Surgery This Thursday, 4/5/12! A Little Introduction...
NewMissB posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone...Britt here from NY. I've been lurking around reading posts here for a while, and all the supportive people on this site really helped inspire me to go through with getting banded. I've been overweight since I was a child, and always the heaviest in my family. Lap band was never something I considered simply because I felt like it was "giving up," and that being banded meant I was weak...which is exactly what everyone else thought of me, and why I didn't want to give in. I have completely changed my opinion in this regard, and know that I am taking a step in the right direction to get myself healthy, which DOES NOT mean I'm weak, rather it means I'm strong enough to admit that I can't do it on my own, which so many people can't admit. I'm less than three days away from surgery and I have many different emotions going through me right now. I'm scared, excited, nervous, determined, and confused. Will my liver be small enough? Will I be able to handle the pain? I'm terrified to wake up and find out that my liver was too large and I couldn't have the surgery. I've been doing opti for two weeks, and have cheated once or twice the first week, but only with a small piece of low fat cheese, or a bite or two of a banana. I have only lost about six pounds, which I think is good, but hearing what other people have lost makes me think I should have lost more. My doctor didn't specify an amount of weight to lose prior to surgery, so I'm super nervous that I won't be able to get banded! Is there anyone else who didn't lose a lot on Pre-op but still had no problems with getting the surgery, or their liver being too large? Thanks for any help you can give me, I appreciate it! -
I've been on atkins for 2 weeks. Surgery is tomorrow. For 2 days, I've really wanted a Dr Pepper. I don't usually drink sodas but for some reason, that's all I want. I just found out that Diet has NO carbs!!! So freakin excited!!! Since sodas aren't really possible with the band, this totally made my day =) LOL

It is likely what you are eating. At three months, you should be on solid protein, chicken, beef, etc. if you are eating that first, as you should be, you will fill up after a couple of ounces. Softer foods are much easier to get down. Is that maybe what is going on?

Bandista is right, it's basically like being on a diet at first! I go to a support group and the nutritionist said that this is the part people seem to forget when they get surgery, that after it can take a while to get the proper amount of restriction in the band and until then, it's up to you! When I was on mushies I couldn't ever tell if I was really full. I just stopped when I finished my 2-4oz of food because that's what my nutritionist's guidelines were for each meal. It's REALLY important to follow the guidelines they give you though! If you overeat too often after surgery, it can lead to complications like band slippage. I'm about 6 weeks post-op and I still only eat my 3/4 - 1 cup of food per meal, even if I'm starving after it's gone. It's hard, but I know it'll be worth it in the end best of luck to you! -

I need to get to work on all my stuff! lol.....2-3 weeks down is gonna kill me.... -
Well Renee I wanted to but I havent' gotten very far. I was only losing about a lb or 2 a month and then went in for a fill and lost 5 the first week, then it slowed down to about 2 more in the next few weeks. I only have a week left so I don't think I'm going to lose these last 8 lbs by then. I got my period so that threw me up a pound but if and when I dare get back on the scale I doubt that I'll have lost any more. But good luck to you! I'm glad you found us.

What is the #1 food you'll miss?
Mayaresearchmom replied to Amour.de.lionne's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hot and spicy thai food! Only 11 days out from RNY, and was told nothing spicy or peppery for the first 6 weeks -
The fluid is from the IV. It will leave your body in a week or so. Keep drinking your water and it will help flush your system.

