    weight loss

Katie, I had surgery the week before you. I have lost 25.5 lbs, but I haven't lost anything in over a week. I had my first fill on May 19 and I have an appointment on June 24 at which time I hope to get my second fill. I have 5 cc's in a 10 cc band. It is a struggle at this point because I don't feel the restriction at all at this point. I think I felt it a little after my fill but it did not last long. My band started out with 4 cc's on my surgery date. My fill was for 1 more cc on May 19. I don't think being hungry 3 - 4 hours later is that bad. I think you can allow yourself a small snack in between meals. I don't snack after Breakfast and I sometimes will have a late afternoon snack (sugar free pudding or yogurt). I always have a little snack in the evening before bed. Good Luck Alice Banded April 8, 2008 271/245.5/150

What's on your grocery list? Menu?

I buy groceries bi-weekly (on payday). Here are some things I always get: nuts yogurt protein shakes fresh fruit- all kinds (lovin watermelon and cantalope right now) fresh veggies- spaghetti squash, fresh corn on the cob, etc. frozen mixed veggies lentils Tostitos spinach dip- I use it in everything, even in whole wheat pasta salad instead of salad dressing! protein bars cheese to snack on whole grain crackers 100 calorie popcorn
  4. These last 3 days have been the toughest by far. I eat yogurt for breakfast and it's still sitting in my chest like a blockage with bubbles and belches and I just relieved myself of about have of it. Should I be worried that I have a blockage? Sipping tea and it's not going down.

    Food Aversions After Surgery

I think you are smart to wait. I would get a few things to have at the ready, but don’t go crazy. Like with protein shakes, if you have the option of getting single ones or a 4 pack of different brands to see what you might tolerate after. Broth is good and mostly won’t go to waste. I mistakenly bought a case of Recovery Water and I can’t stand the taste. I would just say to just be sure to have your vitamins and calcium ready and the foods you can sort out later. I know every program is different and some people start vitamins at different times. I started the day after I came home from the hospital. I also wasn’t on a liquid diet after surgery, but went straight to puréed stage. So mostly cottage cheese, yogurt, puréed soups and the shakes. Best of luck!

    Pre-op isn't easy....

My problem for the past few days is that everything is either so bland, or I'm just getting sick of the foods/textures that I can ingest. I just read up on a few things online for changing the flavors of broth and yogurt and decaf coffee.... vanilla Extract, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, or Ginger: add to yogurt, coffee, or chocolate/vanilla Protein shakes to change up the flavor Garlic powder, pepper, salt substitute (for low or no sodium broths), chili powder, cumin, thyme, rosemary, basil, paprika, hot sauce, lemon juice, or soy sauce: add to your broth to make it less bland. Don't worry about putting too much - it normally takes at least a tablespoon of any of those (except the salt) to help 14oz fat free/low sodium broths have taste. Hope it helps - I know I can't wait to try them.

  8. My fav is palak paneer, but I also grill veg and paneer like you grill chicken after marinating it. You can use green/red peppers, broccoli, mushrooms, paneer cubes, tomatoes, eggplant, asparagues etc. You can marinate with yogurt and spices or currry paste for an hour or 2 and grill and enjoy them.

    Suggestions on what to eat?

Being dehydrated can make you nauseated. Up your Fluid intake pronto. Are you taking an acid reducer? Early post-op I had a very picky tummy. No dairy except Fat Free Greek Yougurt, no acidic foods, and no spice. No bread, Pasta, or grain. I ate lunch meat, moist chicken, greek yogurt, soy milk, anderson split pea Soup (most other cream Soups bothered me) and GNC Gold Standard whey Protein in vanilla, unjury Chicken Soup protein. I had the occasional saltine cracker. For veggies, I ate a bite of mild veggies, such as zucchini or carrots. Only fruit I could eat was applesauce, bananna, and watermelon. I recommend calling your doc ASAP if you can't up your fluid intake. Lynda

    First day of pureed food

Dumping occurs when you eat something with too much sugar or too much fat. You would have had much more severe symptoms such as racing heartbeat, sweating, diarrhea, etc. When I first started eating pureed and then soft foods, some foods would cause me to feel uncomfortable. Sometimes it happens if something isn't moist enough. When I started real food, chicken felt very uncomfortable and I learned to eat it with salsa, hummus or guacamole to moisten it up. I really didn't do well on the pureed phase. I don't like refried beans and couldn't stand the sight of pureed meat. I stuck to yogurt, shakes, unsweetened applesauce and SF pudding mixed with protein powder for the most part. Once on soft foods I did much better.

    Isopure.....

