Question for Runners

Recommended Posts

Good Morning!!

I woke up early this morning and did my first work out for the couch - 5K training program. I wanted to die but once i completed the workout, I felt great. The question i have is why does it feel like i have a sore throat and something is stuck in my checks. It hurts a little to breath in and i have to cough.

I am sure its because i am out of shape, but i wanted to see why I felt that way and what can i do to prevent this from happening again. Maybe i am not breathing right?

thankk you in advance!

Stacy

You've probably brought on a bit of exercise induced asthma and irritated your airways.

I also find any sudden increase in exercise, even now, when I'm very fit, and I will, almost without exception, come down with a bad head cold, sore throat etc.

When I started doing bootcamp back in October, i knew this would happen. So two weeks before, i did three very hard interval runs in a week of six runs. Really hard ones. Sure enough, I had a bad cold the next week, but I got it over and done with BEFORE i started the boot camp sessions which I pay good money for and didnt want to miss!

Thanks Jacqui!

that makes sense - it really does feel like an asthma attach for like 20 min. I guess I just have to get over it and i will be fine.

thanks!!

I think I had the same when I started C25K in November. I watched a lot of "how to" running videos, including how to breathe.

Are you running outside? Could be the cold, also. I had trouble in the bitter cold running/breathing.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
