  1. It took me 3 months to get in to Emory Bariatric for an appointment with the nutritionist, which would be the beginning of my 6 month diet and exercise program. I knew before I went that if I wasn't a BMI of 50 BCBS wouldn't approve the surgery. I purposely gained weight before going over the last 3 months and weighed in at 49.9!!! The account manager that submits the insurance paperwork told me that even if Id been right at 50 they wont approve you unless you lose weight and show you can follow the program for the 6 month requirements, so I wouldn't be approved either way unless BCBS drops the BMI requirement. They only require 40 for Bypass and Band, but I dont want either of those. I left the appointment, after all that time and anticipation, deeply disappointed. Im still going to go through the 6 month process though i hopes that some time in the next 2 years they might change their policy. Im just so upset about the whole thing.
  2. Varies from person to person depending on how you're feeling and your recovery. I'm a nurse and was back at work doing 12.5 hour shifts 9 days after my bypass. I felt fine and my surgeon said it was fine too, just no heavy lifting.

    New and anxious

She had her sleeve a year and a half ago, but the acid reflux was doing terrible things to her. She had her revision last week on the 24th and has had a few complications, now she has a picque line and will have a nurse come to her house daily. Her process has actually scared me. The Dr isn't sure if she has some sort of blockage and may need another surgery. Damn Sorry to hear that about your friend. I hope she gets to feeling better real quick! And it sounds like her Dr’s all over it. 🤞 🙏
  4. If you suspect that you won't get the support or that your family has biases agains surgical weight loss, then I wouldn't tell them...in fact, I didn't! I have heard my parents speak ill of a distant cousin who had gastric bypass and just "knew" that they would pass judgement on me as well. I also have a sister that is a workout fiend who believes strongly in dietary moderation and exercise (if it were only that simple, I wouldn't be fat!). So I chose not to tell them...except for my mom...turns out we were having a "heart to heart" one day and got talking about my diet and exercise efforts and I ended up confiding in her. I do have to say that my mom has surprised me with her acceptance of it all, but she did need to be educated first...her initial perception was that it was the easy way out and that the magic band makes the pounds melt away (again if it were only that simple, I wouldn't be fat!). She now realizes that the weight I've lost so far is really because of my dieting and exercising (OK, mostly dieting) and has an entirely different view knowing the effort I've had to put forth.

    OCTOBER SLEEVERS- How Ya Doin'?

I was sleeved (revised from band) on Oct 20. Down 17lbs but have stalled this week. I was also low bmi to start.
  6. Sorry to hear this. Have you always had trouble with alcohol or just since you got sleeved? I know someone who hated drinking but after she had gastric bypass she is now raging alcoholic.
  7. I am a sleeve to bypass revision as well. My surgery was last Wednesday, Sept. 23 and my sleeve was in March 2012. I had no problems with the sleeve, and no complications. My sister did the same thing, sleeve and then revision to bypass. She warned me that the recovery for the bypass is harder, and to be honest, I have to say she was probably right. The bypass is more major surgery in that they take something and reroute it. I mean I know that's obvious but.....it does make a difference. Having said that, I havne't had any complications, and I am not at all regretting having it done. There are a lot of things that are the same, the tiredness, etc. I think you will do great, and the complications are just such a small percentage. My surgeon told me afterwards that he was expecting it to be much more difficult than it was, which was nice to hear. The surgery did take about three and a half hours. I also am off work for two weeks, including the surgery. I still feel like Ike I just had major surgery, but I am sure I will be ready to go back in a week. Although most people do say take another week off if you can. The other thing I have noticed....definitely still using my pain medication, but that is more for my incisions than anything. It just seems odd to me that I got on a flight home from Mexico two days after my last surgery, I totally cannot imagine doing that this time. It's just a different recovery. I don't know if that helps? But that has been my experience so far. I think you had messaged me previously, so if you would like to chat more, just let me know.
  8. So why not consider doing the bypass instead. My understanding is that people with acid reflux prior to surgery should not have this surgery and rather opt for the bypass. Our clinic won't perform the sleeve on anyone with reflux prior to surgery.

    Scared To Fail Again...

Hi, would love to hear from you guys who have had the sleeve done since your posts. I'm in the same boat and scared I will fail with the sleeve. I lost nearly 200lb with the band until it eroded and have gained 80lb and am 5 weeks away from the op. I am so undecided ...... Sleeve or bypass, failure, gaining more weight. I am sure there are lots of people out there with similar experiences or am I just one of a few of us Peachy x

    Scared To Fail Again...

I can't help but relate... I just had my band removed and the sleeve revision on 11/27/13. Aside from the pain from the ton of scar tissue and a band that was infecting my stomach, I am feeling pretty good today. I am scared of failing too....So far, (albeit only two weeks) I'm 30 pounds down. It took my more than 6 months to lose that with the lap band. totally different mind set.

    Scared To Fail Again...

I agree. I can't do malabsorption - it nearly killed me due to loss of iron and severe anemia that required 4 hour IV iron infusions 1-2x a week for four months. To take iron intravenously wrecks you. I didn't want to EVER go through that again. Gastric sleeve is the only thing I would consider because problematic malabsorption doesn't really occur. My surgeon (who was supposedly running a center of excellence) told me the band worked because of restriction not malabsorption. Then the awesome surgeon I saw to get the jaws of life out of me said "of course it's malabsorption." So the science behind the band was switched up in the middle of pushing the product?? Yep. This time I have waited, read the medical journals. To me, gastric sleeve is the gold standard for sustained health. My mom had gastric bypass and I don't think her health is as robust as it used to be. Just my 2 cents.
  12. I got sleeved 1 1/2 ago and read really want a revision I'm really not sure what to tell my doc
  13. Although I do not live in South Carolina, my husbands employer goes through them for insurance for his employees. I can't find anywhere that says bcbs of sc covers gastric sleeve. I know they will cover the band and gastric bypass because those two procedures are listed on their website when I log in. Now I'm worried sick. I don't want the lap band or gastric bypass. Does anyone here have bcbs of sc that can tell me whether or not they will cover the gastric sleeve?

