I'm getting Banded May 6th and I am worried about vomiting!

How often do you vomit w/ the band?

I'm worried I won't know when to stop and I will end up vomiting alot. Then I worry about the band slipping from the vomiting.

I know that when you eat you eat slowly chewing foods up very good; but, can you tell when to stop to keep you from getting sick? Doesn't food kinda expand in your stomach over time before it starts getting broken down?

Its not really vomit, its more like gagging up mucus. If I eat too fast and get the stuck pain, then the mucus starts and then I go and kind of gag up this mucus. I don't think this is the type of vomiting that makes the band slip. I think it is more like if you have food poisoning or a virus and just keep throwing up that creates that problem. Trust me you will know when to stop, the band screams it at you. First you get a subtle warning, and if you don't mind, its like your mom if you came home from the prom at 4am. Not pretty. Don't worry, you will do fine.

You will learn when to stop. I start to feel a slight pain in my chest and I know to stop. Burping usually takes the pain away. I then don't neccesarily feel full, just not hungry. You will find that you do not get the same feeling of fullness that you did preband. I have to admit I miss that feeling.

The vomiting is not like usual vomiting. It's simply the food (or some of it) coming right back up. Nothing to really worry about. Again, you will learn when to stop.

Hi Quinny, I just got banded April 22 (I'm on day 3) and my concern was similar to yours--except I was REALLY worried specifically about vomiting after the surgery. Three years ago I had hernia surgery and spent about 12 hours puking my guts out after I got home from the surgery center. Never in my life had I felt so very, very sick! So, I was super worried about the lapband surgery. I still wanted 1-day surgery but I was worried.

The thing I found out from one of the nurses was that on an empty stomach, the pain med they give you after surgery can cause...vomiting! Because of my concerns, they put all kinds of anti-nausea medicine into the IV, dr. gave me anti-nausea suppository prescription, and I went home. I did have some nausea and a little bit of heaving (sorry, I know it's gross) but took 1/2 doses of pain med then switched pretty early to Tylenol. By the next morning I felt much better.

I haven't had any nausea or vomiting at all since that first day. Good luck!

Nancy

I worried about the same thing. I was banded in February and have not yet vomited. I have been a little stuck a few times but luckily it worked its way down. You will know when to stop, your body will signal you.

Hey.

I was banded on 4/22 and you dont have to worry about vomiting right away. Your DR will give you lots meds to clam your stomach down. Also keep in mind, when you get banded your band will not be closed or filled for a few weeks. You need time to heal before you begin on solid food.< /p>

I was banded Feb. 8, 2010, and I have not vomited once due to eating. I had trouble using the restroom a few weeks after surgery that made me vomit, but nothing really related to the band. I had my second fill (5 cc in my band now), and I can still eat like a horse. I don't have any problems eating anything right now so no vomiting issues. Don't worry. It is not as bad as you think .

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
