    Puréed foods

Sample of what I do, Greek yogurt (14-15g of protein) for breakfast. 2-3 ounces of tuna or chunk canned chicken mixed with very little mayo for lunch. 2-3 ounces of another meat (protein) for dinner. As a 4th meal I have another Greek yogurt. In between I have milk/ protein shake 2 times a day. Key is to get in a lot of protein.
  2. Ummmmm....let me see, what kind of mushies.... Cottage cheese, refried Beans, Protein shakes, yogurt, ricotta cheese, tuna salad, canned chicken, eggs. It's all protein laden stuff. It's just that I can only have 2 oz. at a time. I am slowly creeping up to 3 oz. and the dietician said I could have 4 oz. now along with the increase in calories. I am really hoping this will make a difference. I know I'll survive. I know I'll get through this. I guess I just need to vent. And not to mention, it's good to know that I'm not alone. Don't get me wrong, it's like Misery Loves Company, but in a way it is! LOL ~C

    What are you eating?

I was banded 7/20 as well. Right now for dinner I am having a Boca BUrger (no Bun) and mashed Cauliflower (tastes like mashed potatos) Not too bad. Im still eating softer foods, fishes, Greek Yogurt, Cottage cheese, shakes and peas. Feeling good.

    hungry!

So I tried to relate a similar concern in another thread...I get hungry and don't get 'full'. I'm 8 days out and allowed to eat yogurt. I can eat about a half a cup (4 oz. is most I'm willing to try at this point). Does anyone know if we really will feel 'full' when we get to more/solid foods?
  5. For 2 weeks preop and 6 weeks postop, I was limited to 3 protein drinks and 2 yogurts. I'm at 8 weeks now and I still use the drinks to get in the required amount of protein. I'm struggling with getting most foods down so I like having the drinks around. I never used the dr. recommended drinks because 1- they were disgusting and 2- they averaged about $75 a week. I use EAS Carb Control in chocolate. Not too chalky or gross.
  6. I was banded on the 9th and am on a full liquid diet until Jan 23rd. Today I had: 8 oz. Protein shake made with 1% milk (I can drink about 6 oz. at a time slowly - I finished the last 2 ounces about 1/2 hour later) 4 oz. light fat free peach yogurt 4 oz. blended soup Minute Maid Light fruit drink. Usually I eat about 4 oz. of something and feel satisfied. I can't say I feel full - I haven't felt the same kind of fullness as I used to feel before the band - it's different. I ate almost 6 oz. of yogurt the other day and knew after the last bite that I should have stopped one bite earlier. I just felt kind of bad in an undefinable way. So, I just don't try to eat any more than 5 oz of anything other than a clear liquid.

    Breakfast options?

I'm 7 months out, and I still have a protein shake for breakfast every morning, except on the weekends.. but when I was in the soft stage and sick of protein shakes, I would have yogurt (dannon greek light & fit) with some protein powder added in ... or some cream of wheat- thinned w/ skim milk and a scoop of chocolate protein powder in it-- that was my favorite.
  8. I am hoping someone can shed some light and help me. I was banded on 10/6/09. I was 247lbs on my surgery date. I have lost a total of 20lbs since surgery date. That means I am almost 6months out and have lost 20lbs in 6months. My band holds 10cc's. I am up to 7.25 but even still I eat atleast 2 cups of food. That scares me because I am almost at the max and if I max...what do I do then? I am so depressed. I am trying so hard. Since my weight loss has been so slow I figured I would start calorie counting...thinking that was my problem. I have been consuming about 1200-1400 calories a day from food not obtained thru a fast food window. Food Examples: I eat breakfast (bagel thin with 2 eggs and a string cheese). A morning snack 4 wheat thin garlic and parsely crackers with laughing cow cheese and 4-5 small strawberries...lunch a lean cuisine with cucumbers (1/2 cup) with about 5 croutons and 1tbsp of Italian Dressing on it....afternoon snack banana with a Super Whey Protein shot....dinner 6-7 grilled shrimp with cucumber salad (above) and yogurt for dessert. Before surgery I was taking about 3000 steps a day.....I am now walking about 13,000 by the bedtime...I bought a pedometer (a good one :-)....Am I missing something in the middle? I am so lost at this point. Even without more saline you would think I would be losing off pure cutting calories and walking. What gives? I need help...I am crying as I type this because I feel like I am failing, failing myself, my children, my husband. Worst of all my 5yr old son was at the dinner table last night and said...My friends liked you on our field trip, they said you were really nice and you have a big fat belly. He had no clue that it hurt me to the core because he is so little but I went into my room and fell to my knees. God help me.