    Surgeon recommends sleeve not bypass

I am almost 5 months post-op now from having my sleeve, but when I first met with my doctor, I hadn't decided whether I wanted the lap-band, sleeve, or bypass. I was 99% sure that I didn't want the bypass, and almost positive I wanted the sleeve, mostly because going in like 5 times per year to have fills on the lap-band just seemed so daunting to me. I did consider it because it seemed less invasive, but after doing my research, I just thought the sleeve was the best option for me. So when I went in for my initial visit, my doctor actually told me he doesn't even do lap-bands anymore because they just don't work as well as sleeves. He said something that really stuck with me.... he said that lap-bands aren't permanent, and nobody has ever come in to his office telling him that they want to be fat again. So that definitely made up my mind! Just from my research and my personal thoughts, the sleeve seemed less invasive and had the best results for my situation.

    Surgeon recommends sleeve not bypass

I never had GERd before surgery. I had the acid issues that most people have post op. Losing weight and avoiding trigger foods will probably prevent you from having GERD. Personally I think the sleeve is superior in a lot of way to the bypass, but that is my personal opinion. If your Dr thinks the sleeve is okay for you, and you trust your Dr, have the sleeve. Lots of sleevers never have GERD issues. My reflux was always based on how I ate that day, since cutting out all unhealthy foods I had not had reflux at all (9 months?). Should I still worry it could come back with the sleeve if I avoid the trigger foods? Sent from my SM-G930V using the BariatricPal App

    Surgeon recommends sleeve not bypass

You can still have great success with sleeve and there are a lot of advantages to it. GERD is the main disadvantage, but it sounds like your test results have led your surgeon to believe that's not a huge risk for you. Personally, I never had GERD with any regularity pre-op except when I was at my heaviest weight and eating horribly. I do have GERD post-op, but it's nothing that can't be controlled with a PPI, so it hasn't been a big issue for me. I think it was worth the trade-offs to not have bypass. I'd rather take w PPI every day than have to deal with malabsorption leading to malnutrition or some sort of late-stage complication in the unused portion of my stomach or any of my joins. Just much less long-term risk associated with sleeve.
  17. Hello, I'm currently 5 years out, I had gastric bypass roux en y, and it started out wonderful as far as weight loss goes. I've always been anemic but, over the last few months, I've started regaining weight like crazy and I can't figure out why! Also, a recent blood test is showing that my iron levels are through the roof! I so desperately want to figure this out, and somehow jumpstart my weight loss again, but nothing seems to be working. Someone, please help. I've never felt so hopeless in my life. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  18. I asked my surgeon at my last visit about NSAIDs and he said the rule is for gastric bypass patients not for lap band. So he has no problem with me taking them. But definitely do what your surgeon says

    New to the group!

Hi! So i made the decision to do lap band because it is something that is adjustable. I am 31 and I haven’t had children yet and I want them and I thought Lap band is the right route for me right now because of that I went to experience that I know things can be adjust when this does come along with gastric sleeve and bypass it’s gonna be a bit more harder. I’ve already talk to my doctor about my options and he agrees that I can still have successful weight loss with band as well. I also know family members who have had the lap band and gastric sleeve that they’ve had success with both.

    Sitting on the fence

I've been to (2) consults w/ different doctors. They both have given me the same statistics, even though one does primarily gastric bypass. RNY has a greater chance of complications and death, at the beginning. The lapband is the primary weight loss surgery, in Europe and elsewhere. RNY deal with restriction AND malabsorption (your body absorbs less calories). The Lapband just deal with restriction. Keep reading these message boards and gathering your information. You'll figure it out. Doctors who make you feel like a moron, should not be your doctor in the first place. Best of luck, Shawn

    Sitting on the fence

Hi Chris.......I did alot of research and I chose the Lap Band and here is why.....It can be removed if you have problems.....and you do lose weight slower with the lap band which is good in my case as I have alot to lose. Your skin has alot of elasticity so while you are losing the weight slowly you can work out and wont have alot of the sagging that you can get with fast weight loss. Don't let a doctor tell what to choose...when it comes to your body you choose what you feel is best for you. I have a relative that did the gastric bypass surgery and she now has a huge hernia and is big again. Nothing is 100% unless you want it to be. I had a choice and I chose Lap Band...

    Sitting on the fence

Your doctor may be tactless but isn't he correct in a sense? I thought people with extreme BMIs responded better to gastric bypass than to Lap band. At 450 lb (dependent on your height, of course) it seems as though you be a better candidate for bypass. Maybe if you could lose more weight (get down to 375 perhaps?) lap band would be a safer choice. If I'm wrong, please educate me. Regardless, your doctor should not have upset you enough to make you cry. As with anything else that pertains to your health...get a SECOND opinion.

    Curious

I am going from band to bypass am waiting for my date, I was concerned that my surgeon said I can only expect to lose 30% of my excess weight, if this is true it seems very extreme if I only lose 30 of the 100 pounds I need to lose. What percentage have others lost?

    Weigh In Question

Once you are approved, you are approved. I am also under the BMI with comorbidies and getting a revision from band to sleeve on Feb 8. If they deny you have the surgeon do a peer to peer, that's what I did and I got approved right away.
