  1. It seems like the docs can define things differently (and whether it really makes much of a difference is anybody's guess.) My doc didn't discriminate between liquids, purees, mushes and soft Proteins, but just let us move between them during that first month as our tolerances dictated. It sounds like your interpretation is reasonable, though yogurt isn't usually pourable (except for some of the yogurt drinks.) If in doubt (beyond checking with the doc or nut), you can thin things out a bit with Water or milk, or just see how the thicker consistencies go as they are acceptable on some programs and there is so much overlap between the different programs. Don't be afraid to call the doc's office with any such questions, as if things aren't clear to you, they likely aren't clear to lots of other patients on the program, and the instructions should clarify such things, and if they don't they should be rewritten so that they do.
  2. First off- I am 6 weeks post op banding. I have 3 ccs in a 10cc band, put in at time of surgery. I am Just wondering about getting something stuck. Thursday night (3 1/2 days ago) I accidently took a handful of pills all at once. How dumb! I knew as soon as I started to swallow I was in trouble. Well, since then I haven't had much of an appetite. I did have some pain between my breast a couple days. I am trying to eat but nothing sounds good. I have only been eating yogurt and scrambled eggs with melted cheese. That and warm Water is about the only thing that sounds good. Oh and I had some cream of wheat. Here it is Monday and I still have no appetite. My stomach feels "jittery" at times, if that makes sense. The pain has subsided. I just feel so weak. I do have an appointment with the surgeon day after tomorrow. They had planned on doing a fill, but I say NO! I don't think they would anyway with me feeling the way I do. My question is does this sound what others have gone through after getting something stuck? When the band slips you throw up right? Or can't get food down? Thanks

    Carbs...UGH!

My nutritionist's advice: Eat as few carbs as you can, stomach as much Protein as you can (my goal is 60-80 grams a day). Drink the Protein shakes if you have to. There are ways to make meat or dairy protein more interesting. I am still on purées but made a pot roast, add a tsp of pesto or some salsa to chicken and eat hummus, tofu, greek yogurt, tuna, eggs, etc to break up the monotony. All these foods are high in protein. The more carbs you consume the harder it will be to lose weight over time. You can introduce cooked vegetables and some fruit (beware of the sugar) for variety but you should only be consuming starches and simple carbs in strict moderation.

Help please. Is my band to tight?

Thank you so much for the imput. when i say vomiting I mean i will be eating and suddenly feel uncomfortable in my chest like the foods not going down then have to go to the bathroom and throw up chunks of food. It happens all the time now but I thought maybe i was eating wrong because several of the times its happened it was bread but then when it happened w/ yogurt I started to worry. Water stays down as long as i dont drink to much to fast. I havent had any problems until recently and I just thought maybe once i started vomiting that it was causing the band to tighten or swell. I dont have insurance so was trying to avoid going back to doctor unless I have to. Thanks

    Protein

I get a lot of my daily protein from chicken, eggs, cheese, and yogurt. Those are my main sources.

    Starving

I got hungry on post op day 6. I ate some Protein with no sugar and I feel better. I drink all the time. I had a Soup with chicken broth and eggs. I blended well and it was so good and filling. I had the sleeve. I was given so yogurt but it was too sweet because I had a dumping episode after that. Add some protein in your diet slowly and see if that helps. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G750A using the BariatricPal App
  7. You really won't feel very hungry for a few months, but by your first month some easy digestible foods are Yogurt, scrambled eggs, shredded chicken, turkey with a broth (moist is the easiest to eat), peanut butter, protein shakes, sugar free pudding, sugar free jello. You basically will work on eating protein and very little 2-3 ounces will fill you, I know it sounds crazy, but I am a year post mop and 4 ounces of chicken fills me up. Also remember natural sugars versus processed sugar foods are very different. I haven't had bananas yet. Remember the majority of weight you lose will be during the first 5-6 months and the. It really starts to slow down, so enjoy the not feeling hungry and just focus on proteins, and keeping hydrated. I live on chickens, Powerade zero and coffee

    Food Suggestions Needed Please

Keep in mind that the liquid portion of the soup will fill you up fast so you may not get in your protein requirement this way. If you can't eat solids yet don't push yourself stick with softer foods; cottage cheese, greek yogurt, canned tuna/salmon, pureed beans(chick peas have the lowest amount of protein by the way), soft fish, thin soups with protein powder(easy to get down). Skip ALL of the crackers, useless food right now. I also try to have a protein shake in the morning with at least 30 grams of protein and then I am half way there at least for the day.

    meat eaters

Try anything and everything. I tried chicken salad and was not impressed. Maybe it was the way I made it. Fish, shrimp, shell fish? Also I make protein shakes with mango and strawberries. Also Greek yogurt. Good luck! I know it's frustrating!

What Do U Mean By That?

Early on I thought I was having problems with dairy, but eventually I figured out that the very loose stools were due to the post-op antibiotics. It cleared up as soon as I finished taking the antibiotics, and started eating mushies and solids. I have not problems with dairy now (5+ months post-op), but I don't drink regular milk (only unsweetened almond milk, once in a while). cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. are all well tolerated (and loved!) Now my biggest challenge is eating too fast (I still haven't learned how to slow down enough!), and occasionally eating too much . Just ONE bite too much can send me into bad stomach pain and I have to lie down or walk around (no sitting, crunching my stomach together even more!). And I get the "slimies" where I have excess saliva production, have to swallow alot and wait for it to pass. Not fun! I also get hiccups when I'm full or slightly past full.

    Yougurt

Greek yogurt is one of my go-to foods. I love it! I add sunflower seeds, sesame seeds or chia seeds. Gives it crunch, added protein, and nutrition.

