living with the lap band
Kimberly Henson Edwards replied to browneyedgoddes's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello, My name is Kim need to update my signature I'm over 3 months post op. Like you for the first several days I felt winded. It is a normal occurance with being put to sleep. When you are put to sleep the machine breathes for you and your lungs don't expand like normal so for awhile you will get short of breath. Practice pursed lip breathing breath in your nose for 5 seconds, hold 5 seconds, then crunch your lips together and push the air out of your mouth for 5 seconds. Do that over and over 4-5 times a day for a week you will feel better. I was nauseated after my surgery for a few weeks, I did feel full at first with just drinking water. As time passes you will not feel as full. You seem to be doing fine. Gas is expected and walking, lots of walking is the only cure I found to help. I also got fed up of clear liquids and went to full liquids a little bit ahead of schedule. I was eating pudding by the 4th day and making yogurt smoothies, my tummy didn't like all the protein shakes I would throw them up! -
Too tight or just need to learn to eat again???
Maybeme replied to sp70's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Same problem here,, had my second fill on Wednesday, and now protein shakes give me that gurgling feeling, and have only been able to eat pudding and yogurt without getting discomfort.....only have 4cc in band, maybe band still irritated from Mondays fill? I have no idea -
"Shaking" things up with those protein shakes ...
sharcorb replied to corgiqueen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use Isopures protein, and like to add a yogurt to it. It creams it up (I mix w/ water) and adds an interesting flavor combination. Lately been using Activia, and that's been a life saver - if you know what I mean . -
Is anyone eating 60-70g of SOLID protein AND meeting other requirements?
Band_Groupie replied to Band_Groupie's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
OK, glad to see others are working this out. I've got some new ideas of things I didn't think of; have been doing the greek yogurt, but hadn't thought about it as a sauce! ...and I'm going to have to look up canellini Beans (what are they?)...but I've been looking for different beans to add. Bought some chick peas/edamame...anyone have a hummus recipe that's not spicy? I just started adding 3T of soy Protein to my morning oatmeal 1/2 sv. It's now more protein than oatmeal...blech! I need another trip to GNC- good powder additions to solids, thanks! Lots of good ideas here...keep 'em coming! I've been reading the 'what I ate today' thread for awhile and it was just depressing me and wasn't helping with my needs, thanks so much all (SweetZ- doc says if you wanted to go on a Liquid Protein diet you should have done that and not gotten the band LOL....defeats the purpose of the band. Yeah, my sis lost a lot of wt. on a liquid protein diet...gained it back...doesn't teach you how to live.) -
Is anyone eating 60-70g of SOLID protein AND meeting other requirements?
SweetZ replied to Band_Groupie's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Its hard... really hard. Especially with the limited amount of food you can eat. Because of my weight I was told to get 84 grams a day, 64 at bare minimum. I try and do it with solid food and if I haven't gotten in half by lunch then I turn to supplements. And by solid I mean non-supplements. I know a really good source is dairy and soy so I try to make sure thats what my Snacks consist of to fit in more Protein. Here's an example of a really good day I had this week. Breakfast (16g) 2 oz turkey sausage-8 1 egg-6 Decaf with cream- 2 snack(7) Gensoy Soy Crisps- (7) lunch (25) veggie lasagna- 15 Over the moon skim milk- 10 snack (4) Sargento cheese stick- 4 dinner (24.5) Morning Star "chicken Nuggets"-15 yogurt-7 granola-2.5 Total- 76.5g -
I'm 3 days post op now. Discharged yesterday and I'm home. I'm focused on staying hydrated and keeping the water moving. I'm on full liquids for the next two weeks and I'm not even blinking at it. I have NO HUNGER at all. It's a bit shocking. To not be hungry. No cravings.... My mom stopped by a burger joint on my way home to get my boys some lunch and I didn't even salivate at the smells of french fries and bacon burgers! It phased me not one bit. (My mom was hesitant about stopping to get burgers because of my condition, but I told her to let the boys be boys for now. They eat pretty well most of the time). I tried plain yogurt and it didn't go down well at all. I used to love yogurt with a little bit of lemon juice. I've been able to tolerate creamy of chicken soup pretty well. I tried chicken broth with a little bit of spice and it did not go down well. Vegetable broth is a winner! I'm pretty sure I will not be able to do spice for a while. I thought I'd be really leaning on the sugar-free popsicles, but I find them a bit too sweet. I"m going to try SF jello today. Right now it's all about the crystal light and water. A sip every 15 minutes! I do not want to get dehydrated and that's my biggest obstacle for now. I'm also doing deep breathing exercises every two hours to ensure I don't develop pneumonia. That's a challenge, but I'm staying on course. I also have a little machine to work on my legs. It does compressions on my calfs when I'm idle to prevent blood clots. I also have a 10 day regimen of blood thinners in the form of shots in my tummy. It seems like a lot, but my doctor is very thorough and I truly LOVE the office for that. I feel well taken care of. I'm staying away from the scales until my follow-up. Initial consult weigh was 339 lbs, Day of surgery I registered 325 lbs. At discharge I was 326 lbs (mainly due all the water they were pumping into me). My follow-up is next Thursday. So we'll see where I land. Taking it day by day.... GOALS: WALK WALK WALK. DRINK DRINK DRINK.

