Sleeve Post-Op Calorie Intake
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to KevinS62's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am right at two weeks post op, and during the liquids phase my paperwork says nothing about calorie goals. My goals are 60 - 90 grams of protein and 64 ounces of liquids. Liquids for me is three, long weeks. Pureed and soft diet stages I have a calorie goal of 650 - 800 calories. Protein and liquid goals are the same as the liquid phase. Full bariatric diet has a calorie goal of 1000 calories for the first six months and 1200 calories from six months onward. Protein and liquid goals are the same as the liquid phase still. Hope this helps. -
Sleeve Post-Op Calorie Intake
armartin98 replied to KevinS62's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Every doctor is different. I started soft foods at week 4. At week 6 I was told I could eat anything except fresh carrots and crunchy veggies. I try and stay at around 800-1000 calories a day. I have a slow metabolism and I'm older so I lose slower than some people. Also make sure you get your protein in. Good luck to you. -
While every program is a bit different, the consensus is to make your priority your protein goal in the beginning. I was told in the early months to not pay attention to calories but keep eating until my protein goals were met. After the 3rd month, my surgeon said to strive to get to at least 1000 calories.

My surgery coincided with us moving to another state, so there was too many pieces moving, we got another pet, had to get used to new routines, different weather, meeting people. My husband is very confident which I find very sexy. I do not anticipate problems in our relationship ( but I think people who had problems in their relationships may not be expecting them so who knows) he liked me thin, then he liked me fat, and I think he likes me thin(ish) again. Food is being difficult to implement into a routine where we both feel good, I am wasting a lot of food. I have a new addiction, I am buying clothes online, and the excuse of "nothing fits anymore" has stopped working weeks ago, I know I have to stop, but there are too many new options now that were not available to me for years, he has been patient but I can see that it can get bad very fast, I find myself browsing web stores at 2:AM because I am bored, in the past, that would be the equivalent to a Doritos bag in the middle of the night. my poor credit card is scared of me.

That's right around where I was post operatively and then I had a stall that I think lasted for ten days and was probably the most annoying thing to happen to me. Everyone loses weight differently. Shows like My 600 Lb Life skewered my weight loss perceptions because I wasn't losing as quickly as they were; but I was never that big, either. A few things my surgeon's office told me: Make sure you're getting enough water-if a body is dehydrated, it will slow weight loss. Are you hitting your protein goals? When I'm not eating 70-80 g of protein a day, my weight loss slows down. Vary the pace of the walk-walk slow, followed by some speed walking, followed by walking at a normal pace. Also adding in things like hills can help as well.

Eating carbs (pasta, rice, or bread )
sprukop0924 replied to New_me_2022's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I never stopped eating carbs, but they are very limited. My program allows whole grain breads, pasta and crackers. I have also been eating a little brown rice. But, we camp alot with my siblings, cousins and grandchildren and have group meals. I basically eat whatever everyone else eats, but put emphasis on the protein and try to eat anything else sparingly. My stomach size and reduced appetite has successfully kept me from over-eating, I feel. But, for the most part, I try to be make healthier options for day-to-day. For lunch today I will have a flavored tuna pack on 5-6 whole wheat crackers. I won't be able to eat the entire pouch. I'm 62 yoa and I go to the gym 4-5 days per week. I am 11 weeks post-surgery and am down 45 lbs. I feel this is working well for me and I don't feel like I'm dieting. This will be my new normal. I see my surgeon and nutritionist next Monday for the last time and will update if they tell me different! -

