considering lapband

Recommended Posts

Thank you for the reply. My insurance coverage for the procedure is very limited. Then on top of that the coverage would be less because it would be out- of-network. I am planning to get a letter of medical necessity for my husband and myself. We are both considering the lap band and have attended your seminar. When we get the letter they will be sent to our insurance along with a letter from me. I hope our insurance will consider this surgery more seriously than they obviously do now.

Sugarbear -

My insurance does not cover at Wadley as well as they do with St. Michael's, but they agreed to pay anyway, and Wadley is going to offer the same discount that I would have gotten if I would have been having the surgery done at St. Michael. I had to have a letter of recomendation also. I hope everything works out. I was so excited about the surgery, but now I am getting nervous!! There have been so many people with problems lately, that I am kind of scared. I have two small children, and I need to stay healthy for them. Good Luck!!!

Sugarbear -- I've been banded since 8/31 and have no restriction so far from eating any kind of food (bread, steak, salad, etc). I have given up pop completely though, and severely limit my intake of sugar, bread, etc.

Besides smaller portions, most docs will tell you to avoid bread, Pasta, potatoes, and junk food even if they will go down just fine. None of those are conducive to weight loss. Lean Protein, veggies and fruits are the best choices. Of course, it ultimately comes down to eating fewer calories than what you need. The band won't do all the work -- you'll still be able to eat junk, so you need to be committed to following a healthy eating plan.

Good luck! Hope you get your insurance to pay most/all of this. If not, make sure you have a financial plan for what you are going to do if you are one of the unlucky few who have to have a port or band removal down the road. [plus budget for fills -- they are expensive and the band is worthless without them]. Some docs do them for cheaper/free during the first year after surgery, so don't forget to ask about that.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