Good Bye...
PatientEleventyBillion replied to shan0520's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Barring my taste buds changing to dislike them there is no way in hell I am parting with foods I can't get in Canada that I used to have back in the states: - Round Table Pizza (California and a few other states) - In N Out Burger (California and a few other states) - Jamba Juice (numerous states) - Premier Pizza (San Jose area, California) - Tacos El Grullense (Bay Area, California) - Wienerschnitzel (California and a few other states) - Jack in the Box (numerous states) - Hormel Chili (No Beans, Turkey No Beans) - Armour Chili - Yoplait Yogurt (different than the Yoplait in Canada) - It's It Ice Cream Sandwiches - Japaleno Cheddar Dip (Fritos?) and Fritos Scoops Things I have ditched due to taste buds changing during weight management program: - Pizza Rolls - Hot Pockets - 99% of chips and other related snacks - Soda (I will miss you soda, but you taste like crap now and you helped eff up my liver ) - Any and all alcohol (didn't drink much anyways, but if and only if my liver completely resolves the fibrosis issue will I ever touch alcohol again, pretty sad since I've never had an alcohol problem to begin with) The difference is with the foods I will still eat, is that 1) I almost never have them as my trips back to the US lately have been few and far between (only a few times a year), 2) I will maintain the tiny portions and caloric/carb restrictions, meaning for things like the Super Burrito from El Grullense.. I might be paying 5 bucks, eat a few bites, save more for later, or if wife/daughter don't want it, throw it away. Still plan on stocking up on the chili (Hormel/Armour) from US trips for days like Super Bowl Sunday.. one of my fav SB dips are Fritos Scoops with Jalapeno Cheddar dip and chili. Of course, my portion size will be minuscule compared to everyone else's, but don't care. -
protein powder in sugar free jello?
S@ssen@ch replied to loridee11's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did it. It was a little "different", but not unpalatable by any means. 1 word of caution: many protein powders may curdle at high temperatures. Make sure your jello is cool enough for your protein powder before adding it. I agree with the others. Protein powders do better when mixed with dairy like milk, yogurt, puddings. BUT, if you're trying to achieve a protein supplement for your clear liquids phase, protein jello works: Here's a recipe (substitute SF jello): https://unjury.com/recipes/jell-o-high-protein-high-calorie/ -
How many carbohydrates a day to be considered "low-carb"?
Erin Marie replied to melmarlem's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
If I want to stay in the 15-20 carb range, I'm screwed. My 12 ounces of daily required milk is 17g. My yogurt had a lot of carbs too. And here I thought I was doing pretty good in the 50-75 range . -
I am 3 weeks post op. Just got into my pureed foods stage. I just tried grits tonight but they felt like they were sitting in my esophagus for a long time. I thought for a minute that I might have to get sick. Ugh! Not a good feeling. I have had good success with baby oatmeal (not regular oatmeal), mashed potatoes, greek yogurt (without fruit chunks), fat free pudding, scrambled eggs. I also put parmesan cheese on my mashed potatoes and eggs for extra protein. I tried some peanut butter but it also made me sick with lots of heartburn. I'm still relying heavily on the protein shakes. Good luck to you!

