  1. Went in for a fill two weeks ago to bring my 10cc band to 6.4cc. A week later I was having a hard time eating and heavily stuck episodes. I went back to the dr who did a barium and I had a slight dilation. They took out 2cc and said that we cannot go to 6.4 cc again. I am on liquids only for the next 3 days and then mushie and back to regular food after that. I am scared I won't recover and I won't feel restriction again. Right now I am starving. Has anyone had this ?
  2. So, with every bite of food or sip of water I get this pressure like pain when air is trying to to get out while I'm trying to get something in. What is this all about and will it stop?
  3. I am 3 weeks post op and just started puréed (refried beans, egg, etc) and having a bit of difficulty getting them down. I wasn't allowed that type of food at 1 week post op. your sleeve is still healing so you might wanna try and stick with protein shakes and liquids until the swelling goes down.
  4. _Dawn_

    Day one on pre-op diet.

I was instructed to go on a two week liquid pre-op diet. They do however, include a very stick pre-op solid foods diet that I can choose from if I absolutely can't stick the liquids only. So far I have only had a tomato. Not bad I'd say. Only 13 more days to go...
  5. I am also two weeks out. I experienced this once I moved to full liquids. I just moved to soft foods and it has gotten a little better. I have found that my protein drinks send me to the bathroom.
  6. Hi there! I had my surgery on August 15th and so far I have had a complication free, speedy and very lucky recovery. I have lost 47 pounds including a one week pre-op which I am pretty excited for! Well I have an interesting story (I'll make it short, I promise) that I want to share with you. [below talks about lots of junk food - don't read if you are sensitive to that kinda thing, heh] Before getting the gastric sleeve I was an emotional eater. I binged multiple times a week and the only person who knows is my mom and a good friend of mine. Food was my best friend. I used to eat huge quantities, well over 10,000 calories at a time and end my day with a big thing of ice-cream. I still get disgusted thinking about eating everything that I did. And I did this multiple times a week for years. Anyway~ Besides deep fried cheesy foods, sweets was my number one go-to food. You know those, "Oops, we baked too much!" 50% off carts they have at super markets? Yeah, I attacked that. Sometimes getting two dozen donuts, 24 count Cookies, etc that would sit in my stomach after a day and a half (not including all the chips, Pasta, cheese sticks, hot pockets, etc I would eat prior) I was a wreck. [end junk food] Anyway, now that I had the sleeve I have had no cravings other than fresh fruit. I am allowed SF/FF pudding (I got dark chocolate, my favorite) and I took one bite and it was far too rich! It went down smoothly and I had no problems but it was just disgusting. Pre-surgery the richer the better! But no, I just can't tolerate it now. I tried again a week later (the other day) and took one small spoon. Nope, not happening. I just don't want it and I gave it to my mother and said she can eat them. ISN'T IT CRAZY HOW MUCH YOU CAN CHANGE AFTER SURGERY? This super-super-sweet girl doesn't like sweets! I get great satisfaction by adding a strawberry to my crystal lite lemonade or eating two small blackberries but nothing more. I think this is a big fat NSV!!!!!!!! Does anyone have a story similar to mine?
  7. SueJH

    My first NSV!

I think a lot of us have some similarities. I didn't purge, but I was a huge fried food, fast food, sweets girl myself. After surgery (I'm 13 weeks out) food just doesn't have the same appeal. It's hard to explain how, but my hunger feels different too. I have all I can do to get my 2-3 oz of Protein in each meal, never mind the extra veggies or carbs I should be trying to add. Best of luck to you!

    Cold Feet

You had the same sort of thoughts you are having It's weird. They go away. You think you're going to miss eating, or certain foods... Definitely not the case with me. Funny. Today I was thinking about the last time I had a bagel. Two years? But what did I get from it Meanwhile, yesterday I went to my endocrinologist. For the last time! No more diabetes. No more high blood pressure. It's totally worth it and life changing!
  9. Holly5.3

    How long?

