I don't know how much you have to lose, but just make sure you are going all you can to help yourself during this "window of opportunity". Exercise, watch your protein and calories and make sure you are drinking enough! I know you will get there. 70 lbs sounds really good to me!

question concerning weight and goal
MINI-Me replied to mommytoethan's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 5'6". I want to be 135 so I'll be 5 pounds more than you guys at 130. I picked that weight for 2 reasons: (1) That is about mid-way on the healthy BMI & sounded good to me and (2) I weighed that when I graduated from high school. Of course, at the time I thought I was "fat" ... but looking back at pictures, I looked goooooood! As of this morning's weigh in, I am 12.8 pounds from goal & smiling as each pound melts away. On a positive note, the good thing about stalls (just coming out of one) is that you see quite a bit of movement on the scales after one is done. Mommydog14 ... you are just over a month out of surgery. Your body is still healing and adjusting. I wouldn't consider yourself losing slowly. Pre-surgery, wouldn't you have loved to see a consistent 1.5 pounds a week? You are doing fine. Soon you will be able to exercise and up those calories. The weight WILL come off! -
Officially the slowest loser, but a loser!

I have complained enough about it but I am on the same path you are! I wouldn't wish this on anyone BUT in finding the bright side: 1) I went ahead and bought a new pair of walking shorts and capris (we're talking Kmart here so no big $ invested) because I know that I won't be out of them in 10 days like some people. And I am a thrift store shopper by nature so this was a big splurge as an atta girl for doing what I needed to do. I also bought 3 new tshirts from CJ Banks. Again, on sale, but they are ELBOW LENGTH!!! and with my flappy arms just what I needed. 2) As you said, it won't come back. I know some folks have rebound weight gain but this first 20 are gone forever. and 3) Here's my biggie. I did this on the DL. I AM SO GRATEFUL for that decision. I knew I would be a slow looser. I was only eating about 2k calories a day when I was "pigging out" so I knew. When I did Weight Watches I had to undercut my allowed points by about 1/3 to lose the 1 pound a week once I'd gotten past that first 2 or 3 weeks. That's the main reason I kept this private. I will admit that in 2001-2002 I basically went on a long term fast and lost and lost fast so this is going a bit slower than even I expected. But still, it's going. And it will eventually be gone. And I am so glad I don't have to be explaining to people why I'm not losing weight. The one friend I told asked me last weekend when I was going to have my surgery. :(Yep. After 2 week pre-diet liquid fast and over 1 month post op, she wondered when I was going to finally get it done! And she's been in Florida for 3 months and not seen me everyday so it's pretty obvious it's not showing yet! Hang in there. We'll get there too. We're just walking instead of running. -
Stalls are part of the process.. I hva had about 6 to 8 stalls... I am 15 months post op.. try changing your diet and add more protein.. sometimes eat a bit more calories.. stall tells your body to slow down in your weight loss.. its expexted and normal... most important part dont be discouraged.. best of luck

I have absolutely no energy on this pre op diet. I can only have Protein Shakes, Water, Zero Calorie/Zero Sugar drinks/enhancers, Sugar Free Popsicles and Jello, and Low Sodium broths. I am meeting my daily protein goal, my daily water intake, and taking all my vitamins. Somebody mentioned iron and I called my surgeon's office and they said there is no need to take iron right now and that they will check those levels 3 months out. I'm just worried because my iron runs low and I am exhausted, dizzy, and weak all the time. I have 5 more days to go on this clear liquid diet. My hunger really isn't even an issue, the water and protein keep me at bay (most) of the time. Does anybody have any other suggestions? Thank you!

Tonight is going to be snort of bourbon night. It may be a big snort. This morning started off with the impending visit of a friend of mine. He needed to go to the sawmill I frequent to get some lumber he was not able to source local to his own home. He lives about two hours from me. About 15 minutes before his anticipated arrival, my father called me to inform me that their well pump had gone Tango Utah, and they had no water. Both my parents are in their eighties. They live a little more than an hour north of me. Without going into all the sordid details, I managed to get my friend his lumber, and shuffled back to NJ, from whence he came, all the while coordinating between a plumber friend of mine and my father, who has an innate distrust of anyone he doesn't know. I am usually the one on deck for doing his plumbing work, but I told him we were hiring out if I had to pay for it myself. Oh yeah, the sawmill is located in "dark country". There is no cell service there. Not even texts get out of the cellular black hole there. So in addition to being monkey in the middle, I had to get it done while traveling in and out of phone service. One of my major accomplishments, perhaps even an NSV it is so big, was teaching an 82 year old man how to use his phone to take a picture and TEXT it to me so I could inform the plumber of what was actually going on. And I talked him through it over the phone. I did get the privilege of standing in an unheated basement in the mountains (read high temp of 15 degrees today) to help with the work. One other detail for the day is my friend had sleeve surgery almost six years ago. It did not work for him because of his intractability when it comes to his eating habits. But, he has experienced a rebirth of determination watching my success so far, so I have been counseling him as to how to mend his rotten ways (Jethro Tull reference there for those who might recognize it). So yeah. It's time for a snort. I'll be back on my strict diet again tomorrow. I am invoking the 80/20 rule laid down by the folks at my program. They never did say what those 20% bad calories could be, and I have been cleared for booze. The drinking light is lit. If I am not careful, I'll be lit too.

