, what I consider 'perfect restriction' is pretty much being able to eat anything* as long as you chew it very well. But, small meals, 3x a day, no hunger between, no need for snacking in between. And, with no problems getting enough solid Protein or water in. I aim for 20g of solid Protein at every meal for 60g+ total per day.

* with the exception of bread which has a problem for me from the very beginning

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
