Feeling my port freaks me out a little...

Recommended Posts

Hi Everybody,

I can totally feel my port. It's right under my skin! Is this where they are supposed to be positioned? I am so aware of it I always feel like I have to hold my stomach in tight or it might pop through! LOL! Of course it won't really do that but it's just weird feeling. I also don't like to lie on my right side to long..feels strange. Anyone else worried about this?:(

I had my surgery November 27 and have had 1 fill with still no restriction.

I'm not worried about it but I do feel it. At first, I didn't like running my hand over it, but now I do it all the time. You get used to it.

I haven't had a fill yet, so can't really tell you about restriction. I'm entering Bandster Hell myself.

I had my surgery 11/3/09 and I can still feel my port, although considerably less than even a month ago.

The number of fills you have won't determine restriction. It's the amount of fill. My doctor put 3 ccs in on my first fill and 3cc's on my second fill. I have 7.5 cc's now and at least temporary restriction.

Some doctors only put .5 cc in at a time and make their patients wait months between each of these tiny fills. At that rate, restriction is probably a year away. :(

Thats a good ? My port is so deep I can hardly feel it unless I push real hard and the doc has a little trouble almost every time he does a fill. The last time he filled me he poked me 3 times.I wish he would have put mine closer to ther skin. I was wondering if mine moved or something. Is it normal to be too deep as well?

I'm around 9 months out and my port is now very close to my skin. It doesn't stick out, but it is really hard. It doesn't bother me except right now I have some port pain (I know why) and so it's a little tender in that area. Otherwise, be lucky your doc's office doesn't have to root around and try to find it for a fill.

Thanks for your replies. I don't think there is one place or another that is better or worse for the port to be...we're all different and where the Dr. puts the port is individual I'm sure.

Why do you think some Dr.'s put in so little at fill time? Money for more visits I suppose?? I wonder if I could request more cc's next time? What do you thnk?

I can feel mine with no problems, though the PA had a little trouble on last fill. My 7 year old niece, who lives with me, checks my port a few times a week. She pushes it and then yells, "EWWWW" when she feels it!. She also tells me my belly button smells! She's my little brat! LOL

Honestly for some unethical doc's - that may be the reason. I like to think it has more to do with the fact that some people are very sensitive to fills, myself included. It seems like I have a bit of swelling every time I get a fill, or it may take 3 weeks out to get my restriction. Either way, my doc is 75 miles away, so I don't like to be traveling down there for an unfill if I don't have to. Better to be safe than sorry when getting fills. There are too many problems that can surface when you are overfilled.

The ports are achored to abdominal muscles. So how close they are under the skin depends a lot on how much fat we have there.

My surgeon gives more cc's in early fills and goes down in amount as we progress. He prefers to sneak up on the sweet spot rather than shooting through it and chasing it.

Of course, I ended up overfilled anyway. Which was no fun. But had he put even more fill in, it would have been more painful than it was!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