    Food panic attack

i don't even have a DR picked out yet and i am freaking out about eating before/after surgery...i eat a cup of yogurt and think, "after surgery i will only be able to eat half of this" or i take a glorious swig of my coke and think "after surgery i can't even have this anymore"...i know i have got to STOP this thinking...my obsession with food is part of what got me to this point...so when i start to think of all that i am going to miss i remind myself of all that i am going to welcome into my life...and that helps me get out of my own head

    Food Suggestions Needed Please

My NUT suggested adding a bit of gravy to meats to make them moister. I eat a lot of Greek yogurt and cottage cheese. Have you tried refried Beans.
  17. Had surgery August 1, all went well and surgeon fixed a small hiatal hernia at same time. I've had no real pain and for that, I am very thankful. I am still extremely week! One week out I saw PCP and tests showed I was anemic(no surprise) and I had H-pylori-stomach infection. Until then I was able to get liquids in and close to 90 gr of protein. Put me on 3 meds for two weeks to get rid of h-pylori, Now I can hardly stomach anything. Very difficult to get liquids in. I can eat mashed potatoes and gravy, pimento cheese, and today, cottage cheese. Liquids make me sick but I'm trying to get down.....protein shakes are a no-go! I do put unflavored protein in everything I eat. I can also do pudding, yogurt, jello, and SF popsicles. I am on mushies...but nothing tastes tolerable with this medicine. I started back to college and I am a walking wimp! Brain fog, and so weak I feel like I can fall out at any time. Please suggest something to eat that might help with energy. I am barely getting those chewable vitamins down. Also eating 2 calcium bars a day. I have B-12 patches, and liquid B-12 and taking Vitamin D twice a week. You'd think Iwould be bouncing off the walls, but I'm dragging my butt from one day and on. P.S. I'm 53 years old. I have lost 20lbs as of yesterday. Happy for that but, I need to get back into my life. Thanks for suggestions! Wishing everyone else well!

    "Lucky Losers" (March 2009 banders)

Hi All, I was banded on the 5th, been on liquids since. I'm hoping to move to mushies this week at my 3 week appt. I'm leaving Sat. for a 5 week assignment in India:ohmy:, so will be looking for some encouragement from abroad. I will be on mushies, soft foods, and transitional foods while away. I should be good with eggs and yogurt for breakfast, and plan to bring instant oatmeal and protein drinks for lunch, but will be struggling for dinner.:huh2: Any ideas are welcome.

  21. Hi All... I'm 3 weeks post-op and I can't keep food down. My 1st week post op seemed so much better than week 3. I placed a call to my surgeon of course, but I'm waiting for a response since it's the weekend. I love this forum because there is so much 1st hand information. Anyways... Week 2 and going on week 3 has been miserable. I can't stand the thought of putting anything in my mouth because of the nausea. I was prescribed an anti-nausea patch, but so far it hasn't worked. I'm just worried because what little I do try to eat won't stay down. I can drink water, but even then I start getting nauseous. I'm not eating too fast either. I took two tiny tiny bites of yogurt this morning and it came up. I just feel so helpless. This is not what I wanted. I want balance and I want to feel healthy. I feel more u. nhealthy now than I did 30 pounds ago pre-op. I'm glad I've lost weight but this is not happiness. I would take back my 30 lbs pounds if it meant that I would feel good physically. Sure I was unhappy with my pre-op weight, but this nausea and physical starvation (not hunger) is making me feel so radically unhealthy and ill. I know everyone says it gets better... but I don't think I can stand much more of this. Do most people have this relentless nausea and disgust towards food? Please know that I'm not trying to be negative, but right now there are no positives. At this point the weight loss isn't worth it. I hope that one day it will be.

    Protein

Keep trying different ways of getting in your Protein. Those protein goals take time to build up to so don't panic if you don't meet them right away. Keep trying protein drinks/powders until you find what you like. I tried at least 10 different ones as a trial run pre-op and I've probably gone through another 4 -5 post-op. A few I still have occasionally, but there are 2 I consistently use; Isopure unflavored and CVS whey protein vanilla flavor. I don't think I hit my protein goals until somewhere between weeks 1 and 2 post-op and that was just the basic goal of 60gms. I know hit between 80 - 100 everyday. Unflavored powder that can be mixed with Soups is a nice break from the sweet drinks. Mixing them with Water helps you meet you Fluid goals and lesson the super sweet taste. If you are allowed yogurt, 0% greek yogurt will also cut the sweet taste. Try mixing the Protein Powder with water and a bit of greek yogurt until it's a thinner drinkable consistency. The greek yogurt (I use FAGE 0%) adds a bit more protein and the slightly sour taste will cut some of the sweet of the protein powder.
  23. I wish your family was more supportive. My hub and did the week long pre op liquid diet with me. We did not cook that week. The kids got microwave meals or sandwiches etc. He kept up with me after surgery and I did not enter the kitchen to cook until 3 weeks out. He did not eat in front of me or he ate what I was eating. He likes all the sugar free items and yogurt and cottage cheese etc. Now they love that I'm back to cooking. As a family we eat very healthy at meals and our downfall is Snacks. There are a lot and not healthy. Trying to change that for them now!!! They will probably come around. It's impossible to see how good you will start looking and feeling, and not be envious. It will be the best thing you've done for yourself. That's what matters.

    Pudding

Call your nutritionist. I was allowed yogurt on full liquids which would be the same consistency.
  25. I agree, the same has happened to me. My pre op is 0 carbs and only protein from low fat milk and low fat yogurt. Toothpaste is my best friend
