Pre op no carb help pls!!!

Recommended Posts

I'm on my pre op diet and I'm not on just liquids, my diet allows anything except carbs, real sugar, salt, fruit or carbonation. I can have only skim milk in the dairy dept. Can anyone suggest a snack that will fit into this? I like crunchy- someone suggested Pork rinds because they have no carbs. The no carb thing is an effort to shrink the liver to make the surgery easier for the dr. Any suggestion would be appreciated! Thanks!! Only 6 days till surgery! Yay!!

They have Protein chips at whole foods markets. I have not tried them though. My pre-op diet was like yours.

Atkins..... no carbs......it seemed much easier than the liquid pre-ops. Beef Jerky, as much meat as you want.

Crunchy-raw veggies, celery, cauliflower, peapods, etc? You won't get to eat them for a while post op so enjoy!

When you say "no carbs," what does this mean, exactly? If you're allowed veggies and milk, then some carbs are allowed--did your doctor give you a max number of grams you can eat per day? Knowing that can be really helpful when you're planning!

(Or, did s/he just mean none of the white, processed, refined stuff? If so, then the possibilities become even more limitless!)

Off the top of my head, non-carby snack-y type stuff includes stuff like cheese (I like Babybel and Laughing Cow--easy to grab for a snack), nonfat cottage cheese (yes, dairy--but not carby), edamame (these do contain some carb--so knowing your limit is good), Jerky, etc.

Bariatric Eating has a pretty good selection of Protein foods in their online store---it might be worth checking. (There are other sites that offer similar, too.)

I wasn't specified a certain number of grams so basicly it's like you said- stay set from the white stuff- breads, patsa etc I used some of the advice you guys gave me on a quick shopping trip last night, so thank you all for the advice. It's weird because last week i was sure that I wouldn't be able to make it on my preop diet! I think I t was just a shock to mind more than anything. It's really not that bad. Plus I have lost 6 lbs pre op so that makes me feel more motivated to pass up the less healthy foods and spring for the ones that are better for me. It's been tough to do so but I can make it! My surgery is this coming Friday so...,, not that much longer of real food for a while! Thanks again for all the great advice and tips, I assure you I ask becuse I truly want to hear candid answers so I appreciate it very much!

I think this type of pre-op diet is easier than the all liquid ones, at least it was for me. I think I would have gone nuts on all liquids pre-band. It is very effective in shrinking the liver so it can be retracted out of the way during the band surgery and you drop some pounds as a bonus! Don't let yourself go hungry. Remember on this type of diet you can have unlimited amounts of meat. If you stay with lean meats, the weightloss will be more.

Good luck with the surgery on Friday! See you on the other side!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