Have you utilized a BMR calculator and or TDEE calculator? They can provide some helpful insight. BMR calculator tells you how many calories your body burns at complete rest in a day. TDEE calculator tells you how many calories you burn a day at your specific activity level. These calculators can give you an idea if you're perhaps eating too few calories a day, especially if you're burning more calories than you realize when you work out. Also you mentioned weight lifting, and I was told by my trainer and bariatric surgeon to not lift heavy until I reach goal weight. Something about your body can't lose weight and build muscle simultaneously... so lower weights and higher reps is what I was told to do while losing weight. Best of luck to you! You'll get there! -
have no fear....! you can do this. if you can, dispose of the candy. give it away, throw it away. you don't need it. empty calories. think about this, for what you can eat for 2 full size candy bars, which will make you not loose, nor keep you full. you can eat an omelet, with some fruit, which will keep you full for hours. and more than likely have calories to spare. i will admit, i did indeed indulge. hey we're human. but you know what, the next day, i didn't and haven't since. it's just easier for me, if i don't go there. mainly, because it's like entering a deep dark vortex of evilness, and i have trouble finding the door to come out. so, i just try to avoid it. it's easier for me to avoid it, than have one or two bites, because then it becomes candy bar after candy bar. almost as if an alien entered my body and took over. trust me, it isn't a pretty site! hahaha. on a more serious note, find what works for you. i know, i want this and for me to get there, i have to avoid some things like the plague. i hope this helps. and good luck. YOU CAN DO IT!!

Wish I had that revulsion to food but I don't. Help!
BLERDgirl replied to llmccay1's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I just posted this in another thread but it mostly applies. PLAN. FOR. IT. Most of us are food addicts. We have no self control when it comes to food. We will under estimate what we ate and then be surprised when the weight gain happens. I strongly advocate keeping a food diary. It's not to obsess over calories and how low we can keep then and stay healthy. It's to keep ourselves accountable. I use myfitnesspal. I have it set to also include carbs, sodium, fat and sugar. There is a maximun level of carbs, fat and sugar that works for me, so I monitor that. I used to have a problem with my feet and legs swelling so I monitor my sodium levels. I fill out my diary in the morning and add or subtract in the evenings according to what I actually ate. They also have an app for on the go changes. I do not allow anything in my house that I cannot eat without bingeing. I don't care is it's Suzie's favorite thing. It's not allowed because I am an addict and have no self control. If you have family members who miss their favorite food, tell them to buy a single serving portion and eat it. Sabotaging foods are not allowed in the cabinets. If you were an alcoholic would they insist on keeping that 6 pack in the house? EXERCISE - I don't care if it's taking a 30 minute walk each day or Leslie walk away the pounds DVDs. Commit to something on a regular basis. -
My surgeon told me that the statistics are that the majority of lap-band patients will lose and keep off only 60% of their excess weight. That was hard to hear but I think very realistic. He said that a few people will edge up and a few people will edge down but the only real way to break out of that 60% is with exercise. I don't even have my band yet but if I were in your position, I might change my workouts and just hang in there. Regardless of what your metabolism is doing or not doing, remember the simplicity of calories vs calories out. Eventually, if you are taking in less than you are burning, you will lose weight.

I'm still not having restriction either and I've been banded since 12/28/12 and I'm hungry but I've learned so much and I'm extremely grateful. I've learned portion control and that every calorie counts and I'm OK with that. My doctor is conservative with his fills and I'm hoping that when I get my next fill which is next Monday, I'll start feeling satiety/restriction. In the meantime, I'll continue to eat properly. Down 58 lbs without restriction so I'm doing a happy dance anyway!