I still eat too fast! Tiny spoon, tiny bowl and I still eat way too fast so it reduces the volume I can ultimately consume-which is my tough luck! I try to cut my food small abd eat with a baby spoon/fork so that helps but some habbits are hard to break. I try to take 15 mins. for a meal, which is about 1/3-1/4 cup -4 oz.-6oz. Solid food, 1:2 cup soft (yogurt).
  10. Most doctors (at least here in Maryland) won't do a fill until at least 6 weeks post-op. You may feel all healed up, but might not be. Don't rush it. I got my first fill at 6 weeks, 3ccs, and by evening even water gave me indigestion. The next day I called and met the doctor at the hospital and he unfilled about 1.5 ccs. Two weeks later in his office I reported that soft foods were okay, but I was having trouble with denser stuff. So he took out another cc. On my last visit, I said I am able to eat way more than 1/2 cup of food and I get hungry before 4 hours, but he talked me out of the fill since I was still losing and he said I was ahead of schedule for the band, bypass, and sleeve. So I have at the most 1cc in my band (a 14cc fill volume), and I am working on my head hunger. I do eat more than 1/2 cup, but I love salads (I put chicken, ham or turkey on it for a protein source) and am still slowly losing. I plateaued for a month or so, and now it is creeping down. I was on liquids before surgery (lost 25 pounds) and I lost 10 during the 6 month diet. The rest has come off since surgery on 3/25/08.

    Fills

I had my fill on Friday. Like you, no pain as I was given a local first. I had 2 ccs put in. It was suggested I do full liquids for two days, but I did one day of full liquids, one day of mushies and now I'm back on normal food. I just can't exercise properly on full liquids! I need the energy of proper food! Lol!

    Stuck

It sounds like you ate the bread a few days ago? I am guessing the bread is no longer there, but I would call my surgeon and ask anyways. No question is a dumb question. For future reference, I was told not to eat anything from 2-4 hours prior to a fill because they don't want food to be left above the pouch or physically stuck in the pouch if they tighten the band down.

    Nausea at week 4

FYI, I am schedule for an EGD now cause I am still battling nausea. Had to stop my purée foods cause my reflux has gotten worse and I am so nausated. So back to fluids until Tuesday! Just not hungry any more.....feeling awful! I was doing so well....did not expect this. No fever or pain unless I eat food. Nausea no vomiting. Zofran is becoming my best friend. But sometimes it doesn't help.....makes me sad to be dealing with this at 4 weeks. Only good thing at the Dr today is I am down 30 lbs since surgery. Advice needed

Like previous poster said you start off light and build up. I've been banded 4 1/2. Years and haven't had fill in about 2 1/2 yrs. you at some point will get stuck but who knows what that will be. For me steak/beef eaten to quickly and too many large bites did it for me. Different foods work for different people. Ex: I cannot tolerate lettuce or toasted breads, while others are just fine with it

  17. Ahhh, you got me! Reading the fine print I see you bought coffee!! I am fighting the urge to have any food or caffeine funerals as I am having surgery on Tuesday. My doctor has no special pre-op diet; just nothing after midnight the night before surgery. It really helps that I live 35 minutes from the nearest store and I have so few carbs in the house. My town doesn't even have a doughnut shop! Reading members' stories is keeping me motivated. One can learn from success and from "failures."

    Lean for Life by Lindora

Hello. You are correct - signing up is all you have to do to get started. However, once you sign up your program is active. You can put it on hold 1 time during the entire 10 weeks and it cannot be on hold for more than 14 days. What I did was register and set everything up. Then I downloaded their book (chapter by chapter) and printed it out so I could read it before I actually started the program. Anyhew - I wasn't able to start when I had planned on it and am heading up north at the end of next week to visit family and attend a birthday party. SO, I have decided to not bother starting until I return on the 27th. In fact, it probably won't be until the following week so that I have some time to prepare. I'm also gonna try to get the hubby to join me, which may be interesting. Luckily, I'm not doing too bad food wise as it is. However, I do think that the Lindora program will really help me to kick my efforts up a notch. I've been exercising either 4 or 5 days a week at the gym (40 min. on the treadmill and some ab woke) and was excited because I thought I was getting healthier, etc... Then this past Saturday rolled around. OMG - the hubby & I got out our tennis stuff and headed to the courts. I thoght I was gonna die. It was so much more exhausting than I EVER remember it being. Then came Sunday....I was and still am sore in places thatI didn't even know I had muscles.!!! It's just insane. So, I think that once I get back from PA and get meals planned for at least one week - then I'll begin my 10 week trek (I'm thinking May 4th). In the meantime, if anyone has tried the program yet, please let me know as I'm anxious to hear people's experiences with it. Thanks again!

