Conflicting information

Hi I am new to this forum. I was just banded on Nov 1st. I have received some conflicting info and now I hope I haven't hurt the pouch. I was given a lap-banded booklet before surgery for post op diet which I was prepared for the 2 weeks clear Fluid but when I checked out of the hospital they said Clear Liquids for only 2 days and then soft food. I called the doctors office before this 2 day period was over and talked to a nurse and she said that I could start soft foods after 2 days. Well then I went for my 1 week post op appt and the doctor (not the same doctor that did my surgery) said I should have been on clear liquids for another week but since I had started soft foods to stay on them for another 7 to 10 days. Am I doing any harm to the pouch or the healing process because a cup of food does not fill me up but I am trying to eat in extreme moderation. Any advice?

Don't you hate that when it happens? You're trying to follow orders but which orders are you too follow!? I think you should point this out to your surgeon, when you meet with him. I would go with what the last surgeon told you, but know that things may change when you meet w/your surgeon. Either way, soft foods won't hurt the band.

My surgeon told me, "What ever you might be told by a nutritionist, nurse, etc., I am the last word. Go by my directions." That pretty much sums it up. At the beginning I was told I could eat certain food items by the nutritionist, however he had his own ideas.

I had 2 weeks of liquids, anything that would go through a straw, then 2 weeks of mushy and onto the real food. Sounds like the nutritionst is writing her own book. Just don't overdo it at this point. You were suppose to be healing. Hopefully all is well.

The doc's info and the hospital's info was the same for me 2 weeks clear after surgery... darn :)

If your doc says your okay then your okay. Don't worry, just go slow.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