Hi. Restless is so right....and so smart. Right after surgery, you just need to make sure you get plenty of liquids and take good care of yourself. Focus on healing. When you get into real foods, you will have to have that 60 grams of protein each day (or whatever your doctor tells you - it is 60 for me). With a protein shake each morning (15 grams) and the protein I eat for my other 2 meals, I usually hit it or come very close. If I need more by the end of the day, I put a scoop of unflavored Whey Protein Powder from GNC into my yogurt. It has 21 grams of protein, doesn't change the flavor of the yogurt, and puts me well over my 60 grams. I was very worried about getting it in too, but it is much easier than it sounds. I use thedailyplate.com to keep track of my meals, calories, protein, etc. Good luck to you!!! Becky

What I eat varies, normally. In the morning I may eat a fried egg, because for some unknown reason, scrambled eggs don't work well for me. Many times I will get a Chick-fil-A chicken biscuit and eat 1/2 of it. I am a teacher and don't have much time for lunch, so I drink a Campbell's Soup at hand, and then a couple hours later I will eat a Protein added chewy bar. dinner is whatever we cook...spaghetti, pastalya, red Beans, grilled chicken, jambalaya, pork chops, pizza...I think you get the idea. Also, most days I drink my modified Starbucks drink. I have reduced the pumps of mocha and it has 220 calories and 17 grams of protein in my venti drink. I consume at least 60 g of protein a day and consume normallly 1200-1500 calories per day. Main point, I am not so restricted that there are a lot of foods that are off limits. I just eat a lot less of the foods than I used to.

an increased sense of restriction when you finish exercising? I am only using the treadmill for cardio and to burn calories, since I am only three weeks post-op. When I get done with my 40 or 45 minutes on the treadmil I feel as though water will make me sick, my stomach just feels so tight. Not an adversion to water, just that's usuall what I drink during/after aworkout. I have never been able to eat anything right after a workout since being banded. Anyone else get thatt way.:hungry:

Looking for my June 1 buddy's ?
busymom_of_3 replied to bvenegas's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's great! I'm down 29 since surgery. I'm on soft, not pureed now. So I've been able to chew meat and cooked veggies, but can only get in about 7 small bites before I'm full. Then I get hungry about 2.5 hour later, but I try to only eat every 3.5 to 4 hours. Getting in 1 shake and 3 "meals" a day. About 4 to 500 calories. Still kind of weak, especially after walking. Not sure how to increase without it hurting. Water is hard, but I get it in, barely. -

Transition begins tomorrow

Hello all! My lunch date went great. Very cool Parents, I kept my meal simple and had a quiche with Soup... Before I started my liquid diet I was around 275... This morning I was 268.8. Sugar cravings still hit. I ate 10 smarties (Canadian) worth 50 calories today . I am only human! At least it wasn't an entire box right? I'm still feeling pretty tired... Hoping this passes soon and energy starts increasing again. How's everyone else doing this week? -
I'm sure they'd be fine to eat....but wouldn't you want to use your calories on fresh foods that aren't processed? I quit eatting micro meals a while back because they simply have way too much sodium in them. In an emergency, sure...but everyday? I just think there are better things out there.

Unfortunatly my blister still bloody hurts!! Today all i have had is a coffee 1/2 cup soup and a few sips of another coffee, only cos i made it way to strong, and some pineapple juice from a can that the parents had with their tea. Maybe 400 cals at the most. Can you imagine how bad we would both be this time last week with only eating that!!!! I didnt walk today cos i needed to help mum make a casserole for the C.W.A chrissie breakup. I wasnt tempted to eat the chicken while deboning it or even try the curry sauce!! Massive change. Oh C.W.A is country womens association they do craft bake cakes and lamingtons and the best scones ever!!!!!! In the morning im leaving to go back home, yey freedom cos i live alone, and i will get a steamer calorie book and kitchen scales oh and better do a food shop now that we can have real food!!! How long are you on fluids for? Dad has relunctly given me some of his fish that he caught, i think it broke his heart! Are you having cravings or missing any foods and have you decided your plan of attack for chrissie? Im off to be now. Have a great night!

Pre-Op diet and exercise
ojibway replied to maredarlin's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am only a few days in to pre-op, everything is going fine, my walks I do are making more tired of normal. I'm sure it is because I don't even enough calories. But I try to keep going -
I'm just realizing how few calories my MD's diet consists of- between 400-500 calories a day! I've had to buy some calorie free drinks with potassium to help with the leg cramps. Using MFP daily now.

I am 7cc in a 14 cc band, i eat around 3 oz protein and a good portion of 2 green veg, i dont get hungry in between meals as the veg and protein last me around 4 hours. I lost around 14lbs a month with eating around 1000 calories a day and exercising every day, including cycling around 6 miles a day. Hi all> I was banded Feb. 19 by Dr. Earl Fox in Richland, WA. He and his staff are great! Only issues since banding have been that I am not pain-free as soon as I wanted to be (wanted to wake up next day without pain) and even consumming less than 600 calories a day, still no weight loss. Doctor and friends tell me to be patient but it is tough.