I've been using milk, but I didn't read the directions...so tiny and hard to see (even with reading glasses). Are you supposed to use Water???? I'm just starting my 3rd week post banding and I am too tight to eat in the morning, so I'm doing the Isopure then. I know you have to do 4 scoops in a day to get the daily allowance of Protein, however, I haven't been super careful about that at this point. I planned to really track protein beginning this week. Tonight I had a cup of yogurt mixed with 1 scoop of Isopure. P.S. Wow...I just read the part of the label I could see and was surprised to see 2 scoops does equal 50g (100& of daily allowance). The other powder I bought only has 25g for 2 scoops. Great! So we can either chug it down all at once in a single drink or I think I will do 1 scoop in the morning and 1 in the evening when I start to feel extra hungry. Does it taste okay in water?? I just ordered some of the packets too....perfect for work.
  12. JLHoogland and Bright, You both have just made me feel SO much better! I am 6 days out from banding and am so ready for mushy food. Bright, I saw that you were having mashed potatoes and tuna salad and I almost wanted to cry! I am STARVING here! I have finally given in and started to have creamed Soups and drinkable yogurts which have made a world of difference, but this clear liquid thing is just such crap! I am salivating thinking about a scrambled egg already! I am slowly going to start trying the mushy foods, but I am concerned that I don't do anything to hurt the band. Thank you for helping to empower me! ~Lea 11/8 Dr. Sanchez 253/249/219 mini goal (less then my hubby)
  13. As the topic says.. I was banded on Feb.12th and so far i've been drinking Protein shakes, sf popsicles, Water and crystal light, That's all. I did have chicken broth in the hospital but it made me sick! maybe it was the brand.. or because the morphine had me very ill.. I dunno, I am not a fan of broth anyways. I received a packet explaining food to have on stage 3 such as - whipped cottage cheese, 1% milk, campbell tomatoe Soup, applesauce unsweetened, sf Jello, yogurt, oatmeal....etc. It doesn't say anything about pudding, can we have that?? I think i'm getting sick of these Protein drinks already! Does anyone eat those things ^^^ too, while on 3? How long does the Mushies stage last? And what are some of the basic foods you eat while on there? TIA! :hungry:
  14. When I introduced real food back into my diet, I had a few staples that really worked well. Just remember to chew thouroughly! 1 - Grilled or blacked chicken or salmon salads with lots of veggies, dressing on the side 2 - Any light, flakey fish..grilled 3 - Baked potatoes with cottage cheese 4 - Greek yogurt with sliced banana 5 - Hummus with veggies on the side 6 - Tuna salad, egg salad served on cucumber slices 7 - Cottage cheese pancakes 8 - Guacamole with veggies to dip 9 - Soy crisps, cheese crisps All make yourself to control the amount of fat and Protein. If you are dining out, you can find most of these meals, just adapt the order as much as possible, and plan on bringing AT LEAST half the portion home.
  15. Can you eat tuna? A can of tuna in Water is 100 calories. I eat them for a snack between meals when I am really hungry. Try this: Breakfast: 1 fried egg 92 cal. 1 piece of bacon 43 cal. 1 whole wheat bagel thin (on the bread isle) 110 cal. Snack: Greek yogurt 140 cal. Lunch: 1 can of tuna 100 cal 1 TBSP Miracle whip free 13 cal. 1/2 TBSP Pickle relish 10 cal. 8 snack crackers 121 cal. Snack: Apple 81 cal. Dinner: 4 oz baked whitefish 132 cal. 3 oz baked potato 79 cal. 1 TBS butter 36 cal. 1/2 cup steamed broccoli 27 cal. I hope this helps give you some fresh ideas. What do YOU eat in a typical day?

Jillian, I am right there with you. I am not as far out as you, I am 5 weeks, but I feel I can eat way more than most people are posting. food seems to go down a lot easier than most people talk about. I am on vacation, and yesterday I ate the following with no issue: B: 1/2 vanilla yogurt with sprinkle of granola, two 1 inch Water melon cubes, 1 serving spoonful of scrabled eggs L: 3 large shrimp, 1 bite mac& cheese (had to try it!) S: 2oz grilled chix; small triange of chees and 2 crackers; 1 half dollar size crocquette D: 2 1/2 inch crab cake few edamame 1 steamed dumpling (again, I had to try it: Emeril's Tchoup chop restaurant) I can eat a whole small Wendy's chili without too much problem, but I am super full afterwards. I can eat an entire slightly larger than palm sized chix breast (I have found that it definitely needs to be super moist though) 2 eggs poached or over easy, but not much else with them, I haven't tried beef yet and I haven't done any raw veggies yet. I am dissapointed somewhat, but actually kind of happy that I was able to eat semi-normal on vacation, and be part of the "group". I didn't feel left out or angry that they could eat things I couldn't. When they ordered the banana creme pie at Emeril's it didn't even bug me. I didn't want any. Same with the gelato sundaes every night (although I did have a small scoop of mango sorbet one night when I didn't have much for dinner. And I did have a scoop of hazelnut gelato once and very shortly after experienced my first bought of "dumping". Sweaty, nauseous, no throwing up, but close). I plan on doing the 5 day pouch test when I get back to kind of de-carb myself, but I am finding a few carbs more carbs make all the difference in my attitude. Helps with the constipation, and general overall mood.
  17. I am almost three months into this adventure. I have found several foods that are my new "staples." First of all, I tend to not have breakfast very often. But do have a cup of coffee with some sugar-free hazelnut creamer. Later I may have sliced turkey (one slice) or ham with a slice of swiss cheese (a very small slice) rolled up with a bit of mayo. It makes for a yummy lunch. I really can only do one slice if it's fresh from the deli as those slices are quite large. I also like to have some low-fat cottage cheese or a yogurt for lunch. For dinner, I may have a small bit of grilled meat, chicken or hamburger. I love Trader Joe's Chili Chicken Lime Burgers, but can't finish a whole one. (Thank goodness for my trusty dog, who helps me out quite a bit by finishing what I cannot eat.) I also like to have a few tablespoons of Wendy's chili with a dollop of low-fat sour cream on top. Or a very small piece of salmon baked with a bit of Polaner all-fruit (peach or apricot) on top. And I often take leftovers of this stuff to work with me the next day for lunch, though the servings sizes that I bring in make my co-workers chuckle. Last but not least, pork rinds for Snacks. Such a crunch satisfier. Hope this helps.