liveaboard15 replied to fed-up's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i keep hearing about this method of pre op diet typically from people in the UK. It works i guess. For most here in the USA we do protein drinks several times a day for a certain amount of weeks (I did two weeks) -
Marriage changes post op
Sunshine Princess replied to KimA-GA's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm just shy of three months post op but I feel this changed my marriage for the better. Before, I was just so tired and achy and I didnt want to do anything. Because I didnt do anything or exercise, I was always moody and withdrawn. My husband and I had nearly stopped communicating because I would take things the wrong way and would then smoke pot and eat to make myself feel better. After surgery? It's been different. My energy level is as high as its ever been so I'm doing more around the house. We're actively talking and sharing things again. We're making plans to do things we used to enjoy like go to water parks, concerts, ball games, kayaking etc, and it's brought his energy levels up. I cook a basic protein and vegetable for dinner and he adds to it depending on what he wants-like rice, potatoes, pasta etc. We tend to sit and talk during meals. I think he feels like he has his spouse back so it's been an improvement all around. -
I had never heard of this but if it is the same as DS surgery it’s been around a while and seems to be a good surgery. It’s a little more drastic than the bypass or sleeve but it is said to produce more weight loss. If your doctor thinks it’s warranted I would consider it. The main thing I have heard that is really different is that you may need to take some extra vitamins post surgery. We all have to take them in the beginning and most people have to take some for life but DS usually have to take a few more. As long as you are someone who will comply with taking vitamins probably 3 or 4 times a day for life it should be an option. I would check out Hop Scotch’s suggestion though and see what others who have had the surgery have to offer.

Food intolerance after wls

What are some of your Vegan proteins? I am not a huge meat fan so always looking for new ideas for protein. -
You may find some relevant postsin this forum https://www.bariatricpal.com/forum/1018-duodenal-switch-surgery-forum/, and some people who have posted there may respond to a private message. I googled and I can see that SIPS is also know as duodenal switch. https://www.nycbariatrics.com/weight-loss-surgery-options/sips-procedure "Also known as the Single-Anastomosis Duodenal Switch, this duodenal switch surgery (SIPS) delivers both stomach restriction and decreased absorption. Food intolerance after wls
redhead_che replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had a revision and the thing I find most interesting is the food I had probably 4 nights a week post sleeve, can’t tolerate it and don’t like it anymore—tilapia! I had a go to way of cooking and spicing it and looking at it now makes me want to be sick 🤢 I’m actually getting more protein from vegan sources and I’ve never had the desire to be vegan…just what my body can tolerate now. -
Try adding snacks. It was the only way I could slow my weight loss after I reached my goal but was unable to eat a recommended portion size. I did it with the support of my dietician & chose foods that were nutritionally sound. I still snack to reach the calories I need to maintain but not as often as I did initially because I can usually eat a portion size now. So snacking would help you increase your calories to gain. You could also graze on your left overs - finish your lunch portion for afternoon tea - which would satisfy your dietician’s advice. Try adding another serve of whole/multigrain carbs, another serve of fruit, a protein bar, cheese, yoghurt, chia pudding, hummus, etc. You can snack on raw vegetables too. I found some baked fava beans & chick peas snacks (which are handy when travelling too). I added powdered milk to milk to enrich (it becomes sweet though so I only did it when making chia pudding). I also used non diet dressing on salads. I know it can be challenging because you may not feel hungry or feel like eating & you likely don’t want to establish bad food & eating habits again either. I know that’s how I felt & still feel. Ask your dietician for more specific suggestions than just eat more especially when you physically can’t. All the best.

I got so busy baking a pound cake for my son to take tomorrow and doing laundry that I forgot to snack. Here rolls around dinner time. I had broccoli and chicken. I ate too fast due to hunger. I got about 4 bites in and my stomach felt like it had lead in it. I then sneezed five or six times in a row and knew I ate way too fast. All I can say is oww, oww, oww. They told me to eat slowly and I have been following that rule but not today and I paid for it. It hurt. So here I am an hour later sipping on a protein shake because I didn't finish eating. Gonna make sure I follow that rule particularly. Lesson learned. When they say eat slowly they are not messing around.