    I Need Some Help

Replying to first message, yes you are probably filled too full. Get a slight adjustment. Make sure you are on a good stool softener regimen. Your PCP can prescribe a liquid that works wonders on regulating you and won't mean trying to take pills. Avoid getting into using stimulants to have a BM. Believe me I got seriously backed up to put it nicely and it was not pleasant. It can cause some chest and stabbing back pain. I also want to make you aware of somethings that others may not be... Yes you want to feel full after but never want to get to where you are refluxing the food. It means you are eating too much, the wrong things, or your band is too full. I want to make sure you are aware that if you allow refluxing even without vomitting your esphogus can become stretched. At first it is like it is lazy and not propelling things down properly if you do this too long you could be lucky and just have to take a break from fills so it gets it's tone back. The real problem is when you let it get bad enough that it no longer propells and relies totally on gravity. Then eventually the band doesn't work because the esphogus will stretch and act as a part of your stomach pocket. The problems can get worse from there but your new and just need to be aware of some basic complications. Also don't eat my the hour or emotions, eat by your body. If you don't feel hungry and you are getting enough protein and necessary nutrients why take in the extra calories. You do need to make sure you are chewing properly and learning what foods you do not tolerate. I had to stop red meat and bread. I now don't have my band but I still don't enjoy red meat now or sandwichs. I guess pshycologically I just still have set in my mind they aren't worth the trouble! I can't wait to get rebanded. There is still a lot I have to learn about things after 3 years of having a band so take in information from who you can get it from and then find out what works for you. Best of Luck April mid-band 10/02 removal 09/05

OK, I'm A Moron- How do Fills Work?

you'll have to continue getting fills until you find your "sweet spot", which is when you feel completely full but not PB'ing after 1/2 cup of food and staying full for 4 hours. it usually takes multiple fills before you get to that point. you may even have to have a slight unfill at some point to find the exact spot. some say that even a .25cc unfill can make a huge difference. i've had several fills and a few unfills but it wasn't until my last fill on 12/31/08 that i actually FELT the restriction. my band was tight and i was afraid to eat for 2 days. after you get a fill you should do liquids and mushies until your stomach gets over the "trauma" of the fill. after the 2 days i feel normal and will go in next month for yet another fill.

    Eating out

    Yeow--I miss...

I feel the exact same way. Before my pre-op diet I was craming in all my favorite foods because I know I won't be eating them anymore. It was sad and not helpful at all. It really helps to know that I'm not the only one feeling this way. My problem is I really truely enjoy the taste of certain foods (mainly bad ones). I'm trying to experiment to find other things that will bring me joy to put in place of food (if that makes any since). We can do it!!!!!!

    How long...

Hi and congrats! I had my bypass on 03/11 and I am still figuring it out slowly. They cut the nerves when they do this to us so, it takes a long time to really feel anything again. Once you start eating actual food, just go slow and see how your pouch feels. Mine is weird because, five minutes after a bite goes down and I think I can do another, I'm all of a sudden SURE I cant do one more bite! It's a learning process for sure. Also, they say this will even change because the scar tissue will loosen over time and it won't be so tight like it is now forever so, we just gotta roll wit it! Good luck and keep up the good work!

    How long...

Band07, you have the right idea too. Just keep the small meals frequent, every one to two hours if your only doing a couple ounces right now. Remember, you have to make that new stomach work or it will never learn and eating will continue to be really hard. Take it slow, see how you feel after each bite but, really make that effort to eat because, you don't want to rely on shakes too much, your body and stomach want food. I really felt much better once I was off shakes and got all I needed from actual foods and my Vitamins ofcorse! Even just two months out, I can tell the difference in the way my pouch is handling food and the scar tissue isn't so terribly tight anymore. Good luck to you both!