I would say 1 yogurt, some refried beans and 1/4 c cottage cheese. It was difficult to eat still.

My saving grace has been TEA. I know they say herbal to avoid dehydration from caffeine, but I do both. I drik lots and lots of hot tea w/ Splend & if not herbal fat free half and half. It helps me when i am hungry and it's not time to eat yet...keeps my mouth and stomach occupied, and my mind. I was horrible and started soft foods really early, but things like sugar free Jello, smooth yogurts (which were actuall yon my liquid diet), tomato Soup & chicken broth...light veggie/fruit juice (I found one by V8 that was really good)...sugar free popcicles...nonfat milk. For my soft diet I've been enjoying the liquid egg product that is made of egg whites. I make scrambles out of them and they are only 30 cal for 1/4 cup instead of 70-90 per entire egg, no cholesterol, etc. I mix in chopped onion, a serving of thin sliced deli ham chopped up, and a handful of fresh baby spinach till it's cooked down & tender. I've discovered greek yogurt which is way higher in Protein that regular yogurt and eat it with a bit of granola mixed in (let it sit for a few hours to get soggy?) I like the Chobani yogurt brand. The nonfat is even good, but I also do some 2%. also if pudding is on your liquid diet (it was mine) the sugar free ones aren't too shabby. But above all, hot tea has been of huge comfort to me. Mentally & physically.

Post Surgery Foods You Can't Tolerate But Wish You Could
Cutwater replied to Cutwater's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm still on a pretty heavy Protein kick. I "front load" a lot of my protein early in the day with Greek yogurt (and a scoop of high quality protein) and either a Protein shake or Quest Protein Bar. I haven't found a ready made protein shake I can tolerate, so I mix my own with unsweetened almond milk. The one food group I'm enjoying more of is fresh fruit, but it has to be cold and I keep the portion size very reasonable. -

barbarrito I was banded on 20 Aug 08 too. I lost quickly initially and was "over filled" in Dec. He took some out and I went through Jan - Mar eating all soft foods and not losing anything---bouncing up and down about 4-6 lbs. I finally went back and he said that I was still too full and took some out. The in early May I went back because I was eating too much and gaining. He gave me a fill and right now I am still eating alot at each sitting and not losing but don't feel hungry either. So am a little confused with hte volume----espcially if I look at the "what did you eat today" site. Anyway, my total weight loss is about 50 lbs, basically the same since Dec and I am not a real happy camper. My goal for my 1 yr bandiversary is another 18 lbs and I am hoping to get there. I do work out but probably not as much as I should. But the real thing is that: 1) I am wearing smaller clothes; 2) my bloodwork is much better than a year ago; and I can at least workout now without my knees hurting. I consider those all "wins". However, I am not seeing the improvements physically. People tell me that I look great but I still see all the multiple chins, the chubby cheeks, the large arms, tight watch/rings, etc. I "see" no difference. With the stress that you are under I think that you are doing great! Think about where you'd be if you hadn't had the surgery...something is helping you not over eat and to be able to exercise. Just double check what you are eating and make sure that it is solid enough to be staying with you for a good long time and not so soft that it is oozing through and then you are looking for more food too soon. I was doing that for 3 months--all soft foods (and watery foods--yogurt, chili, cottage cheese, puddings, etc). Hang in there and keep trying...I believe that you'll suddenly get results. But also, you paid your Dr and his staff a LOT of $$$$ go back and get some help from them. We all need help doing this, we cannot do it on our own. Virtual friends are great support but the Dr is the primary support. Please keep in touch and let us know how you're doing.