Just banded and need answers. :)

I know you are worried about getting stuck, but rest assured that As long as You are on a liquid or soft diet and you take your time eating your chances of getting stuck are slim. When the day comes that you are getting solid foods like steak and chicken then you need to take it slow as you introduce foods and make sure you eat slowly and chew well. I'm almost 15 months out ( and met my goal weight) I can honestly say the half dozen times I have been stuck, was because I broke one of those two rules. As for a BM, I would use a mild stool softener/laxative like miralax or colace and it wouldn't hurt to add a probiotic yogurt (like activia) to your diet for a week or so. Good luck
  10. Pure Protein is pretty nasty I had Light & Fit yogurt during my full liquid phase. I was a little unsure if the little bits of peaches in there was ok, so I was spitting them out and putting them aside (as daintily as I could lol). I preferred using Fage 0, but greek yogurt isn't everyone's cup of tea. I strained some soups & had a canned lobster bisque that wasn't too bad calorie/fat # wise.
  11. I want to get to 145 that's all my diet is protein shake for breakfast sometimes for lunch to and sometimes lunch is sugar free jelly with natural almond butter on weight watcher bread dinner is a protein veggie and 3 spoonfuls of whatever carb and snacks are usually a light yogurt or an apple/ orange/ pudding and even salad could be a snack. I am simple I drink roughly 6 to 8 glasses of water maybe tea at night
  12. I've been lactose intolerant for 20+ years, so when I started my pre-surgery diet I followed recommendations to use whey Protein isolate powder as a protein source (I mix it with Crystal Light or almond milk). Three weeks into my 1-2 shake daily routine, and I've started breaking out along my jawline, chest and shoulders with hard red bumps. Breakouts like this (along with stomach upset) have happened in the past when I ate/drank too much dairy but I was told that whey protein wouldn't bother me. I will break out the same way if I eat too much cottage cheese, but strangely I can eat yogurt and cheese with no problems at all. I'm not happy, not just because of the bumps but because I stocked up on protein powders in preparation for surgery. That's a lot of $$ down the drain. Headed to GNC to try out egg Protein Powder, but I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar?
  13. So my nutritionist just ok'ed me for eggs cottage chees (ewwww) yogurt etc....any other ideas??? OMG i'm SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Does the soup i strain have to be low-fat creams or is reg fat ok?? ANY INFO will help!!! THANK YOU!! :D
  14. No game

    Is this right?

In the beginning I could eat a whole activa yogurt no problems. It's not really a "solid" Your fine

    Failure

Actually an egg and bacon isn't a bad choice at all. Both high Protein... the bacon is high in fat though, so I would limit that. Sausage biscut from MickeyD's... not a good choice. I would avoid. Bread is not easy to eat for most of us. I avoid it. Cereal, depending on the kind, is also not a great choice. High in carbs and sugars. Have you tried Greek yogurt? Stick to the outer rim of the grocery store. Fresh is key. Stay away from processed and packaged food.
  16. Yogurt and tuna are very different. Yogurt is not dense protein and it tends to slide right through your pyloric valve, thus your restriction is not engaged. Also, at two weeks out your stomach nerves are still healing and aren't necessarily capable of reliably telling your brain that you shouldn't give it any more food. That's why it is so important to measure or weigh a small portion and eat that, and only that, regardless of what physical signals you may or may not be getting. Good luck!

    Need Help With Vegetables

I'm not a breakfast eater, so I will often make smoothies for breakfast. In my green smoothie, I add 2 whole cups of packed fresh spinach. I don't even taste the spinach because the fruit hides the flavor. It took me a long time to realize that I was focusing too much on Protein and not nearly enough on fruits and veggies. Colon cancer runs in my family and I had a pre-cancerous polyp removed a while back. I now focus more on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. I still eat meat, but rarely ever eat red meat anymore. I also get protein from Greek yogurt and Beans. I eat edamame all the time, it's one of my favorite vegetables. if you don't think you can eat the veggies, try smoothies. It's a great way to get the nutrients in without having to struggle to get them down.
  18. Ally - I want egg drop soup so bad. OMG! We won't talk about cheating. Since I have started having NOT clear Protein shakes. I couldn't cut it otherwise. I was starving. I had a bite of low carb, sugar free yogurt tonite. Surprisingly, it didn't do the trick. How is the gurgling in your stomach. Mine is better but by no means gone.
  19. The first couple weeks are pretty tough. Everyone experiences them differently. If you need an IV, go get one. You don't want to jeopardize your health. I could not drink much at all - Water, Soup, anything. The Protein made me gag and to this day I can't drink a Protein Drink. Here's how I got through the first few weeks: - heating pad. I had that thing by my side at all times and I slept with it too. Even after the discomfort stopped, I slept with it as a security thing for a couple of weeks. Totally helped. - Change up the liquids. I know we are not supposed to have sugar, but I was starving myself badly because I wasn't drinking anything at all. So, I switched to full sugar gatorade. I would dilute it because the flavor was too strong, but I got some electrolytes and some fluids and I felt better. I also started drinking milk. As soon as possible, I started drinking liquid yogurt and not the sugar-free kind. Your doctor may not recommend that for you, but that is what I did to maintain my health. I should say that something that tasted good one day would taste terrible the next, but I kept trying so that I could stay hydrated and nourished. - My doc said no Vitamins for the first 2 weeks so I didn't worry about it. - ACID REDUCER!!!! You must take one. I had dissolvable nexium from Mexico. Ask your doctor what you can have that blocks the acid production. I took this religiously for several months. In fact, in the second month I was taking 2 a day. These will save you!! The side affect for me: water tasted terrible. I finally realized that was why I had such an aversion to drinking water in the beginning - my acid reducer changes my tongue somehow. However, you need to take the acid reducer so your stomach can heal and you don't damage your esophagus. - Try to treat each day as a new experience. This part of the journey really sucks. I was dead-exhausted for 8 weeks because of the lack of protein and calories I took in. It was horribly depressing and I thought I would never get through it. After this, you will feel better. You will have different hurdles as you go along (head hunger, anyone?). This is by far the hardest part. Do everything you can to stay hydrated, it will help. You will make it!!!