Never wanna eat again
BellaItaliana replied to keke's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think you just ate the shrimp too soon. At one week out, your sleeve is really not very far along in its healing yet. My plan doesn't allow solid food like shrimp (or anything solid) until at least 30 days out. At 7 days I was still on clear liquids, then full liquids (cream soups, etc) for ten days after that. If you take it slow and don't eat things that your stomach isn't yet ready for, it won't hurt as much.... and someday after you're totally healed, you'll be able to eat "normal" food again... just alot less of it. The stage you're in now is temporary.... try not rush it. -

Awesome! I am traveling this week for work. I fit in the plane seat with no issues. The seat belt buckled, with room to spare! and I wasn't infringing on my neighbor's space! -
Pre- Op Weight Loss Question
Dub replied to kondasa's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
3 weeks to lose 4 pounds ? You can easily lose this and much more. Did they give you a diet to follow ? If not, then as folks have suggested above there are ways to drop off weight really fast. The pre-op diet many of us followed dropped off a pound per day. It works due to calorie deficit and ketosis. You've got plenty of time to lose the weight. You can do this with great success. -
Pre- Op Weight Loss Question
PayItForward replied to kondasa's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor required a two week pre-op diet for me. I had 3 Protein shakes and one Soup a day. Stayed away from high-fat and creamy Soups. I lost over 20 lbs during that time. Maybe you could try something like that? -
So I went in for my consult on Friday and I didn't get good news. The plastic surgeon that we saw doesn't want to do the surgery because it is going to be VERY EXTENSIVE and he feels that it is too far away from home. He said to do it I would need, MR, the regular horizontal TT incision and then a vertical "T-incision" as well. He said I have NO elasticity left in my skin! He was a very good surgeon and feels that he could do the surgery, but the likelyhood of complications (separated incision, infection, seromas) would just make it too risky to do when we live 3 hours away. Plus he said that with them removing 10-15 pounds of fat the shock to the system could be too great for me to be that far away. So he refered me to some surgeons over here (we don't live in a big city AT ALL!) When I called the 4 that are here on Friday these were the results: 1 said they wouldn't do the surgery because it was too extensive, 1 didn't have a financing program, 1 said they didn't have financing BUT they would try to get it approved through insurance because of my back pain, and the other one didn't answer. The one that didn't answer does use CareCredit and I did get approved for that last night so that is an option. Also, my SIL lives an hour from the original surgeon that I saw so I have a call into him to see if he would do the surgery if we stayed with her for a month. She graciously said that would be just fine. SOOOOOO I still have options. Also with the ability to get financed through CareCredit, I can expand where I look for surgeons and have it done in WA and stay with my brother as well. My problem is that I am running out of time. I have to have the surgery done from the end of June through the first 2 weeks in July. Anytime after that I don't know that I would be ready to go back to work at the end of August.

Yesterday was my big day. I am a little sore but nothing that bad. I am on the tylenol with codeine only now. vicodin was good yesterday. I slept really well. My stomach is definitely flat. He removed 6.2 lbs from my abdomen. My thighs look better too but I will not see the true outcome until I can get into the girdle next week. Thanks everyone for the posts. I am healing nicely. My husband is a Godsend. I am ready for a glass of wine already! That is how good I feel. I hear it makes the worldy difference having a good anastesiologist. He said he uses a ton of pains meds during the procedures so lets see what tomorrow brings. I think day 3 might be the most difficult. Right now I am very comfortable. I get one of my drains out tomorrow so wish me luck. Julie -
Banded Friday Jan 19th

hello I am excited about my surgery. I hope the Surgeon calls me on next week with a surgery date. The office called me on last week and said they reviewed my chart and will be writing my orders for surgery. Has anyone used the magic bullet and is it helpful? -
I lost my 100+ lbs over the past 2 yrs, so very slowly. I have minimal sagging skin on my tummy, none on my arms, and very little on my thighs. I work out an hour, 3x a week. Mostly walking on the treadmill, but also weight exercises. If I had the money now, I'd probably have the skin taken care of, but I figure the only people who see it is me and my husband - and he doesn't care. So, the moral of the story? Lose it slowly, work out, and don't worry about it. If you're meant to have saggy skin, you will - and then you can take care of it if you want. Marci

Embrace the stall. I had one at about 3 weeks. At 2 months tomorrow my weight loss seems to be speeding up even though I am eating more. My body surprised me by dropping a few more pounds this week. My surgery was only 3/9, and I am down about 40 pounds including the 7 day pre op diet. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
