Finally went to the ER!!!!

Recommended Posts

I was banded and had a hiatal hernia repair on 2/11/10. I had been feeling horrible, I could not hold down and Fluid and was throwing up everything I ate. I had not had any fluid in about 2 days so I finally went to the ER. I had a upper GI done and it showed that only a very tiny amount of fluid was passing through the band, the rest was staying my esophagus and that is why it would come back up. Wait until you hear this..........The doctor finally figured out that there was an error when placing the band and someone left 2cc's of fluid inside the band, so with the 2cc restriction and the stomach swelling fluid was not able to pass throught the band. The doctor pulled out 2cc's of fluid and immediatly I was able to keep down a glass of Water, I feel so much better. I really thought I had made a big mistake the last couple of days. The doctor said that when placing the band they are suppose to make sure that they remove all fluid before placing, someone did not do their job, I don't know if it was the doctor, or if it was one of his techs.

Oh my goodness. Good call on your part to get to the doc. Glad it was something they could fix.

So sorry to hear about your issue. I had 3.5 cc in my band at surgery and haven't had any problems. I didn't find out I had that until I went for my first adjustment last week. I got 1.5 added so now I am at 5.

I wonder how they determine how much to put initially? Obviously, it didn't work for you, but seemed just right for me.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