What If This Was All For Nothing?!

Hi... Dont feel discouraged. I too feel the same exact way! Have had those same thoughts and keep thinking "what if i'm in that % where surgery doesnt work?". I bought a 2pz measuring cup and measure my foods, sometimes i feel i can eat a whole yogurt but stop myself. I too have tries unhealthy things to feel "normal". And it didnt hurt or kill me. But the guilt sets in and I walk it out. Hang in there! You'll get through
  21. I may have ate a little too much...creamy soup about 2 oz., Smoothie Yogurt (4 oz.) and then I had some mushy zucchini..not all at the same time but probably within 30 minutes and all of a sudden the back of my neck and my upper back started hurting really bad...but I didn't feel stuck or anything. Does being stuck or eating too much come in different forms? I don't know it was just really strange...I'm 11 days post op...

New Guy Otb 3 Days Po

My dr had me add powdered milk to everything when I got to the full liquid stage to bump up the protein. 1 scoop in yogurt, pudding, soup, shakes too! As for water try room temp. But if your having discomfort it might be gas… so try walking more (down the hall 2-3x) before and after sipping. I didn't get all 64oz in for a couple of weeks. Way to go, your doing great!

What do YOU eat in a typical day?

It's been almost 2 months, I have been very confused as far as post op directions because my surgeon gave me the clear to eat solids at 5 weeks, and was very strict at first with his post-op directions, but it seemed to progress very quickly. There aren't any local nutritionists that have experience with the sleeve, i have checked into it. I have even checked with the local weight loss surgery centers, and they only perform gastric bypass and lap-band, they have yet to perform the sleeve. I went to two different gastroenterologists seeking their opinions and looking for post- surgery follow up care, and they didn't really understand what I was there for. They said i was fine, and that I should be okay to eat what I am comfortable with eating, and that my stomach will let me know if i have trouble with any foods. One doctor told me to take new foods slow and cautiously, but at 5 weeks to introduce them in small amounts and that I should be okay with them and that the major healing has probably already occurred and my risk for leaks would be very low by that point. At this point the only foods that i have problems with are green Beans, and acidic foods or high fat foods (with the exception of Peanut Butter, it seems to be the only high fat food that agrees well with me AND keeps me full for most of the day). At times I wish i had used a different surgeon whom I would have follow up care with and had better outlines of everything from the start. I have been told different things by everyone. I can always go back to my "safe foods"- yogurt, smoothies, applesauce, and Protein shakes, and try to pass a few more weeks or a month by to give more healing time, as long as I keep myself busy I can distract myself from thinking about eating other foods. I seem to have a fairly high metabolism, after surgery i consumed quite a bit more than most people in the way of calories (around 900 a day through protein shakes) and still lost pretty fast. If I can aim at about 1200-1400 a day, I can slowly get to my goal, then maintain at around 1800-2000/day.
  24. I am on the full liquid diet now. My dietician gave me a list of 5 things I can have. Most before surgery were great, but with the change in my stomach I can't eat them all now. Her list is skim milk, strained soups made with skim milk, sugar and fat free pudding or yogurt, protein supplements, and no ice cream. So wait.....that's really only 3 things. Please help me!!!! What was or is your favorite thing to eat on the full liquid diet???? I'm going crazy!

    What keeps everyone more satisfied?

Especilkay at the end of my night shift, around 5 am, I do 1/2cup vanilla bean geek yogurt with 1/2 shop of vanilla protein shake powder. Turns the 10 ish gm protein breakfast into a 23g breakfast. To stir it up, I add low fat granola, raisins, and slivered almonds (all totaling about 2Tbs). Pretty yummy!!! This lasts me at least until i wake up later I'm the day and often I'm not hungry when I wake up.
