What Real Food Can I Eat & How Soon???

Recommended Posts

Hey Folks,

My name is Sal, and I'm from Central Pennsylvania. I was just banded on Monday, March 8th, so I'm 5 days post op. I never got to see my surgeon at discharge, so I'm not sure what fill amount we started with. I've been taking liquids without issue - it hurt to swallow at first (most likely from being intubated), but I'm good now. The majority of my gas pains subsided on Thursday (Day 3) - the same day I stopped the Isopure and moved to full liquids - again, without issue. I did alot of research on the net and came back with a wide array of what can be considered a 'full' liquid. Everything from mashed potatoes to Protein Shakes came up. I've since ingested Protein shakes, soft scrambled eggs, liquified lentil Soup, and today, I broke down and ate the inside of a spiced apple donut (we had a dozen donuts here for company whom have been in and out all week to see me). Understand, I NEVER eat donuts. I am a huge Dunkin' Donut fan, and I always get coffee and a healthy, flatbread eggwhite sandwich for Breakfast. Not to get off on a tangent here - I ate the inside of the donut, with an 8oz glass of milk shortly after it, and other than a little tightness at the stoma, I had no issues. My point is - I have it in my head that I'm not supposed to eat ANY solids yet, but being that I am really craving solids, had I known what to opt for, I would have probably stayed away from the donut. tuna fish, over-cooked Pasta, wonton soup, beef barbecue??? I meet with my Surgeon on the 16th, but I want to take a bit of something solid yesterday :wink2: Any thoughts or support would be greatly appreciated.

I know how you feel, I will be two weeks post op on this coming Tuesday. I went through the I want some solids phase for a few days I was on full liquids for only 4 days. I had cream of Broc. soup. and a lot of other heart healthy fatt free Soups. as I transitioned over to soft solids, I was able to eat blanched, then steamed broccolli till it was almost mush but had a solid texture to it. I was also able to eat some canned tuna, I used chunk ligh in Water solid white might be a little tougher to chew small enough just yet. I did have my first "stuck" episode today but I wasnt stuck for long.

Sal- I STRONGLY recommend that you stick to full liquids for as long as your doctor tells you to.

It's not about what will-or-won't go down... it's about letting your stomach heal. It can't heal if it has to work. It's swollen and needs to rest.

I also couldn't wait to get through with the liquid stage-- a warm scrambled egg never tasted so good. But I still can't have any real solids-- I have to blend everything up to the consistency of apple sauce for the next two weeks. Then real solids.

If you move forward too fast, you may cause a problem.

My doctor's office said that it is only liquid if you can drink it through a straw-- tuna fish, mashed potatoes don't count there. (In my 2nd stage, I still have to blend up my tuna fish.)

I know it sucks-- I did get some chewing gum in my second week. It may cause some gas, but it wasn't a problem for me (I was just a little burpy-- very ladylike! :wink2:

I'm sure you can suck it up for a little while! (not trying to be mean, or anything... just heal well.)

Edited to add: I would call your doctor's office and ask exactly how long they want you to stay on liquids. Maybe they only want 1 week and you could move on to mushies/blended foods. (You can blend any solids-- I had blended turkey meatloaf for dinner.)

Hey, Sal. I'm from central PA, too, Harrisburg specifically.

I know you know the answer to your question, but all the foods you mention are mushies, not full liquids. I'm glad you're doing fine after eating the inside of a donut, but it is dangerous to push your luck 5 days post-op. If you really want something else to eat, I call the doctor's office and ask them. Sometimes, they let patients move a little faster on the diet recommendations. One of the first things I ate was a soft boiled egg. It wasn't exactly solid food, but it was delicious after a week of Protein drinks, Jello and broth.

The good news is that this period goes quick. You'll be on to real food in no time!

Who did your surgery Cindy? I went with Dr. Prashar at the Weight Loss Clinic in Harrisburg.

I also had my surgery on 3/8/10...So I know what you mean...I have been sticking to Protein shakes and will occasionally splurge and eat some Tomato Soup or even some Potato Soup that I have put in a blender...both do an excellent job of filling me up...I'm not even sure how you managed to drink an 8oz glass of milk as a matter of fact...I guess we all react differently to the surgery...i haven't been able to get down more than 2-3 oz of any liquid (even water) until today. Today was the first day I was able to get in about 5-6 oz of soup for dinner...and I'm STUFFED... :wink2:

Just keep pluggin away at it...

I'm at the Weight Loss Clinic, too. Dr. Davidson was my surgeon. They have worked out really well for me. They're close to my house and they always fit me in when I need an appointment. Dr. Weiger is good with fills. I've never had a problem.

This sounds exactly like me. I too was banded on the 8th. I get full very quickly but I feel like I am always putting something in my mouth. Soft of course, but I have not had the stuck issue. I am a little nervous because I thought that would be a big deterrent for me not to want certain things. I too have eaten things not "exactly" on the pureed list.

I know that I did not have a fill at all on the 8th so I am hoping the fill will make the world of difference.

Hang in there maybe we can keep up and see if out experiences are similar.

There are lots of different sets of guidance that I've seen post-op, so it seems that each surgeon is different. For me, I was restricted to Clear Liquids only for 7 days post, then full liquids for 3...tomorrow, I start my second of two weeks on purees...on the 22nd, I'll start softs, moving into more solid food...my first adjustment is scheduled for the 31st. I had been told during my preop studies that, for my surgeon, from Clear Liquids to solids takes about 6 weeks total.

That seems like a long time, but I know that the progression is moved slowly so that all of the healing can take place appropriately. For me, having had a hiatal hernia repaired at the same time, I'm glad for the extra "rest" in that area.

Keep in mind that, when you start having fills, you will be advised to regress in your food types for a few days after each one...you need to be prepared for that. Advancing your diet too far, too fast at any stage is just setting yourself up for problems.

The advice my nutritionist told me is "Just because you THINK you can eat it, doesn't mean you SHOULD!". I think those are pretty good words to the wise.

Hang in there!

V/R, Christine

Hi. I just banded 3-5-2010. I lasted on the liquid diet for the first 5 days. I pretty much didn't eat anything. Then I started eating regular food, but staying away from meat or bread. I really hard. I figure I won't have real progress until after I get my first fill.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
