How soon can I have a glass of wine?

Recommended Posts

I really want a glass of wine. Not the whole bottle, just one glass. My husband and I typically go out to eat and/or meet with friends 2 or 3 times a week. I am tired of sitting there with a glass of Water. I could nurse a glass of Chardonnay or Merlot for at least an hour! I can understand the no beer thing, and also understand alcohol having empty calories. From the healing band standpoint wouldnt the wine just go straight through to my stomach?

The only information I can find in my info packet is:

"You must also avoid alcoholic drinks, not only are they very caloric but they irritate your stomach. In time you might be able to drink a glass of wine, but it should be done sparingly and with moderation"

How much time is 'in time' lol?

My info pack (can't remember the exact words and too lazy to search for it lol) acknowledges the empty/liquid calorie issue, but says it may help in social situations which some overweight people may have withdrawn from. Also acknowledges the research that moderate red wine may have health benefits. I like that bit :)

My doctors information said moderation - but that moderate wine consumption (as opposed to beer, spirits) has health benefits, something that's reasonably well known these days. And red wine is full of antioxidants!

Normally, just out of surgery, or just pregnant, or unwell, any time when you really shouldnt drink alcohol you probably cant face the thought of it anyway. I figure by the time it seems attractive to you again, you're probably right to handle a small amount (well maybe not if you're pregnant!).

I have a glass of red wine about 3 nights a week. I waited until I was 6 weeks out from surgery.

I waited about 3 weeks but regularly (3 times a wk) have between 2-4oz. Just seems to be all I want. However, last night I tryed a sip (and I mean a small sip) of Grand Marnier. Which is undoubtedly the worst thing I've tryed in my 3 months banded. It will not pass my lips again, it burned my stomach like it was on fire and I almost vomited immediately (which would have made it burn going back up). So only a little wine for me from now on.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