What do you do instead of eating?!
fourmonthspreop replied to Lornapc's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It's the most hard in the beginning but things go back to normal (as normal as they can feel after wls). You'll eventually be able to eat certain foods out and enjoy yourself but you'll know your limits and no, food will not be the main reason you're there and that's okay. In fact it's wonderful. It's a part of surgery (beyond weight loss) that doesn't get talked about enough. If you put the work in , food will be there but it will no longer keep you prisoner in your own life because moderation and eating what makes your body feel best will become your main priority. I have a lot of hobbies but I find that instead of eating or focusing on food I have a new found confidence to focus on people....talk to people, not feel self conscious about how I look or what I'm eating, connecting with others when I can. Beyond losing weight, this surgery really freed me from my food prison and I feel like I can open up to other people now that I'm m not hiding and I'm not scared. This is a great thing and I find I am no longer planning around meals but planning around activities, seeing other people and making time to connect. On a less whimsical note, if I feel like eating and know it wouldn't be a good idea I drink tea, diet soda, or chug a lot of water. If I'm still like I want to eat I honor that by eating a high protein snack like a cheese stick or half a protein shake and move on with my day. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Hey everyone! I was just thinking, I had my bypass in Feb this year and I'm slowly but surely learning what I can and can't eat. There are randomly some foods I cannot stand now that I'm bypassed and it's not dumping, it just they taste to intense and sickening that I can't do it. Ever since surgery I am OBSESSED with hot tea (never was before). Drink it every day multiple times a day...something about a hot herbal drink feels so good in my esophagus lol Here are things I cannot stand now that im bypassed but used to be able to eat in large amounts: peanuts, peanut butter, any protein peanut powder or anything with peanut flavor, alfredo sauce, full fat cream cheeses or dairy based dips and spreads, pesto, corn based chips, nacho cheese sauce, mayo/cream sauces and dressing, gravy, chowder. So mostly my taste buds and like my throat (I get a weird sensation there with these foods) have changed and it's like im super honed into how fatty a food is when before I wasn't. It's weird but of course I like it because it helps me eat better and know my limits. So what are some foods you cannot do anymore after surgery that you liked before? Doubting Whether I Should Proceed
LilaNicole20 replied to djhobbes's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was worried about that also (limitation on foods and experience as your food pusher has warned you), but the reality is that you have no limitations on the types of food you’ll be able to taste and eat once you have healed from your procedure and have maximized your weight loss - though you don’t have to wait for the maximization to sample some yummy foods, if that is your choice (once you’ve healed). The real life frustrations I do experience involve limiting meals out - especially hard when husband is athlete and bodybuilder and wants to eat all the time. I have recently had to ask him to stop talking about food. I’m not in any mood to have someone talk about endless options of food that I won’t be entertaining. He asked for pizza and French fries while we were out the other night running errands and I refused to drive to either place. I also try to be outside as often as possible bc when I’m in the house food seems to want to call my name and I’m avoiding it. My will has strengthened since surgery and I can imagine that might be something to fear for a food pusher. -
Hi everyone, I'm just starting on this journey and have mete with my surgeon who mentioned SIPS surgery (Stomach Intestinal Pylorus Sparing). From what I understand it's somewhat of a combination of gastric bypass and duodenal switch surgery. I am not finding much research on it at all, which makes me wonder if it's a good choice. My surgeon advised he will do either surgery ( I'm pretty well set in mind with GP, but am open to options). He described the effects of increased weight loss, lowered rate of ulcers, strictures, & bowel obstructions, increased absorption of nutrients, lowered risk of diarrhea, increased hormonal changes. Has anyone ever had this done or seen much information about it? I still have more than enough time to decide, so I'm in no rush to make a decision. I'd love to hear your experiences with this!