I was banded on 9/30 as well. I was lucky because my daughter had it done five days before me so I was able to see what to expect. Has anyone taken care of you since your banding? You need a lot of TLC until you are back on your feet. Also, get out of the house if you already havn't. It is good to get your mind off things. I live in NH and the leaves are beautiful now. Have your hubby or a friend take you for a ride or a quick visit to one of your favorite stores. Do you have all the right food and drink at home? I am able to eat yogurt, cottage cheese even had some goldfish yesterday. (just a few) I actually sucked on them until they turned to mush. I wilsh I could help you more. You are NOT going crazy. You have just been through a lot. My daughter had a day where she was teary because of the lack of food but after seeing her Dr., he told her that in just a few weeks, she will be eating normal again, just smaller portoins. He even said I could have a slice of pizza and one beer once in a while. It's not the end of the world, it's a new beginning. Good Luck.

I've been a bad, bad girl....

I had my post-op appointment this morning and I happened to ask why most surgeon's require that their patients go through a long process of being on a liquid diet before introducing back normal foods. I'm not posting this on the main board because I think it would annoy a lot of people, but I thought you would find the information useful since you are already introducing real food (and getting scolded for it!). Melissa (who is Dr. Blackstone's assistant surgeon) told me that most programs require a long liquid diet because they don't have the support staff to answer a lot of questions about food or to deal w/problems that occur when their patients eat food. In other words, if the patient only drinks shakes, they will never get any food stuck, they will never have any problems w/food, etc... because they aren't EATING food. So, this keeps their call volume down. She said that otherwise there is no reason to be so cautious about introducing food. Anyway, so for what its worth, that's her opinion on the matter. If you are curious the details of my post-op restrictions for the first month, I can eat any protein except red meat (chicken, fish, egg, soy products, cottage cheese, yogurt, reduced fat cheese-in moderation). Any cooked vegetables (except potato, peas, corn). Any fruit (but peel it first). No starches (bread, pasta, rice, etc.). This is just for the first month. Then, you can add back in a small amount of starch and red meat. There are other rules... like don't drink while you eat or after you eat for at least 30 minutes (helps the food stick longer in your pouch). And, don't drink calories (no shakes, juice, etc.) because these are considered 'sliders'. And, make protein your main priority (60-80 grams). Anyway, I'm just giving you this info cause I know you were questioning their advice to be on liquids only. Personally, I would be so annoyed if I was told to be on liquids for so long when liquids just slide right through the band. And, you have to learn to chew at some point anyway. I would think its easier to learn this now when we have the least amount of restriction (before we get any fills). Anyway, sorry you got scolded. I think you are doing great!

    No more shakes!

Do you purchase flavored Dannon oikos triple zero yogurt or is it plain Greek yogurt? I used to love Greek yogurt but I can't eat the plain one.
  23. I would try substituting healthier options for your current ones. Try drinking Water instead of diet coke. Or crystal light. Maybe try herbal tea instead of coffee. I found that it wasn't the caffeine I needed in the morning, I just liked a hot drink. It's not easy, and I agree with everyone else, you can't change them all at once. But boosting your water intake and going to the gym regularly are so important post surgery and getting in the habit now will make it a much easier transition. As for sugars, now could be a good time to start checking out healthier sweet tooth foods. sugar free Popsicles are a favorite of mine, and sugar free pudding. I also found healthy choice makes 100 calorie frozen greek yogurts (little bit higher in sugar and carbs than my normal foods, but everyone needs a treat once in awhile!). Most important thing I found pre-surgery is record everything!!! Journal what time you eat and how much. Record how much water you're drinking, and how much you exercise. It can be really helpful to look back and reflect on what you did good and what you can improve on. Good luck!!! You can do this

    carbs

My guidelines were no more than 100g a day, no more than 20g at a time. Do I ever come remotely close to it? Nope. Most days I'm in the 20-30 range on a daily basis, most of that from dairy sources (cottage cheese, yogurt).
  25. hmmm, some of my info is below in my sig. I work out at Curves 3 days a week. I try to walk for 1/2 hour 2 other days. I eat whatever, just less. Yogurt, banana, Lean Cuisine, CIB, salad, whatever for dinner. If I were more attentive I'l lose faster, but I'm a Mom with young kids and I'm enjoying life. I go on kicks where I'm driven to lose and do well, then slack off and maintain. Then struggle to maintain, then get hard on myself again. It's a wonder I have lost anything since the initial 15 pounds post-surgery. I love my band though. It helps me so much!