Slow Weight Loss :/
4ALongerLife replied to mistyf6572's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I highly suggest myfitnesspal.com. It's made me 'see' why I get stuck - I'm not eating enough calories a day, I'm not getting enough Water in, I'm not exercising enough... etc. I use it on my iphone and so far, I'm enjoying it. Except today I did almost 4 miles on the elliptical and then weights... burned 580 cals and by 6 pm was at a caloric deficiency. Grrr... myfitnesspal.com has helped me to "get" that. Make sure you get in your water (or liquids in) and try to get in at least (now don't quote me here ok but...) 1200 cals a day (I believe). Otherwise, I think your body thinks it's starving and holds onto every lb. I'm not 100% on the 1200 but I am thinking that's right (ask your NUT if you have one pls). You have to have more caloric intake if you are active or your body goes into starvation mode (who knew? yeah we all did but we thought we knew better huh?) More calories? How? Full liquid diet or any of the other stages except clears: Protein in your puddings, greek yogurt, shake for b'fast/shake for lunch, regular dinner, add an egg for bfast. Great recipes on the world of eggface too, try some of those perhaps! Clears ... .not applicable to you but I had to do this... miso Soup, cytosport whey isolate drinks, Protein powder in Jello, protein powder added to soup, unjury chicken soup....not many options on clears, but just adding it, just in case! My only question is... if I stick to three meals a day and one snack, how in hades do I do this? Good luck to you and appreciate the advice from anyone myself! -
I am on a full liquid/ purée diet. I can eat 3 oz of yogurt or about 4 oz of a protein shake.. Every 3 hours or so with water throughout the day. Is this too much?
-
Sweet I had the same problem I used milk of magnesia but my dr suggested doing a fiber supplement she said because we can become dependent on the laxative and it will make our job of going harder! I personally make sure that I have at least a couple grams of fiber per day and that has helped a lot also I'm kinda lactose intolerant so I try to eat a yogurt every other day!

Eating - 3 weeks post op
EarthyGoalie replied to LynRN's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
According to what I've been told, it sure does sound right! But at 3 weeks, other than the post I made about eating pizza and pasta (do NOT try this at home! I'm a food addict, I didn't resist, and paid the price afterwards)-- anyway, other than that slip up, I was eating 40 to 60 g of protein a day, but my doctor told me that if I could increase, then to do just that! I was having Greek yogurt, and babybel cheese. As well as protein shakes and some string cheese. -
Hello! I am currently day 9, sleeved 12/1. I had some complications, but am feeling 100 times better now. I am on full liquids until PO next tuesday, limited options, getting to the point where I can't stomach some things anymore. I cannot tell the difference between hunger and reflux. It feels like hunger! Its cramping, painful, and makes all sorts of noises( gurgling, sounds like growling.) Im still working on fluids but hit my protein goal( can down 10 oz of protein shake and 5 oz of yogurt, 3/4 cup of soup, all done in accordance to my plan). Its felt like this all week! Today is the first day I haven't felt it, or felt hungry. Im on 20 mg of omeprazole, and was on 10 before surgery because of reflux, over production of acid, etc. Is this what it is? Hunger? Help! 2 Days post-op and hopeful
smileygal replied to BeeGirl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Great to hear you're doing well Bee Girl. I think we all need to get used to enjoying different things now and variety helps a lot. My post op diet is now puree food (from 4 days - 3 weeks post - op) and I'm varying a lot with yogurts, custard, very soft cheese, protein smoothies, puréed casseroles. Variety makes me feel very satisfied. Only if it's a few teaspoons at a time -

motherearth replied to 140icandoit's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
On a positive note, What has been your success? How much weight have you lost? Remember this is a lifestyle change. Perhaps change up your healthy menu. Check out new recipes for low carb low fat. You may want to go back to eating the things you were after surgery for a week. Like, cottage cheese and applesauce in the morning, cream of chicken soup for lunch, chicken breast or Italian meatballs at dinner. Eat Greek Yogurt for snack. And of course don't forget your protein drinks and bars. How many calories and how much protein are you eating a day? Maybe someone will chime in and let you know if you're eating enough or to much. Hang in there. Your body is adjusting still. Depending on how much you had to lose in the first place may have something to do with it. We can't see your stats to know more about your situation. Hang in there! Sincerely, Sherri
