Hello everyone...I've been banded for just over a year. A few days ago, I got a root canal. They put me on penicillin and vicodan. These pills are HUGE, so I've been breaking them in half.

I'm noticing, though, that it's becoming harder and harder for me to eat. I keep throwing up. I had a few cherry tomatoes and 2 small pieces of pineapple, and I threw it all up. Is it because of the medicine, maybe? Or maybe because I've been eating while laying down? Should I call my doctor? I'm not in pain...my band doesn't hurt.

Thanks. :bored:

I'm sure you know that if there is something unusual that you are concerned about, you should never be afraid to call your doctor, so please call your doctor. Eating while laying down can cause problems, which it sounds like you already know. Also you may be irritated and may need to try liquids or soft foods for a day or 2, or the meds could be causing a problem. Still, I would call your doctor. Let us know how you're doing.

I havent needed antibiotics since I was banded 4 years ago, but I do dread the inevitable. Many antibiotics make me violently nauseous and cause vomiting.

You have multiple things that could be not helping the situation.

Antibioitcs and vicodin can both cause stomach upset.

Eating while lying down causes me all sorts of stuck problems.

Finally, I can't eat cherry or grape tomatoes, it is just too much skin for me to chew thoroughly.

Put all that together and it is one big whammy!

As another poster said, don't hesitate to call your doctor, that is what we pay them for.

As a side note, I take vicodin for arthritis pain. Yes, the pills are big, but I do better to take the whole pill than to break it in half. It seems to me like the edges of the halfs make them stick more than the larger whole pill.

Hope you are feeling better soon!

also.. fruits are prone to have more acid and dont settle well with narcodics try some protien and grains before taking the vicodan... just make sure to take them on a full stomach..

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
