Afraid to eat - Day 7 post-op

Recommended Posts

Full liquids are allowed - thinned down pudding, thinned down Soup, thinned down mashed potatoes. Even tho I'd like to try them, I'm chosing yogurt, applesauce and thin tomatoe Soup. Afraid to try to open up the throat and swallow.

Anyone else feeling this fear?

Any suggestions from old-timers?

Fear of getting stuck and/or vomiting.

Oh don't be scared. Take small bites, eat slowly and you will be fine! I didn't have my first sliming or "stuck" episode until my 4th fill and 4 months after my surgery.

Just take a small bite or two, then wait a couple minutes. If all feels ok, take another tiny bite.

Cream of wheat thinned down with milk really helped me.

Also oatmeal with milk.

I very much understand your fear. I was a little skittish at first, too. But really, if you can tolerate yogurt and applesauce, you'll be a-okay with the other foods you've listed.

Take it slow, and --most of all---relax. (I don't mean that snarkily; I'm referring to physically relaxing, not implying you're too tightly-wound!) Your body will handle it just fine.

The fear really will dissipate once you get just a little bit of experience with the band.

I think one of the "best" things to happen to me was a stuck incident a few days after banding. It wasn't food-related--it was a pill. It taught me that even, worst-case scenario, things work out okay. A few minutes of pressure, some deep breaths, a little spitting of saliva, and the "clog" moved through, and my stomach gurgled empty like a just-unclogged sink (complete with sound effects).

Worst-case scenario, you will be fine, too.

But there's no reason to expect the worst, given the success you've had so far. It's safe to advance your diet--there's nothing in it that will stick.

Good luck!

Betsy, Thank you for describing "the worse" which wasn't that bad. Yes, I could handle that and I must take my meds.

And you observation (legitimate) that I'm NOT relaxing. I'm obsessing and worrying about something that has NOT happened. Relax, breathe, slow down...... Great advice and direction.

Thank you so much.

I know the feeling. Im on day 6 today and am eating my first yogurt. I have a 4 ounce cup thats probably going to be on my desk all day. Trying to figure out what the full feeling is. Still sore from surgery so cant really tell what is pain and what is full. I just started Protein Shakes yesterday. Havent really been hungry but do have an empty stomach sensation. When will my stomach feel normal?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
