I had my surgery today and not have too bad of pain. My main problem is nausea and dry mouth. My doctor told me clear liquid for 5 day but not an amount or how often. Any suggestions? How long should it take me to drink a cup of Water?

Thanks,

Larae

Congrats!!! :)

I'm 6 days post op. My doctor didn't give me amounts either, but I have been (trying to at least!) doing the 1 ounce of liquid (Water Isopure or Powerade Zero) every 15 minutes. In the morning I have about a cup of SF Jello, for lunch a cup of broth and for dinner either more broth or more Jello. Tomorrow I start my full liquids, my plan is to have a yogurt for Breakfast a Protein shake for lunch and probably a cup of broth for dinner :-)

I hope that helps!! :w00t:

Congrats larae and your lack of pain is very comforting to those of us having surgery tomorrow. At this point, pain is my only concern.

Thanks!!

Congrats to all of you! I was told to sip about an ounce every 10-15 mins for the first few days. After that it was as big or as often as i could tolerate. Hope that helps

Brian-Pain really wasn't a big deal for me--even the dreaded gas pain we read so much about! The first few days per dr's orders I took my pain meds every 4 hours whether it felt like I needed or not. After day 3--I really didn't take them much at all. I would say it was "uncomfortable" more than painful. I am also a belly sleeper and was sleeping on my stomach within the first week! Of course I am lucky and only have 2 very tiny incisions though! Good Luck tomorrow!!!!! :w00t:

Update from today. I ended up having to take some pain meds. My daughter (18months) elbowed me on one of my incisions. I waited awhile and was extremely sore so I did break down and take some pain meds. I am tender but this has been easier than I thought. My husband made steaks and mushrooms, baked potatoes and salad for him and the kids..... I had to leave the room until they were done lol! Good luck tomorrow!!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
