Ouch.....getting stuck

Recommended Posts

I had my 2nd fill last week. Up until then I had not experienced any episodes of food being stuck or sliming.

Wow - today was my first and boy was it a scary feeling. I had to excuse myself and go to the restroom to get sick. I had eaten tilapia before the 2nd fill with no problem.

Decided to just have a Protein shake for dinner tonight to recover. Hoping to not have that feeling again ever.

You will find as you get more and more fills that you will have to take even more time to eat your food. You will have to be more aware of how many times you chew your food before you swallow. And certain foods that you could eat before you won't be able to eat again. It's all a learning process. Yes it's scary and yes it does happen. But it's a learning process. Now that you have experienced it you will be more aware of what you are doing and hopefully it won't happen again. But if it does, you know how to deal with it.

Wait awhile before you try Tilapia again. You might have to cook it a different way next time. Maybe it was too dry or drier then you had it before? You also need to cut very small pieces and chew at least 25-30 times before you swallow. Try eating with a baby spoon. It forces you to take smaller portions.

I use an ice tea spoon when I eat. Not as embarassing as using a baby spoon. I'll keep it in my pocket book to use when i'm out

The first time can be very scary, it is very important to learn from the experience and work out what caused it. Perhaps, too much food per mouthful, swallowed too quickly, did not chew properly, the food type, time of day, emotional state etc.

Using a smaller eating utensil is crucial, take nibbles of bites into food and chew down to a mush and allow 30-60 seconds between mouthfuls.

Good Luck

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