I had mine in May 2022 the first time was in December 2022. My reconstruction was 6500. It's on the high end for MX but I was in a hospital. Dr Campo was one of the surgeons. If you will look up Mexicali Bariatrics you will see they have a few surgeons. They had two to do the surgery and a doctor that puts you to sleep. Each day I was there I had at least two visits from the doctors. They did three leak test. The surgeon explained to me they did not do the surgery tight enough but also only did the middle of the stomach. He said it was an old technique. I had mild qerd. I had a barium swallow there to confirm the best option was to have it reconstructed. If it had been done correct the first time and it was just that I ate to much and stretched it they might suggest a by pass

Doubting Whether I Should Proceed
LookingForward22 replied to djhobbes's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Being nervous and doubtful - especially when making such a big decision is natural. I had doubts and canceled my first surgery - because I didn’t think the program I was in was the right fit. (Found another program and I’m scheduled for surgery in a few weeks). I regretting canceling for a time, thinking how I could be 6 months further down the road if I had just gone through with the original plan, but ultimately I’m glad I waited to find the right program for me. I constantly ask my husband - is this the right decision, because I was sure if I had just tried harder, I could do this without the surgery. (For perspective I’m 48… I’ve been over weight all of my adult life). I was also worried about the inconvenience the surgery, diet and lifestyle chances would impose on the household (hubby and 2 adult-ish kids). I spoke to my pcp, my endocrinologist, two different therapists (mine and the one from the program) about all the reasons I’m afraid to have surgery and all the reasons why I should have the surgery. The program therapist was very direct - telling me no one (in the program) will be upset if you are unsure and want to postpone for up to a year (tests could be used for a certain period) or even cancel. “We will do this when it is right for YOU”, she assured me. My therapist, PCP and endocrinologist (who both advised me to consider this as an option) agreed and said the same thing. My husband has been nothing but supportive. But all of them said I needed to make the decision that is best for ME, not worry about what others personal opinions are, because ultimately I’m the one that has live with my weight and the health issues that go along with it. I’m not going to lie, the idea of surgery of any kind scares me, but I made the decision to have surgery to become healthier, to improve my quality of life. As nervous as I am about things that can go wrong, about having this surgery and messing it up by not being successful, I know I won’t forgive myself if I don’t try. The things I have been doing for the last 30 years have not worked long term and as I get older, it’s likely to get harder - not easier. I owe it to myself to try every resource at my disposal and this surgery is just that, a resource or a tool. I choose not to share my decision with family (outside my house) and most friends (need to know only) while going through pre-op because I didn’t want to invite the opportunity for negativity. Most know I’m working with a nutritionist (I’ve lost about 50 lbs over the last year) and getting a hernia repair (both of which are true), but not that I’m having WLS. The family member opposed - do they struggle with weight or health issues of their own? Why don’t they support your decision? If they raised questions or concerns you thought were good points, did you discuss with your therapist/nutritionist/ drs? While you value their thoughts and input… are they valuing yours? It’s one thing to express concern about someone you care about, but it is absolutely possible to do so in a supportive way. What ever you decide, best of luck. -

You're such a superstar giving us great ideas! Let me know how the liquid protein is! but then again mixing water with the already protein liquid might do the job. -
So i had my 3 month blood test for vitamins and such. I got the results early this morning and everything is in the green. Only small issue is my iron saturation is just 1 point below normal. But iron total levels are good. Other than that every other vitamin, protein, calcium ect... are good. I thought this blood test would have had my cholesterol checked as well because it was high before surgery but i guess not. I will go ahead and order my own cholesterol test here next week to see how it is.

I definitely like it better than the Gatorade. The only way I could finish a bottle of the Gatorade was to mix it with almost equal parts water. I was thinking that maybe that’s what I will do rather than using things like Crystal Light when I want a little something flavorful in my water. I’ll mix these with my water. That way I’ll have protein in my water but it won’t be an overwhelming flavor. I have a bottle of unflavored liquid protein on its way to me but I don’t trust that I can put that in my water without it giving it a funky taste. I’m curious about those protein chicken broths and puddings that I bought. I might have one of those today to see how it goes. And if I like it. My Liquids start next Monday (8/8) and I want to make sure I’m ready to go. I wonder if anyone else has tried them or something like them.

Love it!!!! How do you like that Premier protein clear drink? I tried the Gatorade protein drink and you can taste the protein in it.
